About this property
Blue Duck Valley Woolshed
The Blue Duck Farm Woolshed is located in the Seaward Valley at Mangamaunu just 30 minutes North and then West from the village of Kaikoura. Below and adjacent to the Woolshed is the Blue Duck Scientific Reserve, the largest remaining area of accessible lowland podocarp forest between the Marlborough Sounds and Otago. The reserve is home to majestic stands of native Totra, Rimu, Miro, Matai, Kahikatea. These ancient trees are BIG and the drive in to the Woolshed is absolutely spectacular! The Blue Duck Woolshed offers a uniques New Zealand High Country experience. The Woolshed maintains it's original external appearance and inside it's configuration as a shed. While preserving these basic features it has also been transformed into warm comfortable accommodation that sleeps up to 8 with two bedrooms, a central lounge and dining area and modern bathroom. The theme is 'basic country', much of the furniture is colonial in period with some pieces of specific historic interest. The Blue Duck Trading Company maintains a large wall-mounted display cabinet, itself a museum piece from a drapers shop in the Whanganui district, displays samples of groceries and general goods with which it has supplied the rural community over the past century and more. The Woolshed has commanding views of the Seaward Vally Station and Central Saddle abutted by Mt Alexander on one side and Jacob's Ladder on the other and a glimpse of the distant ocean inbetween. With accommodation for up to 8 people and it's close proximity to the Coast and the Kaikoura township it offers a great escape for an adventure winter or summer and a very special New Zealand historic experience that tells a story of early NZ rural life. Please be aware that this property does not have a linen service available.

This was one of the best accommodation experiences of my life, and easily the best in New Zealand. Exceptional location - the closest thing I can think of to being in a tramping hut in Fiordland, only without the extra people and with a stove, fridge, and relatively comfortable beds. Just outstanding.
We loved the seclusion of the property and the abundant bird life. The accommodation was a great trip back in time especially the cabinet full of old artifacts. Also loved the view. Highly recommend.
The woolshed is in a beautiful quiet location 9.2 km up the Blue Duck Valley Road, surrounded by towering hills and native bush. The furniture is lovely. Plenty to look at, including quirky collections of woolshed memorabilia, bottles and matchboxes. Very helpful host.
Even the way to the place, the views, remoteness was great. 2 days without technology, we could unwind and rest. There was a lot to see inside the house and outside as well. Thank you, we had everything we needed.
We had a wonderful time at the blue duck farm. We enjoyed being away for a relaxing weekend. The fireplace kept us warm and cozy. I really recommend it if you want to disconnect and enjoy nature.
We stayed here with friends for my 40th birthday. We had a fantastic time.. The hikes were spectacular as was the birding. We would definitely stay here again! Do note that there is no cell phone reception for several kms.
Great location in the hills, surrounded by bush, birds and wild deer. The old woolshed has been converted well for a getaway destination. It's a bit rustic but that adds to the charm.
A different place to stay, good for getting away from everything, quiet location, 9.5k up a narrow gravel road, no wifi and no phone coverage, noisy water pump
