About this property

The Alice Cabin in Winterland!

So...you're after an adventure. Or maybe it's a cozy escape into the mountains...a getaway from the stresses and routine of daily life. Come escape from it all when you visit the Alice in Winterland Cabin! This mountain community feels magical, and what better way to reconnect, enjoy family time, and simply 'just get away.'

My husband and I love the community of St. Mary's - the history, the land, the neighbors, the views...it's breath-takingly beautiful! This is our vacation home with our 4 children, and we want to share it with you when we can't be there.

A little more about the cabin - it's a one bedroom (cozy and comfortable), one full-bath, a cool 'ladder-loft' that comfortably sleeps two (twin mattresses), a sleeper sofa in the living area, a fully equipped kitchen, a TON of extras including a Pack-N-Play for your littlest one, a fold-out toddler cot, an umbrella stroller to use when strolling through town, various size snow boots during the winter season , snow jackets in size small in women's and medium in men's, snow pants (if they fit, you're welcome to use them), super soft blankets for star viewing, and so many extras.

Step through the 'Looking Glass' and experience snow-topped trees and mountains in the winter and crisp, cool terrain and hummingbirds that whir by during the spring and summer. Spectacular views are what sets our cabin apart. We are 10,000 feet up, and our deck offers an unobstructed view of the mountains. We face the absolutely spectacular sunrises, and go to bed with cozy fires. Please be advised that you will need a 4WD vehicle during snow months (typically late October through April usually) to make it up and down the mountain.

If you'd like a little adventure while you're here, there is plenty to do right up on the mountain, down in Idaho Springs and within a short drive! For the outdoorsy, hiking is very popular (a hike to St. Mary's Glacier is a MUST), ATV tours are a five minute drive away, fishing (we provide 2 passes, poles, and a stocked tackle-box!) to fish in 2 private stocked lakes (catch and release only); horseback riding within 30 minutes, ziplining, white-water rafting, SHOPPING and DINING in quaint Idaho Springs...), but honestly, just buying groceries in town for dinners, watching some movies or your favorite show on satellite with a glass of wine or a local beer on the deck or by the fire may be just what you are seeking. We cherish memories and want this getaway to be 'that memory' for you!

Great stay

We enjoyed celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary in this beautiful, quaint home. The view of the mountains was awesome! Only suggestions would be better lighting in the bedroom and perhaps heat source on the deck of some sort as we would have loved to spend more time outside but did not due to the chilly weather. Thank you for a great vacation!

Perfect Getaway for 2!

We absolutely LOVED everything about this cozy cabin! Perfect size for me and my partner. The views: breathtaking. You literally have the majestic mountains surrounding you. Cabin: gorgeous. So cute and quaint and comfortable. We enjoyed hiking the St Mary's Glacier trails right next to us and driving into Idaho Springs for BBQ. Only thing missing was a fire pit outside. Definitely would return!!

Mountain get-away

My husband and I enjoyed a few days in Colorado last week and stayed at the Alice cabin in winterland. We were very pleased with all aspects of the cabin!! Charlotte, the host, was so accommodating and quick on responding when I reached out with questions. Her instructions for check-in and check-out were very easy to understand. The cabin had everything we needed for our stay and it was very clean. I would recommend this cabin if you are looking for something quiet with a Mountain View! And again, Charlotte was an awesome host! Thanks again for making our get-away an enjoyable one!

Great Stay!

Whenever you rent a place to stay you worry if it will be everything it seems. Alice in Wonderland was everything we hoped for and more. A great place and host. I would highly recommend.

What an experience !

We booked this cabin for my husband and I to have a quiet getaway and unwind. We had no problem finding the cabin as it’s very remote. But you have to have a four wheel drive to get up the mountain and driveway as we found out later for even more. The cabin was fully stocked with everything you would need… but there is so much personal stuff from the owners we had a hard time finding places for our own stuff to store. The layout was perfect and cozy. I think the only issue I would have to say was I had was the cleanliness. It was very dusty as my husband who has dust allergies had a hard time. Thank goodness I brought allergy meds. I think a deep cleaning is needed. On our third day we were hit with a snow storm that had us stuck in the cabin for two and a half days. Luckily we shopped and stocked up as one of the locals warned us it was coming. We got 15 inches of snow and it was the most magical thing I’ve ever experienced. The owner supplied snow boots, gloves and Parkers so we got to play in the snow. There were plenty of board games so we did play games, which we haven’t done in years. Eventually the snow stopped and immediately the plows came and cleared the roads and the driveway. So we were able to get out and make our flight home. All in All it was wonderful. The views are perfect. And it was well worth it. I would return in a heartbeat.

Amazing view and cozy cabin!

We had an absolutely relaxing and wonderful stay at this place. The view from the deck is beautiful! We hiked St Mary’s Glacier trail and walked to the trailhead from the house (it adds about a mile each way). Idaho Springs was about a 25 minute drive and was full of lots of great restaurants (Beaujos for pizza!) and breweries. Thanks for sharing your wonderful place with us!

loved our week long stay at this cabin high up in the mountains

We loved this cabin! At 10,000 ft, we had such beautiful views of the mountains! It was truly breathtaking to sit on the porch and take in all the beauty of Colorado! Owners were helpful when we needed something and caretakers to the property were close to help if needed! Super quiet which allowed us to really enjoy getting away from our normal city routines. Would definitely rent again!

