This house was designed by Dr Mark Dewsbury, Centre for Sustainable Architecture, University of Tasmania. Mark has designed a house that, on the edge of a World Heritage National Park, aims to capture Tasmania's alpine heartland.
The house is a highly efficient solar passive design, capturing the warmth from the sun and releasing it at night. There is also an air-based heat pump that heats the concrete slab of the house. Insulation is extensive with double glazing throughout.
The 100 acres that the house is on was clear-felled 30 years before purchase and now, 50 years on, the forest is thriving. The house footprint is just 86 square metres yet while compact the design feels spacious.
Cradle Cave features
The house design was inspired by the curved seed pods of native hakea plants. High expansive windows provide extensive views of alpine vegetation creating a sense of being part of the incredible Tasmania mountain high country. While sitting in the warmth of the house you can look out at snow-covered trees, feeling cocooned and protected from the elements.
Various native animals can be spotted day and night with an extensive array of birds, the occasional wombat, possums, paddy melons and wallabies. This is an ideal location for a romantic weekend, family gathering or simply time-out from a busy lifestyle.
'When the sun is shining it's glorious, but even when it's grey, and you're sitting in the warmth with a good glass of red, and looking out at the floor to ceiling nature, it's pretty idyllic', We have excellent mobile coverage in the house for Telstra only.

Great house- comfortable and clean. Good communication. We had a little difficulty locating the property- best direction would be to note that it is opposite the well signed Cradle Mountain Fishing and camping.
Beautifully appointed, all mod cons, plenty of space (deceptive, like a Tardis).Fauna feasted quietly and the birds were fantastic. from Wrens to Kookaburras'We will be back!!
We spent 5 nights at Cradle Cave. The house is cosy and warm with everything we needed for a very comfortable stay. It was only 15 min drive to Cradle Mountain/st Claire National Park where we spent our days exploring. We woke up on our last morning to a magical white winter wonderland. We highly recommend the Cradle Cave.
Lovely house hidden among the trees a short drive from cradle mountain. Quality appliances, well maintained and enough space for a small family to relax. Thanks!
Great location for exploring Cradle Mountain, approx 15kms from the visitors centre. Unique secluded house which has everything you need to make it a home away from home.
Great location. Perfect accommodation for our family
This place is in a great spot, so close to Cradle. It's in a quiet spot surrounded by bush with lots of birds and the odd wallaby or Wombat come to graze just in front of the house.
The house itself is really good, warm, clean and well appointed. Really enjoyed our stay. :-)
Perfect private and cosy home to base yourself close to cradle mountain. Lovely hiking trail on property and lots of wildlife and beautiful views. Highly recommend!
The cave was a wonderful place to stay. Unlike caves it did have ample sunshine and warmth. The property was meticulous and beautiful. Great location close to Cradle Mountain. We highly recommend this location for a quiet escape.
This is an absolutely stunning property in an isolated location but still only 20 mins from cradle mountain. Cleanliness was a1 and the property had everything you will need for a comfortable stay apart from food. Views of the night sky were incredible. The best property we have stayed at.

Great private escape
A great place. Everything was very clean and comfortable. The kids loved the bean bags. You can sit in the warmth of this architecturally designed home and watch the possums wallabies walking buy.
