About this property

Red Lion Cottage - Blockley

A stone's throw from the centre of Blockley, grade II listed Red Lion Cottage sits above the quiet high street. Its golden Cotswold stone exterior welcomes you in to relax and unwind in this unspoilt part of the country.

You step into the open-plan living/dining room and find yourselves instantly easing into the holiday spirit. Finished with a country cottage style you can put your feet up in front of the woodburner which sits in an impressive stone inglenook. The dining area here is perfect for family meals after a busy day out and about. At the rear of the cottage the kitchen is a surprise with its double-height ceiling and open stone walls adding character to this historic building. With two comfortable double bedrooms and two bathrooms, one of which has a freestanding slipper bath, this cottage is a wonderfully romantic retreat for couples.

From the kitchen you can take drinks out onto the hidden terrace. This secluded spot catches the sun making it a lovely place to enjoy an evening chat or a morning cup of coffee. With the charms of Blockley on your doorstep you don't need to venture too far. Walking trails lead you out into the countryside, you can visit the local pubs or just spend time together at Red Lion Cottage. Quiet and cosy stay

Very good starting point to the Cotswolds. You can also do beautiful walkings from the doorstep. Blockley is a beautiful village.

Lovely cottage in a gorgeous village

Our second visit to Red Lion Cottage was as good as the first, nearly 10 years ago. It is very well equipped, charmingly decorated and very comfortable. We did find it harder to park this time but always managed to find a space. Blockley is a gorgeous village, extremely quiet and set in beautiful countryside. The village shop and cafe are excellent.

Magical stay over Christmas

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Red Lion Cottage. Lovely cottage in a quaint Cotswold village. A warning that it is not really suitable for those who struggle with stairs as the bedrooms are upstairs with a narrow winding staircase although there are well placed handles to assist. The second bedroom is not as large as the main bedroom and the one side of the double bed is against the wall. The bath is upstairs although the shower is downstairs. We loved our stay snd would certainly do it again

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us on your recent stay at Red Lion Cottage. We’re very glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay. With your comments regarding the stairs, these can be viewed on the 3D tour on our website. Also under the points of note section we say "The stairs to the first floor have two grabrails and no handrail therefore this property may not be suitable for those with limited mobility". The sizes of the bedrooms are also shown on the floorplans, and you can view these along with the bathrooms, on the 3D tour. We hope to see you in the Cotswolds again soon.

Our first cottage stay

We always stay at hotels (usually 5*) but we decided to try a cottage for part of our holiday. Red Lion Cottage in Blockley was very sweet and better than expected. It was clean and had most everything we needed. I will look for a cottage with a washer and dryer next time but for 4 nights, this was perfect. Blockley was a great little village with a lot of charm. Bolthole was good and professional.

Relaxing week in the Cotswolds.

Red Lion Cottage is in a great little village and very convenient as a base for touring the Cotswolds. Cottage is well equipped and clean. Bed was comfortable and shower was good pressure and WiFi was working well. Only gripe is the miniature ironing board, why do so many rentals have this instead of a full size proper board? However that’s only a minor issue, otherwise the cottage is well suited for a holiday break. Locals were very friendly and helpful. Would certainly return again.

Great village and good value for money in Blockley

Nicely situated cottage in the centre of Blockley - the perfect village if you want to be away from the crowds. Cottage was comfortable and had most amenities we needed. We arrived in the early evening in winter (pitch black), however, so the cottage was quite difficult to find as no lights were turned on for us to read the name outside (I’d recommend Bolthole retreats doing this for your guests in future). Housekeeper’s number was provided but didn’t answer or call us back to help find it. Outside of that small detail, it was a good stay.

Lovely stay

Lovely stay, a great location and a clean warm , welcoming house . A small point, the back door did not open to access the bin and there were no clear instructions for discarding rubbish, which I think could be made clearer for future guests . Thank you

Great Weekend STay

Great Weekend stay in this lovely cottage in a great village. No issues at all. I will (like others) mention that the tv did not work however we do not go away to watch tv. There's plenty of street parking even if a bit tight in places however the road is a dead end so no issues with through traffic.

Disappointing

Cottage was convenient for our needs. Misrepresented in listing: main bedroom bed is a DOUBLE when advertised as a king sized bed. Poor bedlinen and towels. Would have expected more at the charge rate. Disappointing.

Short Break in the Cotswolds

The Cottage is in a quintessential village, perhaps more remembered for being the location of the filming of Father Brown, than it’s history as one of the many mill villages. Streets are very narrow, parking is difficult to find and there are no street numbers! The Red Lion Cottage is a wonderfully converted building that makes the best use of the space. The beds are comfortable and the kitchen fully stocked. It would have been nice to have a Nespresso machine, something other Bolthole Retreat locations have. There are many amazing country walks directly from the Village, which is also very central for touring other unique Cotswolds villages. The local pub is well run by Sri Lankans serving British and ethnic dishes. There is also a very good Village Hub coffee shop serving coffee and food all day.

Nice cottage

Lovely village but parking impossible! Two pubs neither food for food but nearest nice for drink. Beds ok but a bit soft, biggest not a king size as advertised, second bedroom tiny no proper hanging space. Cottage nicely furnished but very difficult stairs with grab rails and poor outside space, badly maintained with very steep stairs up to it. Not value for money as too many things were a problem or missing , e.g. half size kettle, one cup caffe tier, mini freezer compartment iced up . Would not recommend booking with Bolthole Retreats as very unhelpful.
Response from VrboOwner on 27 June 2024
Thank you for taking the time to write a review on your recent stay at Red Lion Cottage and are disappointed to read your feedback. We advised you that we were able to provide any documentation you needed to supply for your travel insurance if you were not able to make it, however, you had decided to stay at the cottage. The listing online clearly lists the facilities inside the property, and we also provide a 3D tour which visibly shows the layout, staircase and bedroom furniture. We have also shared your feedback with the housekeeper regarding the missing items who has taken this onboard and it will be looked into.
