The Neighborhood:

Ano Mera sits almost exactly at the center of Mykonos, roughly 8 kilometers inland from Chora, and it occupies a different register from the island's famous coastal scene entirely. The landscape here is dry Cycladic countryside — rolling low hills, scattered stone walls, whitewashed houses, and the occasional windmill silhouetted against the sky. It is quiet in a way that is genuinely restorative, and it attracts a different kind of visitor: people who want Mykonos's location and access to its beaches without the noise and density of the waterfront. The village's central square, pedestrianized since 2001 and anchored by the impressive 16th-century Panagia Tourliani Monastery, is a five-minute walk from the villa. Around it you find traditional tavernas serving Mykonian grilled meats and local mezedes, pastry shops with homemade sweets, and cafés where a coffee can last as long as you like.

The beaches are the main event, and from Ano Mera you are exceptionally well-placed to reach several of Mykonos's best. Agia Anna is approximately 3 km away — a small, sandy, relatively sheltered cove near a traditional fishing port, with sunbeds, umbrellas, and a taverna serving fresh fish. It stays quieter than most, and that is a large part of its appeal. Kalafatis, also about 3 km from the villa, is a wider, sandier bay on the southeastern coast, well known among watersports enthusiasts — windsurfing, kitesurfing, diving, and jet skiing are all available there, and the beach has good facilities

including bars and restaurants. Kalo Livadi, roughly 2–3 km away, is one of the longest sandy beaches on the island, calm and well-organized, with shallow clear water that suits families particularly well. Sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars, and tavernas line the shore. Further on, Elia — about 4.5 km from Ano Mera — is Mykonos's longest sandy beach, partly organized and partly free, known for its broad expanse and good swimming. From most of these southeastern beaches on a clear day, the outlines of Naxos and Paros are visible on the horizon. Ftelia, approximately 7 km north of the village, is a notably different experience — a long, exposed northern beach popular with windsurfers for the Meltemi winds that sweep across it in summer, wilder and less organized than the southern options.

The landscape around Ano Mera holds a few rewarding day-trip possibilities. The Paleokastro Monastery, about 1 km southeast of the village center, sits on a hill above the village and dates to the 12th century, with the remains of a Byzantine castle and ancient geometric-era tombs in the surrounding area — the views from the hill are worth the short walk alone. The Panagia Tourliani Monastery in the village square is one of the most important religious monuments on the island, founded in 1542, with a striking marble fountain, an ornate bell tower, and a fine collection of Byzantine icons painted by a Cretan master. Two traditional windmills stand on the hill above Ano Mera, a quiet counterpart to the famous Mykonos Town windmills, and worth a short detour for the panoramic view of the island's interior. Mykonos Town (Chora), 8 km away, remains within easy reach for an evening in Little Venice, the famous labyrinthine alleyways, the harbor waterfront, or the wider range of restaurants and bars the capital offers. From the port at Kalafatis, boat trips run to Dragonisi, a small rocky islet just off the eastern coast of Mykonos, known for its sea caves — one large enough to enter by dinghy — and for monk seal sightings.

Day-to-day, Ano Mera is more self-sufficient than it might initially seem. Within the village and its immediate surroundings you find supermarkets, a bakery, and the full range of eating options from a quick coffee to a proper sit-down meal. Local cuisine leans on Mykonian meat dishes — particularly grilled and spit-roasted — along with kopanisti, the island's distinctive spicy aged cheese, served as part of a meze spread. The Vioma Organic Farm, located in the Ano Mera area, offers wine tasting and a hands-on experience of traditional Mykonian farming and winemaking, making for a worthwhile half-day. In summer, the village hosts traditional panigiria — local festivals that run through the night with food, music, and dancing, open to all — a genuinely different side of Mykonos that most visitors who stay only in Chora never see.

An ideal destination for nature lovers and those seeking authentic local experiences all year round.

Getting Around:

The property is conveniently located 8.8km from the airport. You can explore Ano Mera on foot but for the rest of the island renting a car is highly recommended.