Great time

We loved staying here. Well stocked with anything we needed. Clean. Kiddo loved the loft area. The drive in was a little nerve wracking for a family from sea level but so beautiful and peaceful to enjoy the view from the porch. Spent a day just sledding down the driveway and making snowmen and had a blast. Thank you for having us!

Perfect getaway!

My husband and I brought our 17 month old son to Idaho Springs for a long weekend getaway. The Winterland cabin was everything we were hoping for!!! The cabin was so beautiful - we've had a hard time deciding on our favorite aspect: the wood-fire stove? coffee/wine on the deck with THAT VIEW? the convenient access to St. Mary's Glacier (we hiked to the top twice!)? the amenities in "downtown" Idaho Springs? It's a tough call. Charlotte was very helpful leading up to the trip - providing all of the information we would need to enjoy our stay. I'd recommend this cabin to anyone looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of life, or as a base camp for your outdoor adventures!

Summer Getaway

Fantastic family trip to the mountains. Views were outstanding. Close enough to St Mary’s Glacier you could walk to the trailhead and make it an extended hike (especially if you get a late start and find the parking lots loaded). Get there early if you want a more peaceful glacial experience without massive crowds. Silver Lake up from St Mary’s trail head was a fantastic alpine lake to fish surrounded by Fox Mountain and Kingston Peak coullier. Poles and tackle suffice for our needs as novice, but more serious anglers would want some better options for lures. Could see several trout shoreside and larger fish jumping in the deeper water. Location close enough to Idaho Springs for groceries and restaurants/breweries but far enough to feel secluded. We did notice - as other guests stated - the cleanliness was less than anticipated given the cleaning fees. Cobwebs and crumbs on the tables and counters. Aging carpets and furniture as well. The master bed was also as others have stated as being extremely soft and not as restful for us who like firmer mattresses. None of this detracted from our stay. We’re so glad we found this stay and would stay here again in the future.

Perfect Cabin in the Mountains

This cabin was everything I wanted it to be. We traveled with two small children ages 3 and 5 and had a wonderful time. The best part was that we didn't have to go anywhere to enjoy the snow. We spent a majority of our time sledding down the driveway and playing in the snow around the house. My kids were too little, but I hiked all the way up the hill behind the house and came to a wonderful walking path. My husband said it might have been a fire break (or something like that). Either way, it was dreamy. I was able to hike along in the snow in the perfectly quiet mountain scenery. If you want to get out an about, you are literally 5 minutes away from the St. Mary's glacier hike, and about an hour away from Winter Park which is a gorgeous drive. I would recommend going to Safeway before arriving to the house, particularly during the winter months. This will ensure that you arrive during daylight hours which is important for your first time arriving at the cabin. Also, make sure you follow the directions the owner sends, not google maps. While google maps would have gotten us to the house, the directions the owner gives you allows you to enter the driveway from a particular direction which allows you to get some momentum to get up the driveway. Overall, it was a wonderful stay and I can't wait to go back! Maybe this next time without kids! :-)

Peaceful mountain cabin!

We loved our stay at your cabin! It was exactly what we were hoping for. We arrived late at night so weren't able to see our surroundings until the next morning. When we woke up and looked out the front windows, WOW, the view really took our breath away! Sitting high up on the mountain, we had a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains for miles around, just beautiful! The cabin was very clean and had plenty of room for the five of us (my husband, myself, and our three children). The girls loved the loft space and the view from up there. The deck was the perfect place to watch the sun rise over the mountains while enjoying a morning coffee. There was a hummingbird feeder on the deck which attracted a variety of hummingbirds that would whiz by us, very fun to watch. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed to make our breakfasts and dinners there at the cabin. We were able to buy groceries at the Safeway in Idaho Springs just a short drive away. Each day we enjoyed the drive up and down the mountain just taking in the scenery. We spent one day in Idaho Springs where we had fun visiting the variety of shops and some great restaurants, it was very family-friendly. The St. Mary's Glacier was about a five-minute drive from the cabin. The hike up had us all winded (not used to the altitude!) but was well worth it. The lake and surrounding mountains looked like a scene from The Sound of Music! Definitely a must-do! This was definitely the perfect place for our stay in the area, lots of activities and great hiking nearby. We would love to visit your amazing cabin again!

About the host

Hosted by Charlotte Cantu

Host profile image
Hi, my name is Charlotte. I have the pleasure of raising my three children - two boys and a girl, ranging in age from 7 to 14. We are native Texans but call Colorado our second home. We are a close family, involved with our church and community, and our favorite thing to do is to take family vacations together! I took this picture over Spring Break in 2016, and they couldn't get enough of making snowballs, sledding around the trees, and hiking up behind the cabin.

Why they chose this property

My husband and I visited St. Mary's in August of 2015 on a getaway for just the two of us, and we fell in love with the community, the lovely winding way up the mountain, and we knew we would come back! We were so lucky to happen upon this well-loved gem and we have already been up several times with our family of 6! The St. Mary's community is such a wonderful community with friendly people, absolutely gorgeous mountain views, fresh air and wildlife. We hope you enjoy our 'home away from home' as much as we do!

What makes this property unique

Our cabin is special. We bought it from the original owners, who put a lot of love and care into it over the years. We've added more love to it since we bought it and always listen to our guests' suggestions. The views from the deck are amazing - since the cabin is built into the side of the mountain slope, the views are unobstructed and watching the sunrise from the deck is breathtaking. Perhaps we'll have a budding artist stay at some point and capture a sunrise!
