Take a step back in time, to bygone era, where life was simpler. Where people spent time with dignified entertainment and seemed to have more space and time. Welcome back to the great age of Steam.......

The carriage was used as a workshop, when the original owner was building the house next door. Parts of the train were stripped and used in the house construction.

When we started renovating the carriage it was a complete mess. There was not enough intact to restore it authentically, so we have developed our own style that is vaguely steam-punk influenced. We approached several builders, but none were prepared to take it on, certainly not for a fixed fee. Eventually we found George, a full time artist and part time builder, who shared our passion for the renovation (as long as it was on an hourly rate).

Almost every surface had to have something done to it. We thought we would strip out and move around a few panels and dividers, but we found that carriages were really tightly put together (all that rattling) and hard to pull apart. When we did get panels off, we had no idea what we would find. We completely stripped and rewired the electrical, and did plumbing from scratch. Renovating anything nearly a century old will have its challenges, but this was exceptional.

It is not 5 star luxury, and certainly not for everyone, but it is one of a kind. Steam's popularity with guests has amazed us.

Forrest is a gorgeous small town of weatherboard shacks, surrounded by towering Mountain Ash rain forest with lush ferny under-story. The dawn birdsong is extraordinary. There is a lot to do around Forrest even if you are not a mountain biker.

FEATURES :
- 3 bedrooms. Can sleep 6 guests but 2 or 4 would be more comfortable. See Sleeping Options below.
- Linen, towels, hand towels and tea towels are provided. The beds will be made up when you arrive.
- Bathroom with shower
- Open plan kitchen/living room
- Wood fire box heater with wood supply included
- Nobo heaters
- Full small kitchen with stove, oven, sink, fridge
- No washing machine and dryer
- WiFi
-Bluetooth sound system
- Italian style stove-top coffee maker
- Basic provisions like olive oil, spices, tea, coffee, Vegemite and Glad Wrap
- With great regret we no longer offer the four free bikes. The expectation of having bikes in good working order was a service we could not reliably offer without living nearby and maintaining them between guests. Bring your own mountain bikes or you can hire bikes at Forrest Hire Bikes, two minutes walk away.
- Pets and children welcome. The yard is fenced but not necessarily dog proof.

NO TV. There is a sound system, books and board games.

Enter via Sanderson Lane. You cant miss it, it is the only train carriage at the elbow in the lane.

SLEEPING OPTIONS
The train can sleep six people, but four would be more comfortable.

The small bed rooms used to be train seating compartments, only 2.1m square, so they are only just longer than a bed. The rooms are close together, the bath room is between the kids and second bedroom and there is not a lot of audio insulation. You can hear what is happening in the next compartment.

It is ideal for:
• A couple (with the whole train for themselves it is pretty spacious).
• A couple and two kids.

It should work well for:
• A couple, and up to four kids. Two kids would need to sleep in one queen bed. It would be a great place for kids to bring a friend.
• Two couples, as long as they were good friends. It would be close living.

It may work for:
• Four adults, one in each bed. The single beds are train beds, like caravan beds (750mm wide).
• Any more adults would be possible, but only if you are planning to be out most of the day and out for dinner. If it a just place to sleep, it could work.

BEDROOMS
Master: Two compartments long, with a queen bed.
Second: Single compartment with two thin single beds.
Third: Single compartment with a queen bed.

PRICING
Steam is priced to make the property attractive to both smaller families and also groups of up to 6. Big groups take much longer to clean-up after and use more electricity, water and firewood, so we have set up a sliding price scale. There is a flat rate for up to 4 guests. Each guest above this is an additional $50 per night – this way small groups aren’t excluded and it covers the additional cleaning and utility costs for larger groups. A flat rate works well for some properties but are trialling this system to make it less expensive for smaller groups.
CARRIAGE HISTORY
The carriage is no stranger to conversion. It has had an amazing history, with 7 lives and 5 conversions. It was built as a First Class carriage in 1926 and converted between First and Second Class 4 times, then retired in 1983. More detailed history, some photos and original plans of the carriage are available on booking.

THE GREAT AGE OF STEAM
Steam, certainly wont be for everyone, but we have had great feedback from the young and the young at heart. There seems to be a great fondness for the "Great Age of Steam", when locomotives were so important, linking towns across the country. At the turn of the century trains were the greatest technological achievement of humans, they opened new horizons, and were a symbol of power and progress. We hope we have tapped in to this, and we're excited to be able to offer this unique accommodation to guests.

Great place to stay.

