PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE INTENDING TO USE THE ELEVATOR FOR A MOBILITY IMPAIRED MEMBER OF YOUR PARTY: We booked this beach house for a three-day trip and paid approximately 5,000 for our stay. A member of our party is wheelchair-bound and relied entirely on the elevator to move between floors. During our stay, the elevator stopped working while she was on the second floor, leaving her completely trapped there for the entire afternoon and evening. She could not get downstairs. She could not go to the beach. Our group lost 1/3 of our beach days because of this—her birthday to be in fact. Truly wild. An equipment failure can happen. What turned this from an unfortunate situation into an unacceptable one was management’s response. After we explained exactly what had happened and how significantly it affected our trip, management offered us 220 in reimbursement on a roughly 5,000 stay. That response was honestly staggering. 220 does not come remotely close to acknowledging what it means for a wheelchair user to be physically confined to one floor of a vacation rental for hours. This was not a minor inconvenience or a broken amenity. The elevator was the difference between one member of our party having access to the property and effectively being trapped inside it.The response from management demonstrated a profound lack of understanding of—or concern for—the realities of traveling with a disability.
