As is usual with rural areas, there are biting bugs (mosquitoes, blackflies etc.) at times but keeping the front door closed at all times will help keep them outside. All the windows and the door have bug screens.

At times, there could be sounds of wild animals, dogs, birds, chainsaws, generators and tractors as is usual with a rural lifestyle.

Also there is a train that goes by twice a day and sometimes small planes fly over when there is an event at the small airport in our town.

You will hear birds, squirrels, chipmunks, our chickens & our rooster, wild turkeys, wolves, coyotes, owls, bear, moose, ravens, bobcats, farm animals & dogs.

While driving in our area, keep an eye out for moose, deer, bears, foxes, rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, grouse and wild turkeys that may suddenly jump out in the middle of the road or garter snakes sunning themselves on the road.

About the host

Hosted by Donna

Host profile image
I immigrated from the Caribbean in the 80s and have always lived in the city until 2016, when we moved to this property and built our Homestead. Moving here has been a life defining transition, we have come to enjoy the peace of nature and it has taught us about quality of life, a deeper appreciation for nature and the grand design in the universe.

We hope to have others experience the magic of nature so that they can finally listen to that yearning inside that has no name and gets silenced in the routine of everyday life.

It is very rewarding to see big smiles and dreamy looks on Guests' faces when they checkout after staying at Ravens Nest.

Why they chose this property

I have always been drawn to Forests and I had dream of being able to live in a place surrounded by trees. Eric camped a lot in Algonquin Park.

We used to go hiking on Mount Nemo's trails and I would think it would be so nice to have a cabin here under trees where it is so peaceful and quiet.

This area has so much natural beauty with all the forests and lakes to be explored. As well, there are a lot of outdoor activities to be enjoyed.

What makes this property unique

A lot of thought went into where to place the windows to give the experience of feeling immersed in the outdoors while being inside.

We tried to be deliberate in the placement of everything to enhance the experience in nature.

Although we also live here, all our Homesteading is done in front portion of the property. This ensures Guests' privacy and the security of knowing we are close by to deal with any issues that may come up but while having their own space to enjoy.

We try to live in harmony with nature as much as possible. You will see piles of dead trees and branches around the property. This is done on purpose to create habitat for wildlife. We have noticed Rabbits, Squirrels and certain birds make their homes in these piles.

Our cabin is named for the Ravens that play in the skies above the property and come to visit regularly for eggs and to forage on wild blueberries when they are in season.
