The slate mines are a UNESCO world heritage site, and tourists may take underground expeditions to experience old-fashioned mining. The Ffestiniog mountain railway spans 13 kilometres across Snowdonia to Porthmadog. Portmeirion, famed for its architecture and the film site of The Prisoner, is nearby, as are child-friendly beaches.
