About this property

Peaceful location a short walk To One Of Frances Most Beautiful Villages

Situated on a quiet lane, The Old Barn has 4000m² of mature gardens with views of surrounding countryside. From here you can enjoy a walk to the picturesque medieval village of Saint Jean de Cole – one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages, with its restaurants, shops, Chateau, historic church and Tourist information office.
Opening the French doors takes you to another world. Fresh air and birdsong, flowers and trees wafting in the breeze – take in the view over the gardens from the patio, relax and sip a glass of wine in the shade of the parasol, light up a barbecue and dine “en plein air”.
When it’s time for bed, upstairs there are two large bedrooms to welcome you to slumber - a double bedroom with shower room and views over the garden plus a twin bedroom with bathroom next door which has a shower over the bath.
The light and spacious ground floor open plan area provides the lounge, dining and kitchen areas with modern appliances and comfortable furnishing sitting alongside typical French décor and ornaments . The dressers are stocked with all the equipment and utensils you may need. There is private gated parking. Inside, the thick stone walls keep the cottage cool in those hot summer months.
Oak beams, exposed stone walls and chestnut wood floors are featured in the bedrooms which have antique wardrobes and dressing tables. The Barn has a new flat screen TV with UK free-view and French channels and Wi-Fi. It has its own entrance and outside seating area to the rear.
Our house and The Old Barn are separated by a section of the original Barn and outside, a hedge and garden gate, allowing privacy from the other section of the property. Each has its own access to the lower garden.
Wandering around the garden, you may want to pick some fruit from the trees in the orchard or just sit on the lower garden terrace with a glass of your favourite tipple and listen to the fish jumping in the lake. Watch out for the Sammy the red squirrel, the deer, coypu and myriad of different birds that pass by the garden from time to time. Enjoy ! We will be here to welcome you and will always be close by if needed.

This is a very well renovated property in a peaceful location within easy walking distance to the town of St Jean de Cole. The hosts were really helpful with directions to find the property and a walk through of the facilities.

An excellent holiday

An out of this world location the property and the village of Saint Jean de Cole. Our hosts were brilliant easy going lovely people the facility could not have been better. Also the property is situated in easy distance of many other beautiful and historic towns with a fantastic recreational lake close by which cost nothing ether to park of use the facility. Indeed in all the holiday in France never paid for parking at all.

A most enjoyable experience

A peaceful location, spacious and comfortable. Interior decor striking and the exterior offers the opportunity to sit, sprawl, relax, wander and listen to bird and frog life. The village offers good restaurants a shop a pharmacy, tourist info, as well as 12th century church and chateau. Carolyn and John provide excellent information, both personally and in a crisply written 2 page document. Aost enjoyable stay.

Fantastic location for seclusion and things to do

We had a lovely couple of weeks in St Jean De Cole. The property was spotlessly clean and the towels and bed sheets were changed mid stay. The house has all the required amenities, has a lovely patio area attached to the house, multiple seating areas outside and a wonderful garden leading down to the stream. The location is fantastic for both seclusion but also easy access to a wide range of activities and other sites. We crammed in a huge amount of things in the fortnight we were there and only really touched the surface of what is available to do, both locally and within an hours drive. We particularly enjoyed the huge variety of Chateau's, many within a 30 minute drive. Beautiful towns such as Perigord, Brive and Sarlat are all easily accessible, as are the caves at Lascaux. The beautiful village of St Jean de Cole is a gentle walk away and has a number of bars and restaurants. Our trip coincided with Bastille day and there was street theatre and live music in the square. John & Carolyn were both very attentive hosts without being in any way intrusive. They have brought the property up to a beautiful standard. The house was cool, even in 30+ degree heat outside. Drive parking was easy and secure. Supermarkets and shops in easy reach.

Peaceful seclusion

The gite is in a rural setting with a lovely stroll to the attractive nearby village. The well maintained gardens are sublime with plenty of seating to enjoy the sights and sounds of the countryside. Walks from the doorstep and plenty to see and do in the nearby area. The hosts are welcoming and very helpful. We would love to go back to stay in this beautiful gite which had everything we needed for a fabulous week.

Charming Gite

Well furnished, roomy and comfortable. The grounds and outdoor patio are wonderful. The village was a bit quiet this time of year but we enjoyed long walks and randonees in the countryside. The owners were a lovely couple, friendly while providing privacy.

Charmant cottage

Hervorragend: gute Wegbeschreibung, super Wlan Verbindung, toller Herd, gemütliche Loungearrea. Gut zu wissen: Endreinigung nicht inbegriffen!

The other heavenly spot!

