In the 16th century, the cottage started its life as a simple timber, wattle and daub, thatched property, with a hole in the roof acting as a chimney. Families would sleep in the upper space, using a makeshift ladder, whilst animals would sleep downstairs. During the 17th century, a staircase would have been made, to give better access to the upper floor. The cottage was extended in the 18th century, when a bread oven was installed in the inglenook fireplace. This is what gave the cottage its name Batchcott (bread supplied/cottage). In the 1930s the cottage was further extended to become a ‘proper’ house. It was then modernised in 1978 as a granny annexe.
The town of Ludlow lies in the shadow of the 13th-century Ludlow Castle which regularly holds events and is a must day out for guests stopping at the property. The town itself also boasts an array of shops, bars and restaurants for guests to enjoy.
Ludlow is at the start of the Mortimer Trail, a long-distance path to Kington on the Herefordshire/Wales border and boasts stunning views throughout. There are also breathtaking walks and views nearby, out from the Clee Hill.
After a day sightseeing and enjoying all that Shropshire has to offer, why not sit out in the private gardens at the property, with a glass of wine, and enjoy the peace and tranquillity that the location offers? The Cottage boasts a large rear garden with small terrace, lawn and summerhouse, and bird watchers will delight in the number of species visiting the garden. Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant 2½ miles.
