Traditional Charentais villa near Cognac, with private heated pool and garden

Stone built Charentaise long house set in private grounds at the edge of a hamlet. You enter through a courtyard with a pomegranate tree and wisteria clad walls. To the left is a further arched gateway to the expansive terrace, pool and summerhouse. The villa has been refurbished, but many period features remain. There are two luxurious reception rooms both with wood burning stoves for cosy winter evenings. The downstairs is all tiled with limestone/quarry tile flooring. The kitchen has space to seat 8 and is flooded with light, double doors open onto the main terrace which is equipped with a table seating 12 for al-fresco dining. A further terrace area equipped with seats and a table for lazy sundowner drinks is accessed by the back door. Upstairs in the main house are the 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, one of which has a rolltop bath. There is a romantic, wooden summerhouse in the pool area.

Probably the nicest property we have stayed in in the last 10 years of holidaying in France. Peaceful rural location, well furnished comfortable property where everything worked and was in immaculate order.Unfortunately the temperature never quite climbed enough to make the pool usable, but the surround and the summer house were lovely.

Fantastic property with everything we needed for our stay. Easy to find thanks to great instructions (and Google maps). Supermarkets are quick to get to by car and there’s a variety of brands. We stayed during the 41 heatwave so the pool was a welcome relief. The bedrooms could have done with mosquito nets for the windows but we were provided with fans so that helped us sleep. Travel cot and highchair were provided so less to take in the car!All in all a great property and we’d go back if we were staying in the area again.

Beautifully renovated country house

We are very happy with our stay in this beautiful house in the middle of Cognacs "La grande champagne" wine district. The house is perfect for a big family with its many rooms and bathrooms. The rooms and beds are clean. The communication with both the owner and the caretakers were excellent. A house that we would love to rent again in Cognac.

The house was was very comfortable. Lucy and Andrew - the local managers were very helpful. The pool was perfect, as were all the outdoor areas. We cooked delicious dinners and relaxed in the living rooms. All in all I wait to return! Thank you!

A tranquil rural holiday home

We had a lovely time, the facilities were good and generally as described. The house was truly comfortable, plenty of living space, bedrooms large and airy and shower rooms superb. We enjoyed the pool but it could probably benefit from some updating and maintenance.

Wonderful Family Holiday

We had a great stay 2 week stay at the Rocking Horse. The house is superb and lived fully up to it's billing. The bedrooms are good and spacious, bathrooms spacious and good showers, some great living space and well equipped kitchen. Outside the pool was adequate for our needs and we ate ar the patio dining area all evenings bar one - when it got just a bit too chilly. Location is beautiful looking out on to a vineyard and surrounding area has some great attractions to explore and activities to get stuck into!

What a lovely place!

We have had a lovely week at this house. The pool and garden were great for children and we spent a lot of time relaxing and enjoying this space. The local host Lucy was super helpful and quick to address any queries/ minor issues we had. Lovely picturesque area to cycle around. Play and picnic area and tennis court a short walk/ bike ride from the house which was enjoyed by children. A great place to relax and unwind thank you 😊

Daar Tara and Donnie, We have greatly enjoyed your fantastic home. The house is very comfortable and cozy. On the days that the weather was not very good, we still had a wonderful time. The days at the pool were wonderful. The garden house is nice to be able to enjoy the setting sun in colder weather. The house is located in a quiet and beautiful setting. We have visited many places in the area. Saintes and Angouleme are beautiful places to visit. We would recommend the house to all our friends for a great holiday. We hope to come back again in the future.

Family time in Charente

Just returned from two weeks at this beautiful property with our daughter and two small children. The house really has the wow factor and we loved it from the gorgeous and huge claw foot bath to the swimming pool. The kitchen is so well equipped with plenty of everything although a larger fridge/freezer would add to the experience as the house is suitable for a large group and more cold storage is needed. Bedrooms comfy and two sitting rooms so we could have a peaceful spot when required. Lucy the caretaker took great care of us and fans were provided when temperatures reached 41C! Spectacular thunderstorms followed. The area is awash with vineyards and I’d recommend the local Painteraud Freres tour . So atmospheric. A trip to Cognac is a must and so easy to access. All in all, top notch and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Family get together

