Dreamy in every way

Perfect spot for us and our grandchildren together to enjoy a week at the beach and visit with family nearby- Tracy was amazing and so helpful. We just loved the charm of the neighborhood and the home just enjoyed it thoroughly…. Accommodated us perfectly.Also so awesome to have use of beach chairs and boogie boards that was a favorite of the kids

Hidden Gem

Unless someone tells you about St. Malo, you have no idea what it's like. Quiet getaway with tennis, pickelball and private beach (although tide makes beach access difficult). If you are looking for a quiet place in Southern California, this is it!

Absolute gem in San Malo.

Such an excellent property for extended family. We enjoyed every moment of every day over a 6 day Thanksgiving gathering. We love the secluded nature of San Malo. JT, the gate guard welcomed us with an amazing personal touch! We would love to come back every year!

Family Vacation

We loved the spaciousness of the house and the amenities in the area. It was a perfect location for our family to be together. We loved the beauty of the house and having the beach in walking distance. The house reminded us of when we visited Germany and Switzerland!! There was a couple of things that weren't good. The smell of mildew in the master bedroom and all of the outdoor cushions had mildew on them. Also the freezer handle came right off ( a quick fix with tools that we didn't have) when we were opening it. We let the property manager know, who was very helpful to us with issues. Thank you for sharing your beautiful house with us.

Amazing property in a beautiful private community

St. Malo is a picturesque small private community with a beach, volleyball, tennis and pickleball courts. The house was beautifully decorated and welcoming, with lots of comfortable seating in two levels in the living room. The floorplan surrounds a lovely courtyard with outdoor seating and a BBQ. There is also a hot tub facing the lagoon. Three of the four bedrooms had attached baths, one with hallway access too, which was great for our extended family get together, plus a half bath. The kids' room included two twins and a double bed. It was the perfect spot for our family get together with lots to keep the kids and adults busy in a warm and inviting home and community.

Family reunion

Well worn rental in a gated neighborhood. On the negative side: Way too much furniture inside making organization difficult. Dead plants in pots on the patio. (Why are they there?) Filthy barbecue that I had to clean. Daily ant raids in the kitchen. Mildew on the outdoor furniture. On the positive side: Convenient to the beach. Excellent pickleball courts. Nice jacuzzi. The highlight: Service from Tracy when we needed help with the security lock and later with a clogged toilet. Tracy was great!

Over all a wonderful stay

There was a problem at check in, no record of my reservation, but it was soon straightened out. The lay out of the house was wonderful. There was no coffee pot and we were told the owners don't drink coffee. The shower in the first bedrm had a frozen middle lever that regulated the temp and was not working well. We manipulated it to get by, but it needs some attention. Garage was filled with bikes, but many unrideable, but several OK. All in all it is a wonderful house and we enjoyed our stay very much.

Homecoming

As a native Californian, there are few places as beautiful, private, and pristine as St Malo. This home’s design is ideal for large family get-togethers. We cooked together and relaxed in the inner courtyard. Some reviews mention the lack of sand, and yes, the sea level is higher and beach erosion has been a challenge for this community, but during low tide you can walk on the beach to Carlsbad or head north to Oceanside Pier. My sister and her husband walked the beach to Carlsbad with the older kids during moderate tide and we drove with the younger ones and we all arrived around the same time. Parking during the week is easy and free on the street. And stopping for ice cream at Handels in Carlsbad Village afterwards is a must! The beds were very comfortable, and the host was extremely responsive to all requests, like when the TV remote’s batteries died, she brought some over with a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies! We plan to return. It was very relaxing and we miss it already!

A very special place indeed..

For someone who has been visiting San Diego County for decades, I was overjoyed to find such a hidden gem. This neighborhood is so special. Tracy was very quick to reply and answered all of my continuous questions. When a minor problem arose, it was quickly handled and made right. The home is so wonderful for families, we can’t wait to go back. I highly recommend researching the beach as pictures can be deceiving. Anytime other then low tide, you can not access the beach and walk along the shore. The community has its own “beach” located at the top of the stairs. There are many accommodations at this beach to make it perfect in its own way. The lack of beach access helps keep the community secluded. It’s a gated community with very nice security guards who constantly patrol and are so friendly as they do so. The residents here were truly wonderful. St. Malo will always hold a special place in our hearts. It’s absolutely 1 of a kind.

