Kingswear is a sleepy village opposite the town of Dartmouth and attracts walkers as it is a starting point along the coastal path, where you can do a circular walk past Kingswear Castle or follow the Dart Valley Trail. This character village with winding streets and brightly coloured houses has spectacular views of the sea in one direction and upriver to Totnes in the other direction. You can walk to Agatha Christie’s estate of Greenway House and Gardens, or take the little ferry at the water’s edge; just ring the bell to attract the skipper. Another great day out is a trip to Coleton Fishacre, visit the house and wander around the garden or go on the Dartmouth steam train and follow the beach then along the River Dart.
Just a few minutes’ walk from the property is the ferry which takes cars and passengers to Dartmoor, where you will find an abundance of shops, restaurants, and cafés. Nearby are miles of moorland, surrounded by myths and legends and made popular by fiction such as ’The Hound of the Baskervilles’.
The sandy beach of Blackpool Sands is popular with families and offers clear blue water surrounded by evergreens and pines. Another stunning beach is Bigbury-on-Sea, which is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is great for windsurfing and kitesurfing. It is also family friendly, with rock pools and wetlands great for nature watching. For surfers, go to Bantham Beach which offers mellow waves for beginners, whilst the mouth of the River Avon is more challenging for experienced surfers.
Your four-legged friends (extra charge) can enjoy the estuary year-round, as well as long walks on the moors (please keep dogs on leads when requested). Dog-friendly beaches include Sugary Cove and Castle Cove in Dartmouth. Most restaurants, shops and pubs are dog-friendly; they may even have doggy biscuits on the bar! Pub within a mile.
