Hidden at the end of a cobblestone laneway, this light-filled contemporary studio is housed in historic stables (circa 1863). Pleasantly secluded yet only a stone’s throw from Melbourne’s premier attractions, it’s been cleverly designed for you to do as much, or as little, as you like.

Stylishly furnished with meticulous attention to detail, the versatile open-plan space is both dynamic and restful, equally suited to a romantic escape or a productive business stay. Sink into a long soak in the deep claw-foot bath, retreat to the queen-size mezzanine bed with a good book, sip cocktails on the daybed in the sheltered courtyard, or serve dinner to someone special in the fully equipped kitchen and dining area.
Soaring ceilings and original brickwork reflect the studio’s storied past, while the interior is thoroughly modern: a luxurious bathroom, hydronic underfloor heating, a premium bed, and unique custom light fittings. A cantilevered flatscreen TV can be enjoyed from the bed, the couch, or dining table. Sophisticated curtains allow you to tailor the interior to your mood.
The studio feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but step outside and you’re within a World Heritage area, minutes’ walk from the inner city’s liveliest restaurants, bars and shopping strips in Carlton and Fitzroy (Lygon Street, Gertrude Street and Brunswick Street). Slip through the back of the laneway and take a stroll through the historic Carlton Gardens to the Melbourne Museum, then continue over to Queen Victoria Market and the buzzing city centre. The studio is central to everything — close to transport (bus, tram and train), but most importantly away from street and traffic noise. Whether you’re here to explore or to work remotely with a spacious work area, ergonomic furniture, and quiet surroundings, you’ll always come home to a peaceful retreat.
About your host: I work in art and design and I’m never far away if anything needs attending to. I’m busy throughout the day but always happy to stop for a chat on my way upstairs. I know where to find a good martini and a great coffee, and can recommend restaurants, galleries, bars & bakeries — D. Chirico around the corner does great challah on Fridays along with the practical essentials you may need during your stay: grocers, dry cleaners or tailors.
