FAQ ~
➤ Can I host an event?
We totally understand the appeal, but we do have a strict no-event policy, enforced by both our front gate security and the HOA. Only guests listed on the reservation are allowed on the property unless approved in advance, and the community does not permit gatherings like weddings or birthday celebrations with additional guests - we appreciate you respecting this so we can keep everything running smoothly for everyone.
➤ What do guests enjoy most?
There’s really no place like St. Malo in the world....it feels like you're in a different country because the architecture is so charming. The house itself has prime position on the Buena Vista lagoon, the lush grass meets the water plus you have ocean views on the front side of the house so its just a very special vacation home. To wake up and sip coffee looking at the ocean, or meditate on in the backyard with amazing views, its the perfect place to relax and recharge.
➤ Is the area safe and good for families?
Totally. It’s also great for kids. Our house is in a private, gated community with a full-time guard. The roads are paved, tons of kids (drive slow!). If you have very young children, they must be supervised at all times because the house is lakefront..
➤ Is it good for remote workers?
We have high-speed internet in every room and there's a ton of quiet areas to get work done should you need to while here on vacation.

St Malo is a great location for multi generation family. Ocean access, lagoon views
European courtyard concept of this home great for privacy in separate en suite bedrooms
We had an absolutely perfect stay at this home. From the moment we arrived, it felt like we’d been transported to a quaint European lakeside village—hard to believe we were still in California. The location is unbeatable, right on the lake with easy access to the beach, which made every day feel like a getaway within a getaway. The house itself was ideal for our family. Everyone had their own space to relax, while the kitchen brought us all together for wonderful family dinners. It was fully equipped with everything we could possibly need—and then some.We made great use of all the amenities, from playing ping-pong to riding the bikes and enjoying the beach gear. There was never a dull moment, and everything was thoughtfully provided to make the stay fun and effortless. We truly couldn’t have asked for a better weekend. This home exceeded our expectations in every way, and we would absolutely love to come back!
Excellent! Beautiful location and plenty of amenities for entertainment within the home. My family and I had a wonderful time celebrating my Graduation. I Definitely recommend for tranquility and relaxation! Checking in and out was very easy and host was clear, and timely in communicating instructions!
Our family had a great stay at this special home. We stayed for Thanksgiving week and the host provided excellent communication. The amenities at the home are great for kids - we utilized the tennis and pickle ball courts, the basketball hoop and the beach volleyball. Unfortunately other than the sand at the volleyball court, there was no beach to walk on as the waves came all the way up to the rocks and stairs. The beach was the only thing missing from our almost perfect stay. The locaction is also great, within walking distance to shops and restaurants and easy freeway access. note, in the winter, the house is a bit drafty, but it was nice to have the fireplace. We would stay here again.

Vacation
The location was wonderful! However the house is in need of maintenance and beds were old and in need of replacement. We still had a wonderful vacation as always in St.Malo.

I am sorry that Audrey was not 100% satisfied with her stay. This is actually the lowest rating we have ever received.
Maintenance of a two-story beach home near the ocean (i.e. salt air) is admittedly always an issue and we dedicate 100% of our annual rental income in excess of our standard operating expenses to beach home upgrades and maintenance, including painting and repairs. This year in 2023 we have upgraded most of our patio furniture, replaced the front lawn (think gophers and rabbits) with very natural looking artificial turf. We have extended the irrigation and sprinkler system in the back yard to restore and improve the uniformity of the largest lagoon-adjacent back lawn in Saint Malo. We have undergone a full termite treatment with Pacific Coast Termite and are now on their maintenance plan. We will soon be upgrading or fully replacing our gas furnace in time for this winter season.
Regarding the beds, all beds are relatively new except for the master bed which is about 5-6 years old and seems to me to be in good condition, although it is probably due for an upgrade in the next year or so. In fact, our two twin beds in bedroom #4 were literally brand new at the time of this stay, so I am perplexed by this guest's assessment of the beds as "old and in need of replacement." No other renters appear to have come to this conclusion. We certainly want our renters sleeping comfortably.
It is worth mentioning that this particular renter (actually two families with children) broke our corner nook area marble coffee table into three pieces (not two) which she claimed she "tripped" over. Not sure how that came about. This is frankly a little difficult to comprehend, but with the many Saint Malo renters we have hosted over the years, I suppose accidents are bound to happen.
It was a great private beach location. We had three couples and two kids. Everyone had their own space and bathroom. The family gathering area was perfect to relax and talk. Ping pong, beach and tennis made this location perfect. Not to mention near Torrey Pines.

