About this property

Quiet Cottage on sandy beach of the Chesapeake Bay

Try'n Rest
In the Historic Northern Neck of Virginia

Try'n Rest. The name says it all, really. This vintage 4 bedroom cottage, with a new family room addition, sits on the shore at the mouth of the Potomac River overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. Try'n Rest has a fully equipped kitchen, central heat and air, 2 full baths and a large screened in porch. It can accommodate up to 8 guests. A panoramic view of the Bay is enjoyed from the living room, porch and front bedrooms.

From the back door, walk 50’ to a large raised deck which overlooks the Bay and the broad white sand beach. Lying around with a good book is enough activity for some, but for those who prefer moving about, there are plenty of outdoor adventures. You can:
- fish off the shore for spot and croaker
- take long walks down the beach
- stick the crab pot in, out past the first sandbar
- enjoy swimming or using our floats
- hunt for treasures on the beach
- play croquet or horseshoes in the large back yard
- Admire the area wildlife (dolphins, skates, foxes, turkeys, deer, bald eagles and osprey, hummingbirds etc)
Public boat launching sites are within a 15 minute drive at the Great Wicomico River and the Little Wicomico River.

Try n Rest has no TV and no Wifi, as we find this to be a place to enjoy the Bay, games, books, and conversation.

You have selected an area not only steeped in early Virginia history, but also with memorable restaurants, such as historic 18th Century Hughlett’s Tavern and waterfront seafood restaurants in Reedville. A fifteen minute drive from Try'n Rest takes you to Reedville (check out the Victorian houses and the Waterman’s Museum); a thirty minute ride reaches Irvington, and White Stone (towns with resort shopping and restaurants). Winery tours are in the area. You will discover Antique stores and souvenir shops all through the area. Public golf courses are available at Tides Inn Resort and in the town of Callao. Finally, from Reedville, you can board a Tangier Island or Wicomico River Cruise.

Couples tell us this quiet and beautiful spot is a perfect place for a romantic getaway or to celebrate an anniversary.

This is a great location for kids! The wide, sandy, safe beach leads to water with soft, sandy bottom that very gradually gets deep. Sandbars provide splashy water play with water less than 1 foot deep. Numerous indoor and yard games are provided. Seaside wildlife abounds. The cottage allows for "free range parenting" at it's best!

Try'n Rest is located 2.5 hours southeast of Northern Virginia/Washington D.C. area, or 2 hours northeast of Richmond, Virginia.

A true delight!
Enchanting cottage right on the water. Rest, restore and be in awe of the world again. Gorgeous sunrises on your own sandy beach right out the back door. Beautiful night skies to see and name all the stars. A screened in back porch with a the view that calls you every waking moment. Butterflies, hummingbirds, eagles, dolphins, and cranes are just a few of the peaceful passers by we shared the week with. We cried when we left, can’t wait to come back!

Great stay on the Bay
Our family enjoyed a wonderful stay at the cottage. A very peaceful family getaway, the house is very charming in a beautiful spot on the water. We enjoyed just sitting on the screened in porch and deck, wading and fishing in the Bay, and taking a drive into Reedville for dinner. It was a great break from our everyday busy lives and to connect with family. The house has a well stocked kitchen, laundry, games, and beach chairs. Would love to visit again.

Private Escape
I booked this property for a short getaway and what sold me was the beach access! It did not disappoint. My kids loved being down by the water and close to the house. The water was clean and the perfect temperature and the sand was wonderful for building sand castles. The house had comfy beds and everything we needed for two adults and three kids to feel comfortable and relaxed. My only feedback is cell service was worse than I expected, but the owners did make that note when I booked the property. Also the bugs were awful...we all came home with the worst bugs bites from being outside, even after we used bug spray! All said, I recommend this property and will be going back.

Charming Cottage
House is charming albeit rustic. The best part is the screened in porch. We grilled all our dinners and ate on the porch. There is a bug problem and several traps all over the house. Mostly ants. Some evidence of mice. And the house wasn't as clean as I would have expected. Dusty and I found trash behind one of the beds. But if you don't mind it being a little rustic, then you will have a perfect and serene vacation. We brought our own kayaks and floats for the river. Sarah is very responsive and a lovely host. It's nice that linens and bath towels are provided. It would be nice if there was a trash receptacle outside too, so you don't have to make several trips to the dump once the kitchen trash bin fills.

Peaceful
We absolutely adore this rental! The location is stunning, the home embraces you with its 100 plus year arms and it is so tranquil. Be certain to feed the hummingbirds while there. They put on quite a show all week and we loved watching them. Sarah, host of the cottage, had great communication with our family and made checking in a breeze. Thanks for sharing your family’s home with us. We will return!!!