We enjoyed our stay here, it was surprisingly spacious given it's a train carriage. Very comfortable & clean. It was quite cold during our stay so the wood heater had lots of use. It has pretty much everything you would need, and it's something a bit different from most accommodation.

Well appointed but not as private as you might think

Steam is beautifully presented, clearly much thought has gone into the fittings and fixtures and overall this property is lovely. The carriage sits on a fairly small property however so it didn't feel as private as I had expected. Also might be worth noting that although there is sleeping arrangements for 6 the living area would be very crowded with this number, Steam is definitely better suited to a couple.

Experience the charm of another era...

Once you board this beautiful train, you will feel transported into an era graced by Ladies and Gentlemen. Not only were my husband and I charmed, our two boys ran around for hours exploring every object of curiosity. Outside, they enjoyed splitting logs for the wood burner and swinging on the hammock, we really enjoyed these thoughtful touches. We found it surprisingly spacious inside, and Donna the caretaker is meticulous with her cleaning, from the cutlery to the top of the refrigerator, this place was spotless. The limitations of our boot mounted bike rack meant that we could only transport my husband and our boys bikes, but another thoughtful touch was that Fleur provided two complementary bikes, which meant we could go for a family ride together. It was a real joy, I had not intended to ride, but I'm so glad I did. There are so many scenic tracks here, all within riding distance from Steam Carriage. I felt at ease for my boys safety as they were all very well maintained tracks, and very few cars around. This was a perfect place to enjoy time together away from technology, I would recommend Steam Carriage without hesitation.

What a gem!

What a privilege it was to stay in such a unique space! The train was so artfully done and is full of quirky and whimsical touches. It was an experience just taking in all the details. It was spacious and cozy all at the same time and had absolutely everything we needed. Wines under the verandah are a must. Will definitely be back to this beautiful place!

A unique and fun getaway with all the mod-cons

A unique and fun getaway with all the mod-cons, set in an adventure destination. A fantastic launchpad for exploring Forrest and its surrounds. Or curl up in the hammock with a book and reclaim your centre.

Full of character

It’s a bit steampunk, it’s a bit Hogwarts Express, it’s all fun. In a little lane in sleepy Forrest is a complete old timber country train carriage converted into a snug accommodation. Being a carriage, everything is small, the one real drawback being no storage space. Being only 3 of us though, we used the third bedroom as a walk-in robe. It’s great for a family of 3 or 4 but you would have to be very close friends to have 4 or 6 adults! Other than that, it’s a wonderful spot. A high quality little kitchen, great shower, comfy beds, a leafy garden with BBQ and eclectic fittings make for a unique escape. Plus the new chocolaterie Platypi just up the road which you shouldn’t miss. A highly recommended stay.

Perfectly quiet, clean and quaint carriage in the heart of Forrest

Clean and well appointed accommodation tucked away off the main road. Well presented and close to facilities in the beautiful Otway Ranges. Excellent place to start your walk or food forage at the local cafes, micro brewery or chocolate shop. The dogs loved the smells of the yard and the close encounter with the local wandering pet sheep. Booking was simple and efficient and post leaving was a prompt.

Beautiful steam carriage 10/10

I overall loved my stay at the steam carriage. Fleur was so easy to work with and provided great customer service. It was really clean when I got there and super cozy. The description of the place was exactly as explained on the website. My children loved the Forrest General Store , because they could walk down the lane across and sleepy road and buy cheap old fashioned lollies. Overall 10/10 would recommend

Compact luxury

A wonderful place to snuggle up and unwind. The train carriage has a fireplace to keep you toasty warm and a shower that you never want to get out of. Since there is no tv its the perfect spot to disconnect, put some tunes on the amazing speaker and sip wine in front of the fire. The beds are comfy and the kitchen well decked out. A micro brewery and a chocolate cafe are within walking distance and there is a couple of friendly chatty goats down the lane. The owner called us the day we were due and gave us some valuable last minute tips and checked on our arrival time, offering to have the fire lit. We thoroughly loved staying here and couldn’t recommend it more highly.

A wonderful place to relax and getaway.

We loved the Steam Carriage! The accommodation was just the perfect size for the two of us to enjoy a relaxing week away. The fire place in particular was enjoyed over the cold week. We would highly reccomend this to anyone!

Our favorite place to stay on our Australia trip!

We loved the luxurious yet cozy feel of the carriage, and everything we needed was provided. The fireplace – and nice stock of firewood – was fantastic with the chilly weather, and the comfy furniture was perfect. The renovation is extremely well done, and the property is clean and well cared for. The location close to the brewery and Bespoke Harvest, as well as multiple trails and scenic drives, was ideal.

