HIGHLIGHTS: Blandine from Paris said "The highlight of my five days in this property was watching my three teens (12, 15 &16) have so much fun swimming in the river right outside the door, while I read a book or two in the shade and kept an eye on their fun. Perfect!"

WELCOME: We will always be there to welcome you upon arrival. A short tour of the facilities and quirks of this lovely home, and we will leave you to get on with the business of enjoying your vacation. This property is a modern (interior), in-town, self-catering, independent home.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME: This stunning 4 - star white Charentais stone holiday home with it's iconic blue shutters and gracious, modern interior has been thoughtfully renovated for comfort and ease of living. You will enjoy the attention to detail and the calming colours and décor.

MODERN: With an eat-in kitchen containing all modern conveniences and appliances, we hope you will probably enjoy cooking at home, much of the time.
Basic grocery items provided incl. Butter, milk, oil, salt and pepper, tea, coffee.
We also provide some special treats and a couple of bottles of wine, to welcome you to the Charente.

OUTDOOR DINING: The front terrace is where you can enjoy all your meals, Apero or reading a book. There is a table and 4 chairs situated here.
Take a Picnic to the Garden.
Watch the small world go by in relative privacy.

FOOD: The Café/Bar/Restaurant/Depot de Pain (La Maison du Passeur) and (excellent) lunch restaurant (approx. 17 eur ea, incl. 1/4 of wine!, RDV advised.) is mere steps away. They also sell magazines and stamps/La Poste/lottery/tabac.
Michelin starred restaurant (La Ribaudiere) with menus for most budgets is also a neighbour.

SWIM: Directly opposite the Charente River and a fabulous safe swimming hole. The designated Swimming Hole/ rope swing in the river opposite the house, will invite open air fun for the whole family. Water quality is carefully monitored to be safe for swimming.
POOLS: If you want chlorinated water, there is a large new swimming pool complex in Cognac( X'Eau), just 10mins away, and recently renovated pool in Jarnac, 5kms away.
5 Super Water Parks within 45 mins drive.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES:
You can walk, cycle and follow designated paths from this village. It is a wonderful place to do nothing much except sit beside the river and watch the world go by.
Kayak rentals in town, Bikes delivered to the door.
Children will love the open spaces, and enjoy the kms of walking and biking paths in the area.
Golf Cognac is just 3kms away.

GARDEN: We have a large, private, tree and structure shaded garden just steps down a private Chemin from the house, with loungers, picnic tables and outdoor games.

BEACHES: Atlantic beaches for a day out, just 60 mins away, are Royan and Rochefort. La Rochelle is only 90 minutes.

OTHER THINGS TO DO:
Enjoy a visit to Bordeaux, St Emilion and Arcachon, approx. 90 minutes away. Dordogne towns (e.g. Brantome) are an hour away, and there are so many choices in the Charente, you will have to plan your days carefully~! All this is detailed in our Welcome Folder.

FOOD SHOPPING: Jarnac (5kms), Cognac (8kms)

CHILDREN: This property does not provide for children younger than 5 yrs old. They will need to be toilet trained, negotiate steep stairs on their own and sit at the dining table. Parents much provide their own toys (for hygiene reasons). There is unsecured water opposite the house (Charente River) and beside the sister house is an unsecured Natural water Spring (Fontaine). These water hazards are not fenced. Parents must be vigilant.

Lovely comfortable stay

Spotlessly clean, well equipped and very comfortable. Beautiful location. Great communication throughout with very minor issues resolved immediately. A thoroughly relaxing break; would return if travelling to this area again.

Beautiful village property

This house is exceptional. Monica and Warren have given thought to everything needed for a great holiday here, from lovely colour schemes to extremely comfortable seating and beds and very well equipped kitchen and fantastic showers. We wouldn't fault anything. The owners are warm, welcoming and informative and the welcome "goodies" very generous. We enjoyed breakfast and evening drinks on the little terrace with its view of the river. The garden would have been perfect for afternoons when shade is needed (it was a hot week) but we were out and about a lot and so did not make full use of it. This was a very convenient base for everything we wanted to do. The river walks are stunning, Jarnac is within east walking distance along the river and Cognac is doable for those liking longer walks. I believe that this is usually a very quiet tranquil village but we stayed during of 3 amazing nights of Son et Lumiere on and around the river and village square celebrating the history of the region. It was all very exciting but noisy with rehearsals and performances going on past midnight. It was quite a shock to us oldies ,used to being in bed well before that but it was a really good way to experience the culture of the region. Although we didn't take advantage of it, I'm sure foodies would love the Michelin guide restaurant right next door. We may go back to experience the peace and quiet and if we do we will not hesitate to book this property again. We loved our holiday.

Loved it!

We absolutely loved staying at Monica and Warren’s beautiful house. Monica and Warren were the perfect hosts and we have never stayed in a house so well and so thoughtfully equipped. The house is in the pretty, tranquil village of Bourg Charente and overlooks the river Charente across a quiet paved area. The house was even better than it looked in the photos and our daughter loved her room so much she didn’t want to leave it! We enjoyed sitting on the little terrace enjoying a coffee, watching the swallows from our window and exploring the local area such as the lovely towns of Cognac and Saintes. The river however was the focus of our stay and we took every opportunity to swim in its beautiful clear waters both close to the house and from other little towns dotted along the Charente. Our kids spent hours on the rope swing over the water and it was lovely to see that it is brimming with wildlife. On our last day we had a beautiful cool swim in blazing sun beneath the local chateau whilst a couple of kingfishers flew just above us and dragonflies danced around us. Says it all. Hope to come back.

Warren and Monica are friendly, adventurous New Zealanders (Kiwis) living The Good Life in the glorious Grand Champagne, 1er Cru area of Cognac in the Charente.
Prior to retiring to France, they lived aboard their 18m motor yacht for 6 years, and cruised more than 12k kms in the south and eastern USA, and completed America's Great Loop through the USA and Canada in 2014.
Monica spent most of her adult working life in the Hospitality Industry (Hotel and Restaurant Management et al), and Warren had a previous life as an Industrial Chemist/Computer guru and Monsieur Fix-Anything. They feel that this makes them ideally suited to their new passion of welcoming guests to their holiday homes and promoting the Cognac Region in general.

Why they chose this property

We bought this property and the house next door to it because of it's fabulous riverside location. Golf, walk, run, cycle, boat/kayak, swim...whatever takes your fancy. You can have an active vacation or inactive, as you choose. We love the old houses with modern interiors and amenities, making the most of the ancient details and celebrating days gone by. You couldn't find a property more perfectly situated for a relaxing vacation right opposite the Charente River.

What makes this property unique

Being front and centre in a tiny Charentaise town where they produce Cognac and opposite the Chateau Bourg where they produce Grand Marnier!
The view of the river is lovely. There is plenty going on in this little town during Summer months, and you are right in the middle of it.
You can walk everywhere...even 5 kms to Jarnac past the vines and Chateau Cressé , and go to markets in any of a dozen towns local to the area. We provide a list !. The property is literally five minutes drive (1km) to highway N141 which takes you to Cognac, or Angouleme/Saintes/St Jean d'Angely/Royan/La Rochelle. It is also 90 minutes drive from three airports: Limoges, La Rochelle and Bordeaux. Cant get better than that!
