About this property

Restored Historic Cottage in County Kilkenny

Private and comfortable two-bedroom, 2.5-bath stone cottage located in beautiful County Kilkenny, Ireland. Old-world charm, yet fully equipped for comfortable living, and surrounded by flower gardens and lush open space. We love the peace and quiet of our countryside retreat.

The cottage is in a private and secluded courtyard setting, but with close access to plenty of local facilities in nearby towns of Knocktopher, Thomastown, Kilkenny, and Waterford. The nearby M9 motorway provides easy access to Kilkenny, Waterford, and Dublin.

The property has been lovingly restored to the highest standards with hand-crafted woodwork and natural stone throughout. It is clean, spacious, and comfortable. The property includes two units: a two-story main house and a two-story guest cottage. These can be rented individually or together (#1021234).

This listing is for the main cottage (Gorman's Cottage). It contains two double bedrooms, a large kitchen, a sitting room, a formal dining room, and 2.5 bathrooms. A laundry room with a washing machine and dryer is in an adjacent building. The farm buildings surround a courtyard, which features a landscaped patio with a flower garden.

The focal point of the well-equipped kitchen is the original eighteenth-century stepped chimney. The kitchen also has a traditional Stanley stove, which can be used for a wood or peat fire to keep the kitchen cozy even in the middle of winter. The kitchen opens out through French doors onto a stone patio which overlooks a private garden and rolling hills in the distance. One bedroom, containing a double bed, is above the kitchen. The main house also has a sitting room with T.V. and a formal dining room featuring a slate floor and a large table that seats eight. The master bedroom is above the dining room. It has a king-sized bed, a wood floor, and an adjoining half bathroom. All duvets, bedclothes, and towels are included, as are light and heat. The house has underfloor heating in addition to radiators. There is a pull-down bed in the dining room with a double inflatable mattress to accommodate additional guests.

Gorman’s cottage is one mile outside the small village of Hugginstown, which has two pubs, a small grocery, and one of the best Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) clubs in the county. The nearby town of Thomastown is known for its arts and crafts, and has several studios and workshops, galleries and exhibitions to visit, cafés and numerous pubs where one can unwind with a pint and some live music. From there, it is a short drive to the world-renowned Mount Juliet estate, which provides excellent facilities, including horse-riding and fly-fishing, the Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, spa facilities, and first-class restaurants.

The City of Kilkenny is an exciting destination with a well-preserved medieval core focused on the stunning Kilkenny Castle and Gardens. It has an active arts scene with a range of galleries, studios, museums, and historic attractions. It is a great place to eat, drink, shop, and explore. Kilkenny hosts several festivals over the summer months, including the Kilkenny Arts Festival in August and the Cat’s Laugh comedy festival in June. The Viking city of Waterford, a short 30-minute drive away by motorway, is also a lively spot with plenty to do and see.

Our second stay at this property and it was great again. The location is beautiful and quiet. A short 10-15 minute walk to the local village (shop, pubs, church, sports field) and a short drive to the motorway and a grocery store and gas station. The cottage is very well kept and well equipped with appliances, wifi, etc. We'll definitely be back again.

Wonderful Country Cottage

Gorman's Cottage was the last property on our tour and it was by far the best! The old stone cottage is very roomy and everything you'd want in a country retreat. The surrounding rural farmland is absolutely beautiful. Donal, the property manager, was very helpful to us when we needed something. A couple of minor drawbacks for us was, there was an iron bit we could not find an ironing board, and neither could Donal. No big deal, really. Another drawback was the narrow roads leading to and from the cottage. For us Americans, it was a white-knuckle experience! But if you live over here, you'll have no problem. All-in-all, we highly recommend Gorman's Cottage for a quiet, relaxing holiday!

We both grew up in Ireland; Sinéad in Dublin and Mick in Kilkenny. We have lived in California for over 30 years, but maintain close ties to Ireland. Now that we are retired, we split our time between Ireland and California.

Why they chose this property

We bought this cottage to be close to family members. We love the relaxed lifestyle in south County Kilkenny.

What makes this property unique

Gorman's Cottage is a unique historic farmhouse restored with skill and attention to detail. It retains many of its original features including thick stone walls, original windows, an original 18th century fireplace and slate roof. While it exudes old-world charm it has been restored to be a comfortable modern cottage.
