About this property
Feather Reef Cottage
Flying Fish Point is a beautiful quiet spot that demands you slow down. At Feather Reef Cottage, you will wake up each morning to the sounds of waves crashing on the rocks and the sight of the sun rising over the sea. Make a coffee, head outside and enjoy it on the cane outdoor lounge and if you're lucky, you will spot dolphins or turtles cruising past.
After breakfast, you might choose to walk down to the shop to grab the local paper or a magazine and settle in for the morning.
Alternatively, if you love fishing or even enjoy just throwing in a line, nothing beats this spot. Great fishing off the back deck where you can catch (and we have caught) sharks, grunters, flathead, catfish, mud crabs, golden trevally, mackeral & salmon! How often are you able to fish all day from the comfort of your own home? Here it's a reality.
If you're feeling a bit adventurous, why not hire a 4.2m tinny or a 6m half cab and fish the Johnson River or the Coral Sea!
If you've caught something, you can cook your fresh fish for lunch in the full kitchen or if it was the case of the one that got away, you could take a drive into town to buy some fresh fish or eat at one of the many pubs, cafes and restaurants. If you feel like an outing, within a short drive are magical waterfalls, hot springs, swimming holes, tea plantations, a chocolate factory, the magical, award winning Paronella Park and the beautiful Cairns hinterland. Just over an hour away is Cairns, with shopping centers, cinemas and the opportunity to go on day trips out to the Great Barrier Reef.
After a busy day doing lots or a little, spend the evening watching the moon rise over the water, glistening off the ocean before sinking into your ultra comfortable bed. All the beds have pillow top mattress protectors, 100% cotton sheets, goose/duck down donnas and cotton blankets and two pillows to choose from. All linen is supplied, including bed linen, towels, tea towels and basic amenities in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry.
There is a full kitchen (oven, fridge/freezer, microwave, pots and pans etc), but you are still only a lazy 10 min stroll to the local cafe for a quick bite (with a nice cold beer or bottle of wine to go with it) or a ten minute drive to Innisfail for cafes, pubs and take away options galore, if you would rather.
There is also a garage on the property to keep your car safe, and plenty of space to park your caravan. The house will suit any traveling style.
Years ago we had problems of little or no TV reception and poor mobile reception. Both of these things are no longer a problem, and Telstra has recently (2019) installed a new mobile tower in the area. However if you want to spend your holiday watching TV or checking your Facebook profile, this may not be the place you're looking for. If you want to watch the moon rise over the waves or dolphins cruise past your back door, then you've found the right place!!
Please note this is strictly a no smoking property. If cigarette butts are found around the house, an additional cleaning fee of $100 will be incurred.
We look forward to welcoming you to this special piece of paradise.

About the host
Hosted by Warren Ritchie

I grew up in Swan Hill, a small regional town in Victoria, Australia. I have two younger kids, and live and work in the Geelong region. My family have lived up in FNQ for over 20 years now, and so this area is like my second home.
Why they chose this property
I found this property just before cyclone Larry hit us. Luckily I got insurance organised in time, and it was still there when it passed through (many places weren't).
I love this place, I go up every year around October time with a group of mates and we spend the week fishing from the front deck. The photo is one of the bigger ones I caught there in 2018 (golden trevally).

What makes this property unique
Fishing from the front deck, and the peace and quiet. I love that it's not a popular spot, and hope it stays that way.
The house is simple but perfect in my mind for the type of stay it is - simple and relaxing.
