About this property

Afton Station Cottage -Beautifully Renovated Blue Ridge Scenic Historic Setting

Our house is nestled on the eastern slope of Afton Mountain just below Rockfish Gap in the northern tip of Historic Nelson County on the “Sunrise Side of the Blue Ridge” It’s just 3-minutes away from where the Blue Ridge Parkway meets the Skyline Drive and 4-minutes to the southern gatehouse of the Shenandoah National Park. Hiking, skiing, golf, biking, and sightseeing; the area calls to the outdoor enthusiast.
If history is your thing you're fortunate that we have that too! But if you are the type that prefers a quiet spot with a good book that's possible too; the house has two porches and outside of the occasional train rumbling past it's pretty quiet. There are music and performance venues in the nearby communities of Crozet, Waynesboro, Charlottesville, and Staunton. In recent years Nelson County has enjoyed a renaissance of sorts in the age-old crafts of brewing, distilling, and viticulture; Nelson County's popular Brew Ridge Trail begins just three miles down the road where you can tour numerous breweries, cideries, vineyards, and a distillery or two.
One section of our property was once the site of the freight station for the original Blue Ridge Railway which sits alongside the recently renovated Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge Trail. This Rails-To-Trails addition will include Crozet’s 4300-foot-long tunnel dug 500 feet below Afton Mountain during the 1850s. It was one of the longest tunnels ever built in its day and the first tunnel ever dug simultaneously from both sides. The tunnel/trail opened to visitors in the fall of 2020 to rave reviews.
The house (our first home) is a simple wood-framed 2-story cottage with about 1200 sq feet of living space. We don’t know how old it is but 25 years ago we met a woman who told us she was born in the house in 1911; we don't think it's much older than that. Much of the house has been modernized and renovated. The upstairs bedrooms are small by modern standards and have sloped ceilings and the stairway was built for a time when people were shorter so you folks over 6’2 should watch your noggins. There are two bedrooms upstairs; one with a queen and the second bedroom has two twin beds. There is a modern bathroom with a shower and a small office nook.
On the first floor, you will find a well-equipped kitchen, dining, and living area in an open and well-lit floor plan. The original living room was converted to a first-floor bedroom with a king bed in 2022.
Just two steps from the new primary bedroom and off the family room you will find a small full bath with a tub/shower.
The cozy open front porch faces east onto a small shaded front lawn. There are views to the east and south that open up in the winter. It is the best place to escape the heat of the day or to enjoy early morning coffee.
The fully enclosed back porch was fully insulated in 2022 to make it more comfortable. It is not heated or air-conditioned as of yet since we want to see how it responds to the insulation.
The trailhead for the Blue Ridge Tunnel, a major local attraction, adjoins our property at one corner. The eastern access trail is a nearly level hard-pack surface 1/2 mile to the tunnel entrance. The tunnel, which opened for train traffic in 1858, is 4300 feet long and was dug simultaneously from east and west.

We’re located just 25 miles west of Charlottesville, UVA, and Monticello, 4 minutes from I-64 exit 99 or 10 minutes from I-64 exit 107. Waynesboro is 10 minutes to the west. It’s just a 15-minute walk to the Appalachian Trail. Wintergreen's Valley section, Stoney Creek is a 15-minute drive down the Rockfish Valley. The skiing area on the mountain is another 15 minutes beyond that or, if weather permits during non-freezing temperatures, you can shave some time by traveling the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway route to the mountain section. Enjoy everything the Blue Ridge Mountains have to offer.
The more information you provide in the booking inquiry the better we will be able to serve you.

Such a wonderful stay. So close to everything we wanted to do, but so set apart and quiet. Beautiful views from the windows. Comfy couch and bed (which is not always the case when getting a rental). We were able to walk to two of the trails we wanted to visit. The owners were very helpful with information about the house and area, but not overly so. Perfect home away from home for a peaceful anniversary. One of the nicest stays we have had so far.

Overall we recommend this cottage for its location near points of interest to us: Blue Ridge Tunnel Trail, Chiles Orchard, Blue Mountain Brewery, and our favorite, King Family Vineyard/Roseland Polo. The cottage was clean, comfortable, well stocked with all the necessities, and pet friendly. Tom and Jackie are easy to communicate with; very responsive. They’ve done a great job updating an over 100 year old home. Our dog, Stella enjoyed the house and our adventures. Sadly, the weather kept the polo club from playing but we loved the scenery, people, and the wine. Hoping to come back next polo season.

Beautiful Home!

This is a beautiful property and it’s very clear lots of thought, detail, and effort have gone into this rental home. Check-in was a breeze and the property managers were kind, helpful, and available if necessary. I truly enjoyed my stay as it was very relaxing. A fantastic place in a beautiful setting

Tom & Jackie’s cottage has everything anyone could need while away from home! The Afton Cottage is exceptionally clean, modern and well-equipped. We were in town for our daughter’s wedding and it was the perfect place to relax in between the festivities. The hosts were very responsive and accomodating! We will definitely be back again.

Adorable Cottage

A long weekend stay - we enjoyed the Afton Station Cottage!! Modern kitchen and bathrooms, comfortable beds, good seating in family room, back porch and front porch. One member of the party commented that she could stay here for a week - cook good food, hike, and read. Plan to hike the Blue Ridge Tunnel during your stay. Chooo chooo - you may experience an unexpected awakening by the train!!!

