About this property

A second floor apartment with en-suite near UNE, Southern Maine beach’s.

We are a custom built home designed by Maine archetect Caleb Johnson and are settled on a wooded lot which overlooks Biddeford Pool Marsh which is a Rachel Carson bird sanctuary. We are a 2 minute walk to the center of the Campus of the University of New England and a 7 minute walk to Hills Beach a secluded Maine beach . We are also just a 10 minute drive or a bike ride to Fortunes Rocks beach which offers two miles of sand and is known for its surfing. Biddeford Pool (3 miles) Kennebunkport (10 miles) Old Orchard beach (12 miles) and Portland (20 miles) are an easy drive.

Room offers one bedroom with en suite bathroom. We have a living room with potential to sleep several on a jumbo recliner couch and on 2 extra long twin beds. This is a completely private living room for our guests. There is a second full bathroom off the first floor hall and serves guests sleeping in the living room. We DO NOT have a full kitchen but do have a small refrigerator, microwave and toaster. Continental breakfast supplies are available in the living room. A hot tub, beach equipment, and robs are a few of the amenities that are included. We have strong WiFi. Hot tub is open in the winter but is a little more difficult to access In winter.

Wonderful location

This was a terrific place to stay. The rooms were upstairs over the garage, so there was a nice sense of privacy, although there’s an adjoining door to the kitchen. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, with a queen bed, and two single beds in a separate room. Perfect for a family. The property is surrounded by woods and feels secluded, but is only a couple hundred yards from the campus of the University of New England. Great location to visit the university, and an easy 10 minute drive to Biddeford (or half and hour to Portland). Our hosts were lovely people, friendly and helpful, with a very sweet greyhound named Ollie. Terrific stay, highly recommended.

Perfect for a professional visiting UNE

I had a weekend course scheduled at UNE. I could not ask for better lodging. 100% perfect. Clean, beautiful, comfortable. Only 1/3 mi from the campus which was an easy walk (and a better choice since they have parking issues at UNE). I took an easy walk to the trail at Rachel Carson as well. Hot tub - early morning watching the dawn break - serene. Perfect hosts.

Great place, great location

This was our second week-long stay here with our family of four during the summer. We plan on returning next year as well. Quiet location, accessible to everything, and exactly the size space that our family needed.

Lovely place and gracious hosts

Phil and Brenda's place was a very nice place to stay while we were running the Maine Coast half marathon. The hosts thought of every detail and made us feel right at home. We would certainly stay here again when in the area!

A wonderful stay

We were in Biddeford visiting our daughter who is a freshman at UNE. Loved the property and the location being walking distance to campus made for a wonderful visit. Already planning our next stay for move in for the Fall Semester!

Like staying with family

This is our third time staying at Brenda and Phil’s and they are just so sweet. It’s like staying with your grandma and grandpa. They go out of their way to make sure you’re comfortable and happy and have everything you need. We’ll be back next year for year 4!

Clean, quiet, excellent location near UNE and Biddeford Beaches

My wife, our two teenagers, and I enjoyed a week-long Maine vacation here. It was very clean, very quiet, and very conveniently located. EXTREMELY quiet and secluded location while still very close to everything you'd want to visit in the area.

Little paradise

Thank you to Phil and Brenda to have shared with us their little paradise 😊 The place is well located in a quiet area, the courtyard is a beautiful garden with plenty of flowers, a terrasse and a jacuzzi and the appartment was perfect to accomodate a family of four and well decorated.

The perfect Maine retreat!

We loved our stay at Brenda and Phil's home! They were so welcoming to us and made every effort to make the stay comfortable and memorable for us. Just like many of the other reviews state, it truly is like staying at your grandparents house and the property was truly so beautiful and the perfect spot for us to stay as we explored so many gorgeous towns on Maine's southern coast. The rooms were so spacious and communication was seamless if we ever needed any extra supplies etc. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again! Thank you Brenda and Phil for making our Maine trip truly unforgettable!

Getaway

Brenda and Phil are great hosts!! Their hospitality is unmatched and all of the little touches didn't go unnoticed. The rental is close to great food and shopping, we even took day trips into Massachusetts and New Hampshire. We definitely enjoyed our stay!!

It's a magical place

We absolutely loved our stay. It was very comfortable for our family of 4 (2 adults 2 teenagers). Comfy beds, great extras like bagels and other snacks and a gorgeous property. Hosts were very kind and friendly. Close distance to beaches and cute towns close by. We would stay here again!

Cozy hideaway close to beaches!

We had a fabulous visit. Our cozy room had a dedicated shower, coffee, snacks and comfortable seating. The room across was also great and roomy and had a fridge and additional snacks. Our hostess and host were delightful and so helpful. We felt every little detail had been addressed. The outside grounds were beautiful and the hot tub was so relaxing amidst the fruit trees and flowers. We will definitely stay here again. Although it was just my husband and myself we could have had 2 other adults with us in the opposite room which had a large couch and two twin beds. The beach was close by car and as we were visiting family it was a perfect cozy retreat for us.

A perfect introduction to Maine hospitality!

My first visit to Maine. Friends of mine vacation in Maine annually. They were lodging nearby. The Johnsons' home is beautiful. Their son did an awesome job designing the structure. I particularly enjoyed the AC. The two room suite was just the right size. Thank you for being the perfect hosts! Definitely will consider this property again when I return to Maine.

An excellent, cozy stay

I was visiting family who goes to UNE and you cannot be closer to campus than this. That being said, it was also impressively well isolated from the noise you would associate with a college campus. Every morning we would wake up and see the beautiful marsh behind the property, and not think we were a 2 minute drive from college dorms. The accomodations were excellent, we had plenty of room to ourselves for our stay The hosts have tons of recommendations for any sort of venue you may be looking for. All in all, a wonderful stay, and I will be visiting again!

