This is a beautifully restored apartment on the top floor, where mellow character and lovely original features are allied to contemporary light and creature comforts. It is the ultimate getaway, with the lovely private peaceful sun terrace where you can sit and watch the sunset and views of St Vincent Cathedral in all its glory whilst enjoying an aperitif.
There is an open plan layout .The kitchen is fully equipped with all you need to create a gourmet meal (although the restaurants are plentiful in the vicinity) or just have a simple snack.
Following on from this is the comfortable lounge which extends onto the sun terrace. There is _French TV avilable DVD player, music centre (including ipod docking station) and a range of books and magazines to enjoy.
There is a good sized double bedroom with fitted wardrobes and vanity unit with hairdryer supplied.
There is a modern twist to the bathroom with an ergonomic luxury power shower with body jets and overhead spray

Situated in the Bastide de St. Louis in the center of Carcassonne This 16th century house with original features and modern facilities, has separate secluded sun terraces. Carefully restored into separate apartments, with lots of original character. The perfect location to reach La Cite, Canal du Midi, cafes, restaurants and places of interest. Toulouse, Narbonne and the Mediterranean all within an hours reach.

A lovely, well-located apartment

The apartment was great - in an excellent location close to shops and restaurants in the village square and within easy walking distance from the old city. The apartment itself had everything we needed and included a nice private balcony which added to the ambience. We would definately choose to stay again if we are back in Carcassonne. Thanks Richard for a great exprerience!

Good central location - Very good customer service

Couple of minor issues when we arrived, dealt with very very quickly by the owner - can't fault the customer service! Nice clean apartment near the town centre on a quiet street. Lots of parking nearby. Lots to do in the area especially if you enjoy history and castles. Municipal lake nearby for swimming.

Beautiful Carcassone in Merlot

Such a very sweet place to stay - for one or two people - plenty of room - everything you want is there . Back terrace looking to St Vincent and it’s bells is fantastic . Kitchen /Bathroom very well equiped . 3 flights narrow stairs but it’s worth the climb .

Great apartment!

Raymond met us at the station at 9.00 pm and drove us there even though it was only a 5 minute walk. He was excellent, showing us all facilities and letting us know about the sights of Carcassonne. He even let us stay until 1.00 pm on our third and final day when we were delayed due to a train strike. The apartment was clean, well maintained, had everything we wanted and was quite roomy. We would recommend it to others and would certainly stay there again.

Great stay!

We really enjoyed our 4 days in Carcassonne. Raymond was kind enough to meet us at the airport and give us a short tour which was very much appreciated. The apartment was up very steep stairs which was fine for us but if you had any mobility problems, you would struggle. There is a lovely balcony overlooking trees and church at the back....we enjoyed having breakfast here. The street at the front (bedroom side) is very noisy but ear plugs sorted that out. The apartment is great, really authentic and rustic and easy walking distance to the old medieval city. We would really recommend this place.

A good place to stay

We arrived early and were lucky to be able to check in before 4. Unfortunately, the check in was hurried and we did not get any information about the unit. Also, the stairs are very tight and steep so be careful with luggage. The apartment itself is a good size with a nice bed and extra pillows and quilts. The windows block out street noise well. The back patio is a real treat and the bells from the nearby church are delightful. Our biggest issue was that the internet was terrible. Richard was very quick to respond to our concerns but they were not resolved.

As other guest say the balcony is wonderful, and really enhances the space, which is quite tranquil. But also the location is very special. 10 minutes walk from the railway station, and six days a week within 5 Minutes walk from old town restaurants and shops. It is in a residential street to expect normal noise from other residents. Overall excellent.

Wonderful apartment

We really enjoyed our stay in the "Merlot" apartment at the top of this ancient building, called "La Botte Cachée." The English owners live in town, and were very helpful when we ran up against minor problems during the check-in process; they were also amazingly generous about letting us check out several hours late. The apartment includes a very nice balcony (with a great view of the neighboring gothic bell-tower of St. Vincent's church), a well-equipped kitchen, a comfortable bedroom, a living room with a fold-out sofa-bed, and a rather luxurious shower. Do be forewarned, though, that access to the apartment involves climbing a spiral staircase; thus, it would probably not be suitable for families with small children or for adults with mobility issues. The "Bastide" area of Carcassonne is definitely a great place to spend some time. It is full of wonderful, moderately priced restaurants, and the locals are charming and friendly. It's not far from the better-known "Cité" (citadel), but we would recommend taking a taxi to get there, rather than walking.

