Region: With many quaint, seaside and market towns, historic sites and miles of glorious coastline to explore, Sussex has it all for a great holiday destination.
Town: Newick is a medium-sized, pretty village situated in the heart of Sussex, on the A272 in the Low Weald area of East Sussex, almost mid-way between the busy towns of Haywards Heath and Uckfield. At the centre of the village is the village green, which is surrounded by local shops including a chemist, grocery store with post office and a baker’s serving freshly baked bread, delicious pies cakes and sandwiches. Newick has three pubs, all serving meals and real ales. The Crown can even boast a Certificate of Excellence, so is well worth a visit when dining out. Alternatively, why not try the Newick Tandoori, a family-run restaurant that serves Indian and Bangladeshi food? The restaurant is open seven days a week and offers a takeaway service, so whether you wish to dine in style or enjoy a delicious Indian takeaway meal whilst watching TV, the choice is yours. For a village, Newick has a bustling community with over 30 different societies and clubs, so little wonder that there’s an amateur theatre group who present regular plays at the village hall. But the real highlight of the calendar year is Newick Bonfire Night. Held at the end of October, the roads through the village are closed to traffic and starting with a children’s pageant, residents walk along the lanes dressed in costume and carrying torches towards the village green, where an enormous bonfire sits. Around the village green there are stalls serving hot food and drinks while music plays. This is one of the many bonfire events held all over Sussex between the months of September and November, with Newick holding one of the prime positions, and this is not a bonfire event just for the younger visitors, this is a festival for all ages and abilities and with so much happening, this is truly an evening to remember. Newick is a lovely Sussex village with a huge welcome.
