Why Mark & Sharon Jenkins chose Caldas de Monchique
Having never visited Portugal before we stayed at the Stonehouse to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary and fell in love with the house, location, and area. As fate had it, it turned out that the property was for sale, so on a whim we decided it was to good a chance too miss and bought it! The Stonehouse offers seclusion and privacy yet is within close proximity to the quaint market town of Monchique that has all the amenities one requires when on holiday - cafes, restaurants, fruit/veg market, bank, chemist, butchers, souvenir shops and supermarket. The view over the 'valley' towards Portimão and the south coast, just made us want to own this best of both worlds, seclusion but without being isolated. It is an ideal base to explore both the southern & western area of the Algarve.

Quiet and peaceful
The property was exactly as described so there were no unexpected surprises.
The property was in quiet peaceful location on a hillside with great views over the countryside all the way to the coast.
The kitchen was well appointed with plenty of utensils.
The pool was not large but was ideal and very welcome to cool off in during the day.
Even the the house seemed remote the village of Monichique was only 10 minutes drive where there is a supermarket which has everything you need for you stay. There are restaurants and here too.
Communications withe Mark and Sharon were fast and responsive.
Jeff, thank you for your informative review. You have been very thoughtful for further guests.
Lovely to know that you enjoyed the peaceful & scenic location of our house.
Thank you for you kind comment about our responses, we always try our best to answer any questions fully and as quick as possible.
Best wishes to you both, kind regards, Sharon & Mark
What a fantastic place to get away from everyday life & enjoy the peace & beautiful setting that the Stonehouse offers. Very well equipped with everything you need & spotlessly clean. Ana Paula who lives locally takes great pride in the upkeep of both interior & outside on the patio terrace. The directions we received from Mark & Sharon were easily followed & accurate. Definitely would like to revisit with a huge thank you to Mark &Sharon & of course to the lovely Ana Paula who is fantastic
Very poorly equipped and uncomfortable
Bed consisted of hard mattress on a board. No proper sleep for two weeks. Incomplete mosquito nets. Worn out cooker. Broken and cheap terrace equipment. Broken kettle.the list goes on. Dangerous stairs. Not suitable for discerning renters. Not recommended
We are sorry to hear that your stay at the Stonehouse was not to your expectations. We have let the property now for several years, through Thomson’s and Homeaway with the vast majority enjoying a relaxing stay.
Everyone's expectations of a holiday home are different, and we would like to address your comments. Yes, the bed is firm, but this is our house and is to our liking, it is difficult to please everyone. The boards are part of the structure along with the supporting posts beneath. The Stonehouse is an old farmhouse, not a modern villa, to have screens at every window would not be in keeping with the property, however there are Mosquito Screens to every bedroom window. Insect spray is readily available from the local supermarket for less than a Euro should there have been a problem. We agree the oven was old but was in good working order at the time of your arrival. It was unfortunate that the new oven and washing machine had not arrived in time for your stay.
The kettle was replaced immediately as soon as it was reported.
Not sure what your comment “Poorly Equipped” is eluding too as there is more than enough crockery, cutlery, cookware, chairs, glasses, bedding and towels for our guests. This is a self-catering accommodation.
The patio furniture is typical of what is available in Portugal and is robust enough to take the rigours of the very hot weather and everyday use.
On not one occasion were you without a working kettle or table that was unable to perform is function. Over the years with Thomson’s, Homeaway and the Local Council we have undergone numerous health and safety inspections, NOT ONCE have the stairs been deemed to be dangerous. They are clearly defined with luminous markings with safety in mind. We do welcome comments, good or bad to enable us to rectify any problems. We would not normally make further comment, just take them on board and deal with them as soon as possible, but we feel there is more to your comments than constructive criticism from the private message you had sent prior to you posting your review, and we quote “Your response to this private message will influence what I say in these reviews” We will leave others to determine what these motives were. It is also disappointing to hear your attitude to our house keeper was not what we would have expected from someone visiting another's country, they do all they can to help our guests enjoy their stay and sort any problems, which is exactly what they did.
Lovely quiet getaway
This is a great little house for a getaway. It is a short drive from the town of Monchique and the views from the terrace are truly gorgeous. Pool was small but is all you need really, unless you want to start swimming lengths! The lounge was comfy and kitchen perfectly adequate. Kept in a lovely condition. Main bedroom is downstairs next to the bathroom and with plenty of hanging space and drawers. Only criticism would be the bed is very hard. If you are wanting nightlife, bars etc then this isn't the place for you but if you want peace and quiet, great views and a real sense of this part of Portugal then this is a top choice. Easy drive from Faro Airport makes life easy as well. highly recommended and hope to return again.
Thank you John for your kind review & reccommation.
You have covered all aspects of the Stonehouse, it's location, setting & amenities.
So happy to know that you found them all to your satisfaction.
We can't seem to win with the mattress! It comes down to personal preference which unfortunately won't suit all!
We look forward to hearing from you should you return the the Serra de Monchique.
Kind regards & best wishes
Sharon & Mark
Peaceful place with spectacular views, away from the crowds
The house is spacious and nicely furnished with a wonderful outside patio and private pool.
There are lots of interesting places to visit nearby and for those who like to walk a good choice of trails, both in the hills and on the nearby coast. Provisions for self catering can be found in Monchique or in some of the towns close by. Weather was very warm for our stay, and the greenery and shade around the house kept it comfortable, and cool enough for sleeping .
Thank you Penny for your review, It's always good to have feedback post stay.
Glad to hear that you enjoyed so many of the Stonehouse attributes.
Happy travelling, kind regards
Mark & Sharon
The Stonehouse is ideally situated to visit the sandy beaches of the south coast or the more rugged secluded coastline of the west coast. The market town of Monchique is just a 10 minute drive, which has stunning views from both the peaks of Fóia (the highest peak in the Algarve) & Picota. Caldas de Monchique (spa resort) Silves (castle) Portimão (19km), Lagos (zoo), Cape St Vincent - the most westerly point of Europe, Albufeira (zoo marine - where you can swim with the dolphins, during the summer season) & Pera - site of the international sand sculptures all within easy reach. A perfect location to visit most of the Algarve region.
