About this property

Rose Cottage, Middleton - a cottage that sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms

Nestled in the heart of the charming West Sussex village of Middleton-on-Sea, Rose Cottage is a true hidden gem. This picture-book cottage is brimming with character and offers the perfect setting for a relaxing countryside escape.

Dating back to at least 1606, Rose Cottage is Grade II listed and steeped in history. It was meticulously restored over two years by previous owners, working closely with English Heritage to ensure every detail honoured the cottage's original character. Traditional materials and techniques were used throughout the renovation, and some of the craftsmanship can be viewed through dedicated display panels within the cottage. The property was recognised with a Conservation Award in 2008 and proudly holds a 4-star rating from the English Quality in Tourism scheme.

Inside, the cottage offers cosy and comfortable accommodation. The sitting room features a wood-burning stove for chilly evenings and a TV with FreeSat channels for your entertainment. The kitchen is well equipped with modern appliances, including a slimline dishwasher. The standout feature is the charming double bedroom, complete with exposed beams and a unique bed crafted using old stocks. There is also a second bedroom with bunk beds, ideal for families, and a modern wet-room with a shower, wash basin and toilet.

Step outside to find beautifully maintained gardens, with colourful flower beds and neatly kept lawns. A bistro set provides the perfect spot to enjoy your morning coffee or afternoon tea al fresco. There's also off-road parking and a converted garage that now serves as a utility room and secure storage area — perfect for sports equipment or a treasured vehicle.

The village of Middleton-on-Sea is a delight in itself. Just a short stroll from the cottage, you'll find local shops, inviting coffee houses, and a highly rated fish and chip shop. The village is rich in character, with historic architecture and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. The beach is also nearby and can be reached on foot via a private estate. The local area offers an abundance of walking and cycling routes, including access to the stunning South Downs National Park.

For day trips, the nearby coastal towns of Bognor Regis and Littlehampton offer classic seaside charm, complete with promenades, sweet shops and piers. Head a little further inland to the cathedral city of Chichester, known for its Roman heritage, lively arts scene, and beautiful historic streets. The world-renowned Goodwood Estate is also close by, home to major events such as the Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival.

The location is well connected, with easy access to the vibrant cities of Brighton and Portsmouth. In Portsmouth, highlights include the Historic Dockyard and the rich maritime history of the British Navy. From Chichester and Bognor Regis, direct rail links to London make Rose Cottage an ideal base for both relaxing retreats and cultural adventures.

Cosy cottage

I love this cottage and you pay to stay in a beautiful old cosy cottage which is steeped in history. The garden is delightful and you are very close to Middleton -on- sea village, with two or three pubs within walking distance and the beach 10 min walk away. . It is not for everybody. I have stayed before so knew what to expect. The cottage is small inside but cool on hot summer days. Access would be difficult for anyone with mobility issues and there is no room to eat at table inside. However there is a picnic bench in the garden and another little table and chairs so you can eat outside when the weather is good . The major plus is how cute the cottage is. It has so much character and it really makes you smile when you look at it from the outside. Im sure we will be back. Many Thanks we had great weather and a great time

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are so pleased you revisited Rose Cottage. Due to the age of the cottage it does have some quirky low beams and uneven floors but we hope this adds to the character and charm :-)

Lovely Cottage !!

Found the Property Easy enough. Parking outside the garage was perfect. Just be aware of reversing onto the road. Getting into to the property with the key codes was perfectly OK. Ans easy to achieve. Everything you possibly need is either in the garage or on the cottage!! Which we've never had before when renting a property for a week. Very thoughtful. Gardens were lovely and so is the gardener!! Our only issues were the mattresses are not that comfy what so ever. We played musical beds most nights, until we were in a bed we found comfortable. And the property wasn't that clean. Everything was sticky in kitchen! Before we left our review in the book, the cleanliness is the common and only issue that let's the property down !!

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I'm very sorry to hear that the beds have been uncomfortable. We will pass this onto the host and look into this. I don't have a note of any cleanliness issues being reported. I sincerely apologise for any issue and will speak with housekeeping. I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay. Please do book again.

Rose cottage comfort

Springs in top bunk poking through, uncomfortable for grandson. No mention of the fact there was not a table to sit at for meals which is difficult for young children to balance plates on their lap. But otherwise a lovely cottage.

Beautiful cottage

Positive: * Very charming cottage * Good bathroom * Beautiful garden * Excellent location * Very well equipped. Good set of pots and pans, lots of kitchen utensils. In addition, in the electronics department, there is wifi, Chromecast and dvd player available. Also extra lounge chairs, washing machine and freezer in the garage. Some points to consider: * No dining table. We did not mind since the weather was nice * Matrasses could use an upgrade.

Beautiful cottage

Beautiful traditional little cottage with beautiful gardens the only down side is being on the corner of two main roads. However, this does mean that you are only a short walk away from the local shops and pubs and just a little further walk from the beach.

Cozy and well appointed. Ancient and modern.

This is a lovely place. The rooms are small, but despite this there is no feeling of claustrophobia. A lovely atmosphere. When I booked Rose cottage, I didn't realise the family significance of the place for my friend, so relatives came to visit the place where their great grandfather used to live.
