Excellent place to stay for a family of four.
This is my second stay at the Walmgate property, but our first in the cottage in the back garden. The property ha supper location, and a charming old building with lots of personality and a wonderful atmosphere. Closely located to several supermarkets for convenient food shopping.

A cosy and quirky cottage
Walmgate cottage is an excellent base for a short trip to York. It is a 10 minute walk from the centre of the city, which means it is pretty quiet. The cottage was warm and cosy, and everything was clean. If you are unsteady on your feet, be advised be that the upstairs floors are a little bit uneven due to the age of the property, but that was not an issue for us.
The facilities were good, and although we did not cook for ourselves, the kitchen seemed to have a good level of equipment. We enjoyed having the extra space and lounge, kitchen etc that we would not have got if we had booked a hotel room.

Hi There,
Thank you so much for the wonderful review. We are very glad you enjoyed your stay with us and that you found it cosy and clean! The quiet but central location is indeed a guest favourite.
Thank you as well for mentioning the floors, the property has a lot of quirky original features, this being one of them! We will look into making this more clear, however, for full transparency.
We’d be delighted to welcome you back again in the future.
Kind regards,
Stays York
The location was really convenient and easy to walk to restaurants, The Shambles, etc. The place was nice and clean, but it does have a very noticeable slant that made walk through the place sometimes feel like a fun house.
Property was clean and well equipped. Very convenient to the main shopping centre and restaurants. Host was excellent communicator.

Fantastic location and cottage bang in the centre of York.
Great location, within walking distance of everything the City of York offers.
We loved the fact that we parked the car up and were able to enjoy walking everywhere, taking in the history.
Even though it was centrally located, we had access to a lovely courtyard garden if we just wanted to sit and relax after our day out and about.

Amazing!
Everything was so clean! Lovely welcome package with tea bags, coffee etc. Location was perfect, 15 minute walk to train station, 5 minutes to Shambles and Minster. Beds were comfortable and it was brilliant to have a smart tv, really felt like home from home. Cottage is on a slant but you get used to it after a while. Will definitely recommend and stay again!

Great location
Lovely cottage, just lacking some little finishing touches. Eg. Towel rail in toilet, nice welcome hamper, more kitchen utensils, just small things that make a difference!
The cottage is very central, and Walmgate—especially in autumn—is a lovely short walk. We really appreciated being so close to the shops, and there are so many restaurants nearby. With children aged 10 and under, we didn’t want long walks, so it was ideal to feed the boys and get back to the house at a decent time. The cottage itself is set back from the road behind the main building, which we liked as it felt secluded even though we were so central. The rooms are nicely decorated (though we’re not big Queen fans!).York itself was great and we had a brilliant time. The car parking was much appreciated as York isn’t the easiest city for driving.Overall, it’s a lovely place to stay in a fantastic location, and we may well be back in the future.Small gripes:Only 3 knives (why?)Only 4 tumblers – we didn’t really want the kids using wine glassesThe kitchen is quite minimally equipped; we’d have struggled to cook full meals, so it’s best suited to breakfast and lunch rather than full family dinnersThe TV remote buttons have worn off, so you’re guessing what you’re pressingOn arrival there was a cotton bud on the master bedroom floor and half a glass of water on the nightstand, which suggests the clean wasn’t thorough

York gem!
Walmgate cottage was perfect for us (family of 4) right in the centre of York, walking distance to all the attractions and shops and restaurants on the doorstep. Once the car was parked we didn't need it again and the parking permit provided saves ££s.
Walmgate cottage was everything we wanted. Clean, quirky, cosy, beautiful and everything we needed.
Stays York were amazing - we booked Christmas day, they confirmed booking on boxing day and we arrived a day later. Thank you. And the welcome goody bag was the best we have had at any holiday cottage ever.

Overall, excellent.
Overally very pleased. The property definitely has character and quirky features but we liked it. Rooms were clean and decor nice too. Couldnt really find fault other than to say parking can be a problem. Inaumed for George street as suggested which was full so had to drive around. Took me about 20 mins of searching the council website to find parking allocated to r18 permit - would be useful to include this i feel in your welcome pack.
Kitchen was well supplied. The host provided a welcome package which was a very nice touch! There was a helpful booklet giving need to know information about the flat. The advertisement notified us about the sloping floors so we were not surprized about that - we had some laughter watching each other walk like drunken sailors! However, it would be nice if the bed in the main bedroom would be leveled- we felt as if we might roll off during the night. Also maybe level the dresser in that room - when i placed items on top they rolled/fell to the floorto. Also, we noticed that the shower wall leaks and it seems there are water stains on the ceiling in the room below. You may wish to have that fixed to prevent additional maintenance problems. Thanks for an overall pleasant stay!

Liked: Check-in, location, listing accuracy
Disliked: Communication
Walmgate Cottage
Walmgate Cottage is a pretty house in a great location. The sloping floors were part of the charm for us though levelling the bed in the first bedroom might be helpful. We noted that previous requests for more than one tea towel and a little more basic kitchen equipment had not been taken up. Our party of four adults for three nights were given a tiny amount of an old loo paper roll and I did ring the office in a nice way to request a couple of new ones but this was not acted upon. I think it was a pity to have to spend a holiday weekend shopping for this - perhaps the office agrees?
The location of the Cottage is 5* easy walking distance to the Jorvik, York museum, Shambles, river cruise and lots of restaurants and pubs. York Minster is also nearby.
The photo of the Cottage at the back of the building is accurate and can be accessed through the main building (it has steps down) or side entrance (all flat)
Previous reviews have said the cottage floors slope, and yes they do, we got used to this quite quickly and it added to the quirkiness of the Cottage. The Cottage was well equipped and comfortable, bigger than the photos suggest. The windows do open onto the river.
I really recommend this Cottage for anyone who likes old buildings and comfy accommodation, if you want a square box hotel room, it’s not for you!
We parked our car up for the duration of our stay and walked everywhere.
Finally I wanted to share that I stayed here with my parents aged 87years and 81 years, they use walking sticks and loved the cottage and location! Well done Stays York for the great service too!

A quaint apartment in the centre of York
On entering this property, we found it to be clean and comfortable.
This property however has markedly sloping floors which affect the stairway and the upper level.
Although my friend and I are active 70year olds, we found this to be a problem , and we were certainly at risk of losing our balance….or even falling.
We were surprised that this issue had not been highlighted on booking.
The doors upstairs tend to swing unexpectedly and because they are not straight, they are heavy.
This apartment is not really suitable for older people, young children, or anyone with mobility issues.
We did however enjoy the central location of this property.

Sunshine and kindness
A delightful cottage on the Floss river where we would watch a family is Swans glide by daily .Truely idillic the cottage had everything we needed. The cleaners did and amazing weekly clean. The space was large and quiet but right in the middle of all the activity.
Stays management we’re very responsive to everything we required. We totally recommend .

I stayed in the cottage for three months and I was very sad to leave. It's very comfortable, private and secure. The team at stays york were really nice to communicate with. Always quick to reply to emails and answer questions.
Would definitely recommend this cottage and this company if looking for a short term rental property. It's right In the centre of York with everything needed on the doorstep