We had 6 adults and 2 children, it is a wonderful property which i would happily recommend, the owner is very prompt replying to messages, completely contact free check-in and we had trouble getting the children and adults out of the pool😊😎 A few points (which wouldn't stop us booking again) the plastic tub chairs on the side terrace, there are only 4 it was a lovely spot to sit in the evening but 6 adults- same with the sun lounges by the pool only 4. The chairs around the magnificent large outdoor table were not very substantial- our 4yr old sat on one and it started coming apart! The information folder could be updated the zoo is 12E each not 9E Saying that loved it and would love to go back ❤😎 great place for exploring 😊

Beautiful House

We stay in france every year and this is one of the nicest houses we have stayed in so far . The pictures of this house do not do it justice .. its very beautiful and the putside space is perfect . We had a couple of issues and communication was quick and issues resolved. I felt the cleaning wasnt up to scratch ...dust and cobwebs mainly . I informed the owner who was greatful to be told as they dont live in france. Id also advise on maybe upgrading things like handwash and air freshner ...those little things make all the difference. We will definitely book this house again as its so very beautiful and owners so easy to talk to . You will struggle to find a better house

VERY DISAPPOINTING.

This is a difficult review to write. The main issues were cleanliness, wiring issues and a pool we were not comfortable using. We arrived after an 8 hour drive to major issues with cleanliness. None of the bathrooms/toilets appeared to have been cleaned… faeces and urine splattered in all three toilet bowls, toothpaste sprayed all over the mirrors, sticky floors…this was just not acceptable, especially in times of Covid. The kitchen left a lot to be desired too, with a stained tablecloth, dirty sink, greasy utensils etc. We then turned on the garden lights so we could spend our first night sitting out but, when we turned them on, it blew all the house lights! Unfortunately the next day, now in daylight, we were horrified to see the pool had slimy green algae around all edges and very murky water…difficult to even see to the bottom where there were also areas of dirt. Some of the concrete tiling was also loose around the pool which we felt was dangerous. We were told by the owner it was safe but we had read that cloudy pools could potentially be full of bacteria that could cause infections, stomach problems, eye irritation etc. Couldn’t risk our health. On top of all that, the bbq was very rusty, dirty and again unusable, there were smashed terracotta pots in a walkway from the house to the garden, broken garden tiles attempting to be covered up with furniture and the separate pool house that had been described as ‘romantic’ was just unpleasant. Stained mattress, dirty walls, and had all the garden stuff thrown in there. Very disappointing as we had wanted one couple in our party to have stayed in there, but that was not to be. After everything, especially with a pool that we just didn’t feel safe to swim in, we felt we had to leave the property. We were very upset and disappointed, as we had been looking forward to our week in France for such a long time.

Fab house in a great area

House is charming & comfortable & both Tara & Donnie, the owners, are helpful & quick to respond to any queries. House has some lovely character features but also has completely up to date facilities so makes for a very comfortable base from which to explore the Charente region. We visited in the hottest Feb they’d had since records began so had the benefit of using the vast terrace to dine out on & watch the sunset from. The pool & gorgeous self contained pool house looks like a great area to chill out on in the summer sun. As it was Feb, the evenings were chilly, so we also made use of the wood burning stove in the sitting room. There’s both French & UK tv plus a DVD player & a decent library of films/box sets to watch. The main entrance hall also has a tv & a giant leather sofa - great for escaping the daytime heat. The quaint courtyard at the front of the house includes a large off road parking area which, once the gates are shut, is completely enclosed & private. At the end of the road there’s a park area with a boulodrome, tennis courts & picnic tables. As there were boules in the house we took a bottle of wine with us & spent a very pleasant few hours playing boule & watching red squirrels in the trees. From the door you have an amazing network of vineyards & walnut groves to explore - full of wildlife. I saw more birds of prey here than I’ve seen in my life in Scotland. The Charente area is also a cyclists dream, with quiet roads to spider out on & a signposted 47km circular road route which you can follow from the house (la Flow Velo is a long distance cycle route which will be completed in 2021 but for now can be followed, by MTB, along the banks of the Charente, via Bourg-Charente to either Jarnac or Cognac). My husband highly recommends the Golf du Cognac 18 hole golf course. It also had a very fine terrace from which to enjoy a beer after your game. The Charente is made us of elegant riverside towns, vineyards & sweet villages & the people are so charmingly polite - to each other as well as to us. The Charente is steeped in brandy making history with grand Cognac houses at every turn. If you’re looking for a chilled out holiday in a rural area full of history & wildlife, good food & wine within a region that offers all the convenience of modern living but where the tradition of making time for people & food is still very important, then this is the place for you.

Excellent séjour au coeur du vignoble de Cognac
