Location:
The third-largest of the Greek islands, ever-popular Rhodes is popular with good reason. With countless beautiful beaches, quaint villages and idyllic countryside, there’s so much to discover both in and beyond its enchanting, eponymous capital.
The city of Rhodes is known for its impressive Old Town. One of the largest and best-preserved medieval towns in all of Europe, it offers an appealing blend of old and new. The Palace of the Grand Masters, a mighty former fortress and citadel that forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the big draws. While only part of this vast palace is open to visitors, it’s an impressive sight. The palace also hosts various events, exhibitions and performances, so it’s worth checking what may be going on when you’re there.
You can uncover the history of Rhodes at the Archaeological Museum, or for a more contemporary take, try The Museum of Modern Greek Art. Landmarks such as Evangelismós Cathedral and the Rhodes Acropolis can also be found in town, along with churches, mosques and many more architecturally noteworthy buildings.
Other historic sights around the island include the Lindos Acropolis. The ancient ruins are situated on the clifftop at Lindos, and also incorporate a medieval castle. Rhodes town lays claim to the world’s first landscaped park, Rodino, which provides a calm alternative to the bustling streets of the Old Town and around the port.
If you’re looking for some nightlife, Rhodes town, nearby Ixia and Lindos offer a good range of clubs and bars. In the capital, Orfanidou Street is known to some as ‘Bar Street’, while it’s a little more sophisticated in the luxurious rooftop restaurants overlooking the Lindos Acropolis. Even areas less developed for tourism will usually have a few beach bars – ideal for a quiet drink in a wonderful setting.
South of Rhodes, the resort of Faliraki is good for family attractions. There’s a well-organised, if often very busy, beach, as well as a water-park and go-karting track. About 30 minutes’ drive west, the Valley of the Butterflies offers unforgettable adventures amongst nature. The Epta Piges, or Seven Springs, are another magnificent sight – make your way to the lake via a tunnel, or have a picnic in the woods.
There are numerous walking and cycling routes you can follow to discover more of the island’s natural beauty, or how about taking a catamaran cruise or boat trip and seeing it from the water? Sporting activities are easy to find too, with horse-riding, tennis, golf, sailing and bungee jumping if you fancy it. Rhodes is also full of fantastic spots for scuba-diving and offers opportunities from beginner level upwards.
