About this property
Windy Cottage in Coldstream, Scottish Borders - sleeping 4 guests in 2 bedrooms
Tucked away on a side street in the small market town of Coldstream, Windy Cottage promises all the relaxation of a rural escape with the benefit of several cafés, pubs and historic sites on its doorstep. Located on the northern bank of the River Tweed, this historic town is famed for originating the Coldstream Guards – the oldest regiment in the British Army. Today, it’s a peaceful spot for a riverside retreat and enjoys one of the finest salmon fishing rivers in the country. Northumberland lies just over the water, so visitors here couldn’t be better placed to explore both the rivers and ruined abbeys of the Scottish Borders and the dramatic coastline and remote hills of the North of England.
Enter the cottage through the front door and step into the inner hall, where you’ll spot a hanging rail and under-stair storage space as well as a ground-floor shower room and utility room on the right. The kitchen lies through a door to the left. With spacious wooden countertops and a ceramic hob, it’s well-equipped for preparing meals to be enjoyed together at the dining table, which you’ll find set beside the folding doors in the open-plan living space. Nearby, a blue sofa and two cosy armchairs are gathered around a colourful patterned rug and coffee table. Natural light fills the room through the doors which lead out to the garden, making it the perfect place to pause and rest on a quiet afternoon.
The central staircase in the inner hall leads up to the bedrooms on the first floor. With blush-pink walls, gently sloping eaves and a plush king size bed, the master bedroom promises a restful night’s sleep. An ensuite bathroom is situated next door and features a combined bath and shower. The second bedroom is equally bright and inviting, with sky-blue walls, patterned textiles and another king size bed.
Outside, the enclosed rear garden is a true suntrap and will allow you to make the most of warmer days. A combination of patio, gravel and raised planters, it also features a raised upper terrace and is kitted out with outdoor furniture throughout the spring and summer. A gate leads to the secure enclosed parking area which is accessed via an electronic key fob and shared with Wall Cottage, which sits under the same ownership.
In addition to exploring the town and strolling along the banks of the Tweed, there’s also plenty to keep you occupied nearby. The Hirsel, a beautiful stately home set within a 500-acre park with lake and river trails, sits on the edge of town. Ideal for a long dog-walk, it boasts spectacular rhododendrons, an azalea wood and swathes of daffodils in the spring. For more days out, why not head west and discover the Stichill Linn waterfall or the Borders’ abbeys – such as the magnificent ruins of Dryburgh Abbey, the burial place of Sir Walter Scott – or cross the causeway to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne which is just half an hour away.