Just returned from a lovely holiday staying in this cottage and also the one next door! They are both wonderful. I rented both for a family holiday which worked really well. Beautifully presented and spotlessly clean. Everything that you'd need is provided as well as a thoughtful welcome pack of bread, milk, pate and cheese. John and Carolyn are very friendly and welcomed us on arrival with the keys and a tour of the cottages and lots of helpful local info. They very kindly made a dinner booking for us on the night we arrived at one of the restaurants in the village. The location is great - loads to visit and see in the local area and some nice walks. If you just want to stay put the garden is amazing - really large and a lovely spot for relaxing. I'd highly recommend this cottage.

Lovely stay in a peaceful setting.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Farmhouse. Communication with the owners before the trip was excellent and John and Carolynn were most helpful. The house was delightful; clean, cool, and very comfortable. We loved using all the outside space, especially sitting in the shade by the stream reading our books! Lovely peaceful, rural area of France but with some lively villages and towns within easy reach. Thanks for a great stay!

Perfect location

A beautiful and deceptively large property located 20 minutes walk from one of Frances prettiest villages. We divided our week visiting nearby Chateau: The impressive and imposing Jumilhac-le-Grand, the picturesque Puyguilhem at Villars where we also visited the caves. Stalagmites and stalactites and 9000 year old cave paintings. We tended to use the garden to BBQ in the evenings.

What was there not to like!!

We have just returned from the most idyllic week at John and Carolyn’s property - L’Ancienne Ferme - close to the village of St Jean de Côle in the Périgord Region of France. The property was beautifully presented and absolutely spotless with great attention to detail for our comfort in both decor and equipment provided. John and Carolyn could not have been more friendly and helpful from personally greeting us upon our arrival and showing us the ropes to caring touches like essentials in the fridge to start us off - the Rosé was delicious and very rejuvenating! All this was complemented by the lovely well kept large garden with the secluded patio for our private use enjoying all day sunshine and the most comfortable covered lounging area in which to cool off or enjoy “un apéro after a busy day!” The village was within a 15 minute flat walk for the croissants etc and the small shop certainly provided basic day to day needs. We have been lucky enough to visit some delightful French areas in our time and just when you think it cannot get any better - there’s St Jean - which has to be up there with the very best. For us it rates as one of the most picturesque and unspoilt villages with opportunities from eating outdoors in the square to exploring all the charms it has to offer. Thank you John and Carolyn for sharing your lovely home with us - we certainly hope to return for more of the same before too long. We highly recommend L’Ancienne Ferme. Kind regards - Carol and Tony

Excellent sejour

We found this beautiful and characterful property to be clean, spacious and very well presented. It lacked nothing that we needed, and was comfortable to live in, with plenty of outside space to chill out in. John and Carolyn provided a very warm personal welcome and a useful welcome pack which included wine, cheese and milk. During our stay we had a couple of very minor issues which were fully dealt with within a couple of hours of informing the owners. Saint Jean de Cole is a very picturesque little village, but we particularly loved Brantome, a local town, which is a real gem of a place and has a wide range of restaurants and shops. The cottage location was a little further away from the Dordogne river itself than we had realised - we hadn't done our homework properly, but we made the journey twice and the towns (especially Sarlot) and villages (Domme, Belves, Beynec, Monpazier, etc.) are well worth the trip. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and will visit the Dordogne again.

Comfortable, relaxing break

Just back from a relaxing week at L’Ancienne Ferme. We were looking for a comfortable base with a king-sized bed, and the property did not disappoint. We stayed in the farmhouse which is the owner’s home in the winter months and it was beautifully furnished and fully equipped; with a lovely bathroom and garden. St Jean de Cole is a beautiful village a short drive away and we found some good restaurants there. Worth noting though that a couple of the restaurants were beginning to close for the end of the season, towards the end of September. The owners were helpful but not intrusive. If you’re after a relaxing, quiet break in rural France we can recommend this property.

Perfection!

This property certainly has the wow factor. Beautifully furnished and probably the cleanest gite/rentle I’ve ever been in. Carolyn and John were perfect hosts and nothing was too much trouble. The gardens are beautiful and serene, so much so we spent a vast amount of time watching wildlife and reading. My friend and I would certainly have no qualms recommending their home. Thanks to you both we are on our way home and feel we truely have had a holiday.

Quiet and relaxing

Lovely quiet and cosy barn conversation. Excellent facilities and a great outdoor area. Dinning area with shade and a lounging area reminicent of a Roman villa, great. When we arrived all we wanted was a sit down in a shaded area with a cool drink and this was perfect. A well equipped kitchen or if you prefer a village with several restaurants to choose from about 15minutes walk away. Lovely garden to walk round and plenty of wild life. To finish a comfortable lounge and English television. John and Carolyn were very helpful and keep the barn spotless Highly recommended.

About the host

We have lived in France since 2004. Having lived in the Perpignan area, we decided to move to St Jean de Cole in April 2014 after discovering this beautiful village.

Why they chose this property

The house enjoys the peace & quiet of the countryside but the village is just a short walk away.

What makes this property unique

The view at sunrise is stunning - makes a brilliant start to the day.
