About this property

Agapantha Cottage - Country in the City, original artwork, wkly/mthly discounts

Agapantha Cottage is set in a shared garden that also has vegetables, fruit trees (orange, lemon, lime, apricot, cherry, fig, kiwi, plum, olive and apple) and ponds. There are (over 2000) agapantha flower heads that line the driveway and garden beds in summer.

Vintage furniture has been revamped with original art works on the walls. The Cottage is self contained with a full working kitchen including microwave, oven, sandwich maker, toaster, wok, full fridge/ freezer, coffee pod machine. There is a washing machine, clothes rack and split aircon unit as well. Great for family, writers and artists. Wifi and power included.
A comfortable queen bed and a single rollaway bed (on request and set up as needed in the living area) are available.
Strictly no parking inside the driveway gate as the drive is too narrow. Unload in front of gate if necessary, then park in bays or on the street, which only has local traffic.
A local shopping centre is nearby with 2 restaurants, fish/chip shop, massage and Pilates shops, chemist, butcher, grocer, newsagent and petrol station.

Canberra has many museums, galleries, parks (with gas bbqs), bushwalking trails, bike paths, lake activities (kayaking, sailing, boat touring, swimming, boat peddling), amazing childrens playgrounds including road safety for bikes, the arboretum with banksia pods (see my photo). There are great restaurants nearby at the Belconnen Lakeside. Markets are also a feature notably Kingston Markets on every Sunday, Hall Market on 1st Sunday of the month and close to the Cottage, the Jamieson Market also on Sundays.

Canberra is also known as the garden city or bush capital. The famous Floriade festival of bulbs and gardens at the Lake Burley Griffen and the private Tulip Top Gardens, held in Spring, is highly recommended.

Cosy & Comfortable Agapantha Cottage

My husband and I had a three night stay in Agapantha Cottage in March 2025. It was a convenient base for our first time exploring Canberra.Agapantha Cottage was a cosy, comfortable, home away from home and Jenny was a helpful and thoughtful host.

A lovely cottage and a great location

We had a very lovely stay at Agapantha Cottage. The location was perfect for our sporting events. Jenny was a very attentive host and communicated really well with us prior to the date of our stay. The garden was perfect for relaxing after a busy day and kitchen was suitable for our needs. Thank you for the agapantha seeds. We have already planted them i our garden!

Agapantha

Property was cosy, bed was comfy and the surrounding gardens were lovely. Jenny was very nice and left us be. Was difficult to dry washing due to the season and the lack of sunlight available so needed to plan washing days. All round a nice place to stay and loved the quiet area and beautiful bird life in the area.

Lovely cottage in beautiful bushy neighborhood

My husband, daughter and dog stayed here for a couple of months. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The cottage was equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Jenny was a very responsive host, very easy to get along with and quick to respond if we needed anything. The cottage is located in a really beautiful area close to bush walks, shops and a short drive to the CBD. The property has a lovely garden which provides a nice private outdoor space to enjoy. Would definitely recommend Jenny's place to others.

Hawker cottage

This cottage was fairly well equiped for a self sufficient stay, but was really musty and damp. Unplleasant odour lingered dedpit efforts to air th Ed cottage. Had a washing machine but no dryer, so difficult to dry clothing if the weather is damp and rainy .

A Gem In Hawker

The initial impression when you see the house is fantastic. It is surrounded by a native garden and wild galas, parrots, and magpies all clamoring for singing space. There is decent off road parking and all retail outlets are within a 10 minute drive. The rental space is a detached one bedroom flat that is fully equipped for a stay of weeks. Everything in the rental worked and was in good condition. WiFi worked even though it did not have the speed we were used to having, but that is minor. We would recommend this place highly, but hesitate to do so as it may become too popular and may not be available when we wanted it! Seriously, great place and great value.

A great location and beautiful setting

We loved this cottage in a great location. The kitchen is well stocked with utensils, crockery etc and Jenny the host supplies coffee and tea with milk in the fridge plus a couple of eggs from her chickens and some seeds from her agapantha plants to take away which are all really lovely touches. Jenny came to welcome us as soon as she knew we had arrived which was appreciated. It's a shame that what disappointed is that I found that the cottage could do with a bit of TLC - there are cobwebs on the kitchen wall that could be cleaned away and when we moved the sofa to vacuum under it there was lots of dirt so it appeared it hadn't been cleaned there for a while. The knob on the toilet door has been repaired badly and comes off if you use it! This is a great place to stay in Canberra and with a bit of TLC would be absolutely perfect.

The cottage itself is very lovely! It was clean and the kitchen was equipped with everything we needed. The listing could be updated to note that this a shared housing block where you walk past the main house including deck and front door entrance down a driveway to a granny flat style cottage. While it was private, we could hear the people in the main house and felt the need to keep the curtains drawn the whole time to ensure privacy. All windows opened into the driveway or backyard of the main house.

This is a quaint little cottage next to the owner’s house with a pretty separate garden for guest use. We enjoyed having breakfast outside. The cottage is very well equipped. It was easy to communicate with the owner and it was a short drive (15 mins) into the centre of Canberra.

About the host

Hosted by Jenny stevens

Host profile image
I love travelling and meeting new people. My four children have grown up and have families of their own. I enjoy making sculptures in stone, wood, paper, metal and even gingerbread. Watercolours and acrylics are another medium I explore. Quilt making was my first adventure. I live in the architect designed main house adjacent to the Cottage. Another separate guest apartment is part of that house and could also be available or occupied.

Why they chose this property

The property was bought in 1994 after having lived in Boston and moving from place to place. Our children and myself grew up in Canberra, my parents lived here for 60 years. I have seen Canberra grow from a small country town to a city with the benefits of both. Lakes, art galleries, restaurants, theatres and nature reserves along with easy traffic and bike paths make it very liveable .

What makes this property unique

From the cottage, there is 5 minutes walk to a nature reserve (adjacent to a working farm) where kangaroos can be seen (at dusk or early morning) with views from the hill overlooking Canberra. A very long slide and playground is at the back of the cottage accessed by a laneway. It is part of the primary school but can be enjoyed out of school hours. There are many attractions close by, especially for families - an abboretum with awesome playground (see photo) and bonsai collection, Cockington Green with miniature houses and train, dinosaur museum and a zoo. The cottage is close to Belconnen Lake with 6 km walk and bbq facilities, art gallery and mall. A local shopping centre has everything you may need, including Woolworths, three restaurants, hairdresser, Thai massage, Pilates studio, groceries, petrol station, pharmacy and KFC.
