About the host
Hosted by Sunny Collings
This area is where Sunny spent many childhood holidays as her paternal and maternal families from the UK and China settled in the wider region in the late 1800s, and family members stayed on and live here still. Having worked in NZ and overseas she has returned as so many do, and created this hillside haven with her partner Selena (Te Atiawa, Aitanga a Mahaki). Selena is a more recent convert, having grown up in Lower Hutt and worked as a designer in Pōneke / Wellington.

Why they chose this property
Why here at Koau-taia / Poison Creek? Because we love what we hope you will love too: our regenerating kānuka bush, the stunning views, our magnificent southern night sky, being above the inversion layer in winter, our returning birdlife, pausing to breathe, activate the senses and move slowly.
What makes this property unique
Nestled in the trees in its own supremely private area on the property, the cottage sleeps two comfortably on a high quality hotel quality mattress. With separate compact kitchen/dining, and ensuite with separate toilet, you have all you need to relinquish the outside world. You will find a modern elegant style throughout with luxury touches such as portable bluetooth speaker, underfloor heating in the bathroom, separate toilet and kitchen/dining, and light dimmers. The cottage is well insulated and thermally broken double glazed, so is warm in winter and an even temperature in summer. Note the TV is set up for streaming from your own device via the free wifi.
The bedroom view is of the sheltered courtyard garden, and the kitchen/dining view is towards St Bathans range. The night time view is of our magnificent southern sky. Ensure you pause and look up. Without light pollution you can easily see falling stars, the planets, and the Southern Cross. The daytime light has a special sharpness when the sun is shining, and a soft muffle when it's cloudy. In winter you can watch the invasion layer flow slowly south, hovering above our mighty river Mata-au. Just magic.
Your neighbours are the birdlife returning as our revegetation advances, and the occasional rabbit. Wander up the gully among the newly planted infant beech trees to the newly refurbished donkey shed, complete with seating for your relaxation over a fabulous Central Otago wine. Contemplate the elevated view of the valley floor and your relaxed start to tomorrow. Maybe this holds the easy drive to Tarras, the historic Bendigo gold area, Cardrona, or a longer outing to Makarora, the gateway to the breathtaking West Coast and its glaciers, via Haast Pass. Maybe just an ice cream at the Luggage Pub, built by the adoptive father of Sunny's great grandmother. The central location makes it all easy.