A safe and clean place to stay in Carcassonne

The apartment was as advertised. The unit was on the top floor, The stairs are steep but what we expected for an old property. The interior was clean and a bottle of wine welcomed us. The bed was comfortable although a queen which is a little small for us but we made do. The bathroom was okay as well. We did have an issue with hot water but there was a booster for the water heater. The walk to the walled city was about 20 minutes, Driving the streets are very narrow and we did find public pay parking. It was a bit confusing about how long we could leave the car there but it worked out for us because we were there for the weekend. Plenty of places to eat, a main square within an easy walk along with a supermarket.We would recommend the property

Lovely apartment

Our first time in Carcassone. Merlot is centrally located less than 10 mins from the station and Place Carnot (main square with lots of bars/restaurants/shops), the apartment had everything we needed, was very clean and the small outside seating area was lovely. Would definitely recommend this apartment. Thank you Richard and Helen.

Loved the apartment. Clean, roomy, attractive, comfortable, everything worked. Terrace was excellent. Everything for an extended stay. Great quiet location, minutes from sites and eateries. Gut ausgestattet. Vorsicht: die Wohnung "Merlot" im 2. OG ist nur über eine sehr steile und schmale Treppe zu erreichen; wir hatten deswegen etwas Probleme die Koffer hochzubringen.

A lovely week in Carcassonne

Richard and Helen's place is a well appointed apartment with everything we needed for our stay. We ate out a couple of times but also made good use of the kitchen to prepare our own meals. Richard was always very responsive with answers to any questions that we had. Parking in the area sadly doesn't seem to be free anymore but we found the local underground car parks will sell a week long ticket for 20Euros which was very reasonable.

Cozy home and wonderful terrace

We had a wonderful stay in Carcassonne. The flat is cozy and well equipped and welcoming, placed in a small building dating back to the 16th century, but fully refurbished. Everything is at walking distance from this flat (station, main place of the Bastide with its bars and restaurants, the museum and small cathedral) and also the medieval Cité. We slept well with the windows closed because the neighborhood can become somewhat noisy during early night. A highlight is the balcony suitable for breakfast as well as for enjoying a glass of wine towards the end of the day. Parking spaces (not expensive) and bus stops (e.g. local bus line to the airport) are close by.

Parking situation

We spent a very nice time in the house. The description is accurate and the place is very convenient. But it is worth mentioning for people arriving with a car, that all legal parking places close to the house have to be paid for. On top of that, it is not possible to pay for more than 5 hours at once, but re-payment is allowed. The parking fees are very reasonable.

After holidaying in the area for many years, we decided that the laid back French way of life was definitely for us. We came across the property a few years ago. It was in a terrible, run-down state and we have worked hard to lovingly restore this property to its former glory. We hope our guests enjoy the area and that they appreciate the hard work we have put in to restore this charming 16th Century house and retaining most of the original features.

Why they chose this property

We loved the fact that the property was right in the heart of Carcassonne, with all the amazing shops, restaurants and cafes on our doorstep.
We love spending weekends down on the Mediterranean which is just 45 minutes away.
There are many lovely villages to explore nearby, especially the famous book village, Montolieu and Saissac with its amazing Chateau.

What makes this property unique

We spent a lot of time making sure that the property retained its original features but also had all modern facilities.
The lovely terrace is perfect to enjoy a glass of wine or simply enjoy the views of St.Vincent Cathedral. It is very rare to get outdoor space in the heart of Carcassonne and that is one of the reasons that we were attracted to this property.
La Cite is just a 15 minute walk away, and there are so many restaurants and shops to explore nearby. Place Carnot is particularly nice to sit and enjoy a drink and watch the locals going about their business.
