Region: Northumberland is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife.
Town: Alnwick Castle, the seat of the Duke of Northumberland, towers over the picturesque and ancient market town of Alnwick. The Castle Gardens, which opened to the public in 2002, are a sight to behold for gardeners of all skill levels, since they contain Europe's largest cascading water feature, a spectacular (and massive) treehouse, a charming rose garden, and a gorgeous, walled ornamental garden. Harry Potter fans will recognise the castle as Hogwarts, the fictional school featured in the series. Since the days of the London to Edinburgh stage coach, the town's small alleys have changed little, and the Market Place, with its stone cross, remains the focal point of the community and the best location for the weekly Saturday market. There is lots to see and do in the area around Alnwick, including miles of golden sand beaches, dozens of castles, and boat journeys to the world-famous Farne Islands. All in all, it's a great base from which to discover Northumberland and its breathtaking Heritage Coast.
