About this property
Cosy stone cottage on the shores of Sneem River
Pier Cottage sits right on the edge of the Sneem River, only 300 metres from the village. Built in the 19th century for the Harbour Master, it still carries a sense of its history. The moment you step inside, it feels well cared for and welcoming. The owners have maintained it with real thought, giving it a natural, effortless homeliness.
The open-plan living space includes a wood-burning stove, TV, two sofas and a couple of easy chairs. The kitchen is bright, compact and well stocked, and the dining table with benches works well for easy, informal meals. Half doors at the front and back offer lovely views across the river and garden.
The cottage sleeps up to five people, and dogs are accepted at no extra cost.
There are three bedrooms in total. Downstairs is a small single room beside a neat bathroom with a shower, toilet and basin. Upstairs there is one double room and a twin with two single beds. The main bathroom is also upstairs and has a bath with a shower over it. Bed linen and towels are supplied, and every bed has soft feather duvets and throws. Small touches throughout add to the warm, comfortable feel.
The Setting
Pier Cottage is ideal for anyone who enjoys wildlife and quiet, natural surroundings. You may spot otters, kingfishers, herons, swans and, if you’re fortunate, the pair of sea eagles that nest nearby.
The cottage stands on an acre and a half of woodland and has a garden patio with wooden outdoor seating. Despite its peaceful, tucked-away setting, it is only a short stroll to Sneem, often regarded as one of the prettiest villages on the Wild Atlantic Way, with its colourful houses and two village greens.
Sneem has three pubs, often with live music, and five restaurants. The nearby Sneem Hotel offers seaweed baths (booked and paid for directly). In the village you’re welcome to use the tennis court and mini golf. Local river walks and a sculpture trail start close by, and some of Kerry’s finest beaches, golf courses and well-known gardens are a short drive away. Kenmare, with its excellent restaurants and Wednesday market, is around twenty minutes by car.
Please Note
• There is no tumble dryer.
• The cottage has an under-counter fridge with ice box but no separate freezer.
• Families are welcome, but the cottage is not suitable for young children because the river is immediately beside the front door, making supervision difficult.
