About the host
Hosted by Retreat Manager
Situated on the edge of the New Forest, 4.5 miles from Christchurch and 3 miles from the beaches at Highcliff The Retreat, on the East Close Estate, has had many incarnations: In May 1719 a wealthy apothecary and former Mayor of Salisbury purchased East Close Farm- the property was part of the North Hinton estate held by Christchurch priory until its dissolution in 1539. He left the estate to his son who was later the immediate predecessor of Jane Austen’s father as Rector of Deanne Hampshire.
George William Tapps 2nd Baronet, a member of parliament, bought the property in 1835. His eldest son George Tapps Gervis inherited the Estate as well as Hiton Admiral and in 1876 he assumed the name of Meyrick. East Close remains within Meyrick Estates.
