About this property

Booth Cottage: Walk down a private path to fabled Singing Beach.

Known as "Booth Cottage", this charming and historic vacation rental home once belonged to actor Junius Brutus Booth, Jr., a Lincoln supporter but also the brother of the infamous John Wilkes Booth. In the later part of the 19th century, the property was part of the grand Masconomo Hotel, site of the first outdoor performance of Shakespeare under electric lights. What's more, the movie "State and Main" was filmed in this very house and more recently, the Academy Award-winning movie "Manchester by the Sea" was filmed in spots you'll recognize all around the area.

The current incarnation of this historic home is divided into two separate dwellings, in a duplex fashion. One of the units, a remnant of the hotel, is the residence of the owner, and the other, the original Booth summer home, is all for you! Its many spacious rooms have high ceilings and oversized windows that capture the summer breezes. For a closer look at the sea, walk down the private mowed path to beautiful Singing Beach, named for the sounds that emanate from walking on the sand. A short walk in the other direction leads to the village center and the commuter train that can take you south to Salem and Boston or north to Gloucester and Rockport.

Dogs allowed on a case-by-case basis. No Smoking.

Booth Cottage Disappointment
Rating Details: The property manager was somewhat unhelpful. The vacation rental was somewhat dirty. I was very happy with the location. I was very dissatisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Wish we could give a good review for our stay here. The location is great, but, sadly, the house has been very neglected and shouldn’t be a short-term rental. The kitchen is very poorly equipped. Cooking was nearly impossible. And during our stay, we had no hot water on our first night (owner forgot to turn it on), a coffee pot that died on our second day, a fridge that sounded like a jet plane that finally got replaced, an electric outlet that died, etc. The house is full of history and could be a real gem. But its shabby, neglected condition means we wouldn’t stay again or recommend it, nor will we ever rent with AVH again.