Like staying with your grandparents

This was not the first time we’ve stayed at Brenda & Phil’s home and won’t be the last. They’re so thoughtful and caring and out such detail into their home. It is like you’re staying at your grandparents’ home because the space you’re in is connected to their house, but a separate entrance. They like to make sure you’re happy and comfortable. Every amenity you could imagine is there and we’ll be back yet again next year.

Great People

Very nice accommodations! Very welcoming. I thought it would be more seperate, but once we were settled ,it was just fine and we had more then enough space for my husband and 3 children ,ages 13,12 and 9! My son adored their dog and he seemed to adore my special needs son ! Might be hard to find at night, if arriving for the first time but otherwise ut was perfect ! They went above and beyond for us ! Even let us use their personal freezer!

Refined Serenity

We can't say enough about how wonderful our experience was staying with Benda and Phil (and Ollie). From the remote setting, to the quiet upstairs apartment, this truly had everything we needed for 9 days. Brenda has decorated with the traveler in mind. Sleeping area was separate from the "living" area. We utilized the small desk to use our laptop, and overall had plenty of space to spread out. The window blind on remote control was great in the mornings, there were plenty of blankets, pillows, pool towels and even bath robes. The snacks they supplied were perfect to get our mornings started (bagels, cream cheese, muffins, jams, peanut butter, OJ.....). Brenda and Phil have full lives, and stay busy, but were always happy to take a break from their yard work to chat with us and to hear about our day and future travel plans. We try to get to this area at least once per year, and look forward to staying here again.

Very nice place

It was a very cute place to stay in a quiet area. There was no door lock so we were able to just walk in and head upstairs. The husband greeted us with their dog. He was very friendly. We did notice a bunch of popcorn under the couch, which was not a big deal. We picked it up. Also, our second night there we noticed a random disposable razor on the ledge of the shower that we did not notice the first night there. Overall, it was a nice place to stay but beware of the slanted ceilings/walls. We did hit our heads a couple times trying to get to the beds on the back side of the couch.

Amazing Hospitality!

We stayed here for 2 night (2 adults & 2 teens). Brenda and Phil were extremely accommodating! We were driving from Mystic and the weather forecast was horrible rain and storms. We left early to get ahead of it so I messaged and asked if we could check in early. Brenda got back to me very quickly and they were able to accommodate us. When we arrived Brenda greeted us and showed us around. She goes above and beyond! There were bagels, snacks, juice, candies, etc. left for us. She even asked if there was anything specific that my kids would eat. Everything was very clean and comfortable. It was perfect for what we needed. I would highly recommend!

Perfect space

Brenda and Phil’s place was a perfect location for my daughter and I to stay while she visited UNE and also for us to drive up to Freeport and Portland. Their recommendations for dining and when we asked about what we should see (in winter) were spot on. We felt comfortable coming and going, even when we unexpectedly didn’t arrive until almost midnight, they were very accommodating. Oliver, their very well behaved greyhound, is a wonderful greeter. The layout was fantastic with a bedroom and bathroom on one side of hallway and twin beds and a big sofa to lounge on after our day (a little desk set up where my daughter did some homework as well). In the rooms there was a coffee maker and breakfast foods like bagels and jam, even almond milk and orange juice, as well as popcorn and fresh fruit for snacking. We did not take advantage of the hot tub this visit, but I’m sure we will in the future. It was just an amazing place, surrounded by a beautiful setting of nature trees, hosted by some really great people! Thank you Brenda and Phil, we will be back. :)

Location is Good - Owner is Nice

This property is in a really great location for the exploring that we wanted to do, the room served its purpose and the owner we met was very nice. Depending on your needs, here is a little more information to help anyone looking to determine if this is a good fit: • Owner is friendly and will meet you at the door several times throughout your stay as you go in and out • Great location if you want to explore Portland, Boothbay Harbor or Salem - we branched out lots! • To get to the space, you will go through the owner's laundry room and up skinny stairs - as noted in another review, it is not as separate as you think it may be from the listing • The bedroom is situated above the owner's space • The hot tub is right outside the owner's space • Walking to the beach as described is probably not the most ideal or safe • In July - mosquitos are pretty rampant, and sitting outside in the lovely space at the firepit is a non-option unless you put chemicals on - we tried :) • As noted in another review, the doors are not locked. You do not have the capability of locking behind you and if you are going to be late, you will need to let the owner know so the door remains unlocked for you • As noted - there is no kitchen area-prepping anything may be difficult (depending on complexity) if you want to plan some meals in All in all, we had a great visit to Maine! This property would be a perfect fit (and obviously has) for some.

We are an active retired couple who built our house to retire near our grandchildren. Our son is a well know ME architect and he designed a very custom home for his parents. Our home has been featured in Maine Home and Design's Ageless ME May 2018 issue.

Why they chose this property

We have a wonderful location on a wooded lot on a marsh which is a Rachel Carson bird sanctuary. It is only a short walk to the the peninsula of Hills Beach where you can see both the sunrise and sunset. We are also basically on the campus of UNE with its new tennis and pickle board courts just across the street. We are very close to Biddeford Pool and Kennebunkport and Portland.

What makes this property unique

You will love Brenda and Phil's Place because it is new and secluded in the Maine woods. However we are very close to everything on the Southern Coast of Maine. Our home was designed for Airbnb and VOB in mind so we have a separate entrance and you also have use of our washer dryer which is close to your suite and all equipment you need for a day at the beach.