Big Boys and Little Boys Dreams Come True!

Wow! Steam was breathtaking. My husband and our 2.9yr old son were over joyed when we pulled up at Steam. We had the best time staying in the cosy surrounds of Steam. Its rustic, romantic and full of charm! We loved being able to bring our dog with us and she loved exploring the yard! Steam is the perfect location, we did lots of nice walks and loved how close it was to the Brewery and Cafe! Perfect for everyone. Steam had everything we needed and more. We cant wait to come back one day!

Cosy train carriage in a beautiful town

We arrived in the dark and were still impressed with the train carriage awaiting us! It's an unusual place to stay, but is clean, warm and welcoming. We were fortunate that it was cold enough to want to use the fireplace and were happy with the warmth it provided the carriage. Fully appointed kitchen meant that we were able to cook meals as wanted (although with the brewery just a stroll away there is little reason to do so!). Our children were very comfortable sleeping in their single beds compartment whilst we took the main bedroom at the rear of the carriage. Forrest has a great historic walk through the town which is well signed and provides some insight into the history of the town. Well worth doing. We also enjoyed a couple of the local walks - one to the edge of Lake Elizabeth and another to see Stevensons Falls. Both achievable with two young children. Forrest brewery was a favourite for evening meals during our stay.

a gorgeous serene getaway, perfectly restored

Me and my 2 boys (6&8) thought the train carriage was so cool! Description was spot on, there was so much to explore in Forrest, and the carriage was walking distance to a lovely general store, yummy choc factory, tasty brewery and local pub. Recommend the 5km walk around Lake Elisabeth (look out for over 10 different species of cool coloured fungi in Autumn), only 7km away, and a drive to Stevensons falls only 20min drive away, easy to get to falls from car park, and great rock climbing in the river. The carriage was well restored, very comfy and cosy. We loved making a fire and playing board games outside on the table. Also loved watching the sunrise from the big bed with nice thick warm sheets. All the amenities were good, the brewed coffee was great! Even the hand soap and shower gel was lovely. And having no TV screen was perfect! We thought it was the best mini break, and already planning our next adventure! Thank you Fleur, the perfect host.

Unique accommodation!

What a wonderful experience this converted steam train is! A perfect place for a relaxing long weekend. We really enjoyed the fire and the large outdoor area. There is a good Bluetooth speaker which we appreciated. Communication prior to our stay was easy and very clear. We hope to be back!

A nostalgic, comfortable, and unique place to stay

We had a wonderful stay in Steam Carriage. It was very comfortable and a delight to be in the surrounds of the old steam train. The children loved it. Forrest is a fantastic base for exploring the Ottway region by mountain bike, car, or using your own legs for the beautiful scenic walks. The Tree Adventure park was a great adventure. Fleur was a warm and responsive host. Can't recommend this experience enough!

Remember that famous line from Alice in Wonderland as she heads down the rabbit hole into a strange new world of untold imagination.

“Curiouser and curiouser!”

Well that’s the way we hope you feel about our 10 unique wonderlands. Duffelbird’s flock of getaways are for those with a heart for adventure – places where you can unwind or unravel, let your existential selves hang free to ponder life and love, under the stars, away from the noise – immersed in nature.

Our hidden gems are rich in character and layered in mystery, no more than 2.5 hours out of Melbourne – a converted steam train in the Otways, a mid-century charmer on the fringe of an orchid forest, a glass fronted masterpiece overlooking the wild waters of Westernport – each of them tucked away in some of the most unspoilt corners of Victoria, waiting for you to explore with wide eyes and wonder.

Bring your well-mannered dogs. Let them roam free, (just not on the furniture) while you settle in to our sometimes quirky, often eclectic, always whimsical, hideaways.

Can you hear the water? The breaking waves? The cascading waterfall?
Can you feel the peace, the calm, the astounding beauty of Mother Nature wrapping you in a gentle embrace?

We’ve felt it too. At the ritual Burning Man in the Nevada desert, deep in the jungles of Costa Rica and atop the volcanic peaks of Hawaii.

And we want to give all the quirky travellers out there a chance to awaken that ‘wanderlust’ energy. Because we all need time out so we don’t go bonkers in the real world. Go on, escape the chaos, experience the enrichment of nature, the magic of complete abandonment, the inspiration of new surrounds. Let Dufflebird be your tour guide to a wildly curious life.
Rabbit hole to Wonderland, right this way.