The location, architecture, and the ambience are great. We loved the décor, kitchen layout, comfy beds & laundry. But no welcome manual with WIFI, info on operations or jacuzzi (which isn’t a pool as claimed) or "mgr" contact info. No front door key was provided. To lock home, we had to enter and exit past the trashcans on the side of the house... degrading. No garage parking as claimed or “entire home” or bike usage granted. A pair of entry French doors opening onto the courtyard didn’t properly close or lock, manager claimed had been secured WITH A ZIP TIE, risking guests’ safety. The property didn’t offer local channels or network tv. Guests not allowed to control the AC but managed remotely and at one point 62 degrees!Electronic remote for window coverings in 1 bedroom non-op & fixed in an OPEN position facing social courtyard, denying guest privacy. Patio lawn cushions terribly stained.Property mgr appears non-compliant with California state law requiring RE license for mgmt. Due to misunderstanding re pets, we were unreasonably ask to leave early and property soon relisted at 400 more per night, keeping our money, and going silent re any credit for the last two nights or to document for us the added fees for cleaning (which we offered to pay). And our VRBO inbox exchange is no longer accessible. From the preview on 7/20/25 until the threats on 8/3/25, we felt mistreated and misled. We will stay at St. Malo again, but never at this property! Creepy.

Love St Malo

This was our favorite St Malo property so far! The property layout was great form our multi generational family. Unlike other properties in this gated community, the check in was challenging. The guard at the gate had no notice of our reservation. There was no welcome packet. Property had good high tech for entry, HVAC, etc., but there were no instructions. The manager did not respond to questions. We had to call in a private tech person to set up AC for first night. The the system was set up in German We finally got person phone number for manager (on opposite coast) from the gate guard The property manager has not responded to request for refund on damage deposit. There was no damage during our stay (the manager requested and was provided with a list of things malfunctioning upon arrival!). We have not had this issue before. It has been 10’days since our departure date. How does VRBO handle return of deposits if property manager is non responsive? Thank you

Location, Location, Location!

The house was great in and of itself. Location was great. I have always loved St. Malo, growing up in Oceanside. I now live in Texas and the family traveled back for my father’s memorial service. We had family from all over and various age ranges. The houses layout was really perfect for us . Entry was easy. The kids enjoyed the hot tub and beach when weather permitted. We would rent here again. However there were some real negatives. Not deal breakers but frustrations.We’ve rented lots of Verbos in various places and no matter how small or rustic they have always had a welcome book with instructions on various things from the towels to window blinds. This place had NO instructions for the house no welcome anything. We pretty much had to guess how thing worked. Bedding was really warn and pillows sucked. Towels were at a minimal for bathrooms. It’s listed as newly renovated and that is not accurate. Kitchen has new countertops and thats about it. The thing that bothered me the most was in the listing it said there was a sitting area upstairs but the stairway was blocked off with a cabinet and string. With two signs that said DO NOT GO UPSTAIRS. So cheesy. Just keep the upstairs doors locked and leave it at that. Outdoor patio furniture is so full of black mold you do not want to sit on it and we had to fill our own propane tank for the grill. Like I said overall the house is lovely it’s just frustrating that such a great place is not better cared for.

Family Gathering

This is our third time renting this property! We love it!! We try to make it an every other year tradition. Plenty of room for all of us! I have siblings who also rent in the area so we get to enjoy them and cousins! The house is well supplied from beach towels to dishes to boogie boards to Bikes. The patio area has been transformed into a very comfortable gathering place with plush couches and a fire pit. And a hot tub over looking the lagoon in the back! Lovely! Tracey was very friendly and helpful! We look forward to summer of 2021!

Impeccable property in quaint French-Country beach community!

This was our first VRBO vacation experience and it was AMAZING! Attention to every detail made this a fabulous hub for our family gathering. Tracy Zundel made sure we had everything we needed and was responsive to our questions prior to and during our stay. The home is impeccably clean, beautifully decorated, and extremely comfortable. Beach toys and bikes are provided which made travel easy and the private beach is well-maintained. We hated to leave and will definitely be back to this property!