Adorable cottage & fantastic location

My husband and I had a wonderful Labor Day weekend staying at the cottage! The house was updated while still feeling charming and cozy. It was very clean and had everything we needed. We couldn’t have asked for better weather and enjoyed sitting outside every morning and evening. The location is perfect and we enjoyed hiking on the Blue Ridge Parkway and Shenandoah National Park. We also spent most of one morning in Staunton at the farmers market and some local farms- it’s a very short drive away. We plan on returning soon!

Cozy Cottage

We loved our stay here at this cozy cottage in Afton. It's in a quiet neighborhood with occasional train passing by. Great place to relax and enjoy your beautiful surroundings. Waynesboro is close by with all your shopping needs. Attractions are a short day trip away. The cottage has everything you'll need to make your stay comfortable. We loved the inside atmosphere and decor. The beds were comfortable and clean. The bathrooms and kitchen were clean, functional, and beautiful. Everything is labeled and easy to find/use. One of the best places we have stayed at from VRBO.

Afton Cottage

The cottage is tucked away in the mountain but is right by Rt 6 near Rt 250. We came with our adult children for some relaxation. The cottage was very well equipped and we loved the layout. I spent most mornings on the screened porch enjoying my coffee and the bird song. We had planned to do some hiking, since its near the Blue Ridge Tunnel and the Shenandoah Park but temperatures were in the 90s. We did hike down to the tunnel once. We've already booked for April 2025 so we can hopefully hike in cooler weather. Doesn't hurt that Veritas winery is 10 minutes down the road. There are other wineries and breweries in the area and we alternated visiting them in the afternoon and playing games in the evening.

Perfect mountain cottage!

We so enjoyed our stay at this adorable cottage! It has the perfect balance of modern conveniences without losing the charm of its age and history. A beautiful modern, well stocked kitchen with top of the line appliances, updated bathrooms, and comfortable beds provide the basics for daily living. But, the personality of a vintage cottage still remains. It felt so homey and we loved relaxing in the enclosed porch soaking in the beauty of the mountains. We were there for the Celebration of Life for a family member, and the coziness of the cottage provided each of us the comfort and opportunity to quietly reflect. Tom and Jackie were the perfect hosts. They provided all the information we needed for our stay and were always timely in answering our questions. If we could give 10 stars we would! Thank you, Tom and Jackie.

Afton cottage rocks!

The cottage was great. My wife and I were looking for a getaway with the dogs to do some hiking and biking in and around Shenandoah national Park and the blue ridge parkway. The cottage is awesomely sitiuated near the entrances of both. The leaves we're just changing colors making the parks beautiful. We hiked up a few mountains, saw some waterfalls, wildlife and put a few miles on the Appalachian trail without having to be too far from the cottage. We were able to visit many of the local wineries, breweries, cideries and distilleries, all within short a distance. From go out to eat in Staunton or Charlottesville to visiting Monticello, the Shenandoah valley area was a great time. The cottage had everything we needed to make sure our stay was memorable. Beautiful kitchen and bathrooms, small bar area and a realaxing three season room, made our stay enjoyable. The only caveat to some would be the train that passes nearby, but I like trains so it wasn't much of a bother. The hosts we're very easy to communicate with, which always makes a stay more relaxing when you know if something were to go wrong , the owners are only but an email or phone call away. It was a great relaxing trip to the Afton Cottage. Would stay again.

The cottage was perfect. Centrally located, very clean and the experience was seamless. The cottage was decorated nicely with a scenic view and the front porch was so nice to sit and watch the sun rise. Owner hospitality was very thoughtful complete with labels throughout the house, and stocked with everything we needed. We had a wonderful time and the short walking distance to the historic tunnel was something we will never forget. Just a wonderful trip thanks to our stay at Afton. We all want to come back next year.

Cozy & Convenient

First, the house was well equipped and very nicely appointed. It is a very comfortable house to kick back in. Communication from the owners was exceptionally clear and they went out of their way to answer question I had.Second, location is great. Its on the road to Blue Ridge tunnel and it's a quick hike to the entrance. It's also a stone's throw from 151 and all its vineyards and breweries. Highly recommend....

Great stay in quiet cottage close to sites

Family of five with kids on spring break trip. We all had plenty of space to spread out and we loved being able to walk down to the tunnel trail every day. Super close to Monticello, Skyline Drive, Charlottesville, Staunton and local sites. Cottage was clean and super well stocked, we appreciated not needing to go to a local grocery store for incidentals. Highly recommend and great communication with property owners.

Spring is better

This is our second stay at Afton Cottage. Our first was in July. The cottage was great but the weather was too hot to be outside for long. Spring was perfect. We had sun most of our stay and spent mornings with a cup of coffee on the porch before planning which winery or brewery we would visit in the afternoon. The cottage is quiet and has just the right number of nooks for us to read in the evening.

We moved to Nelson County from the Virgin Islands over 40 years ago and "got hitched" at the courthouse. A few years later we pulled up stakes and moved south to FL for a few then West to CA before returning to Nelson and buying this house as we started our family. We outgrew the house 7 years later and moved 8 miles across the ridge to nearby Waynesboro keeping this house and the lower cottage as long-term rentals.
The last long-term tenants moved out of the upper house in July of 2016 so we decided to do a "few things". We finished up in September 2017. We're very happy with the results and our guests have since agreed.
In 2021 we sold our Waynesboro house at the same time our lower house tenants moved into their own home nearby. Once again we were forced to do a "few things". And moved into the lower house in early 2022 and split our time between this 2nd cottage and our small RV enjoying travels about the country and sometimes volunteering as hosts in our National Parks.
Our style of hosting is to assist only if needed we don't hover, we will visit if you wish but always take our cues from our guests.