Thank you, Ashley! Glad it worked out well for you, despite all the year-end (much needed) rain!

We picked this property for the location to the beach, tennis courts and gated security.
It had 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, with a central living room kitchen area. Great for us to watch movies and games together, then private bedroom and bathroom.
I can ’t say enough nice things about this house. First of all, St. Malo is a very special place. You feel like you are transported to Normandy France. The architecture makes it feel like a small village. The house was even better than the photos. They updated so you have all the modern amenities and kept the old world charm at the same time. I would recommend this for a family vacation. We will be back.
Love this private community! The neighborhood looks like a fairytale. The owner is lovely and we felt very safe and comfortable. Kids loved all the trains running past the lagoon. Downstairs rooms are private and can be noisy if you're sensitive to upstairs sounds, and glad it wasn't raining because the only way upstairs is an outside staircase. Kitchen and bathrooms are well stocked. Garage has plenty of beach equipment and toys and we enjoyed the ping pong. Peek-a-boo ocean view upstairs and you can hear the waves clearly from the front rooms. No beach at high tide but there is a private sand area for the kids and you can climb over the rocks to get to the beach at low tide. Thank you, Cobe!
Very spacious property that allows for everyone in your party to have their own space. Each bedroom has it's own bath. There are four of them. Two on second floor and two on the ground level. Beautiful grassy backyard that backs up to the Buena Vista Lagoon. Rabbits, ducks, and even a baby possum visited the grassy backyard daily. Very safe and secure community that was nice to walk around and enjoy looking at the architecture. Everything you would need to prepare a meal was present. Toaster didn't work but used the toaster oven and that worked fine. Have stayed in many Vrbos and this one is, for sure, at the top of the list. Owner Cobe was very thorough with instructions about the property. Would definitely stay again in the future.
This property in St. Mail development is beautiful and unique. We had planned to spend our family vacation at a beach, so we’re initially quite disappointed that you cannot safely access the waves from the “private beach access point.” Instead, we drove 15 min to Carlsbad beach for that. We did have fun playing with the grandchildren in the sand at the “beach club” property. From the pictures, we thought this was basically across the street from the property, but was about a block down the street. The house provided a very nice gathering/eating place as well as nice privacy and peace in the individual suites. We also had great fun playing pickle ball on the paddle court. Overall, it was delightful. We just had to adjust to the beach issues. Thank you!

Cynthia,
Regarding the Association cabana facility, private beach and volleyball court, our website, which includes photos of this Association area, does not intend to suggest that it is right across the street from our vacation home. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I will update our website to assure that it states clearly that the private Association beach is about a 5 minute walk (or 2 minute bike ride) from our vacation home.
Regarding the "private beach access point" to the public beach, Oceanside and a number of beach communities along the Southern California coast have been experiencing either permanent or temporary conditions of sand erosion due to a host of causes - both climate/tides related and man-made. Luckily ours are temporary as the City of Oceanside typically dredges sand from the harbor annually to replenish the beaches to the south including Saint Malo. All levels of government from the City of Oceanside and Carlsbad to the County of San Diego to the Coastal Commission to Sacramento are working towards a long-term solutions to preserve and protect our sand beaches.
It so happens that during your stay the tides were high and there was very little public sand (luckily we always have our private sand beach area) which made normal access to the public beach and ocean either very difficult or not possible at all at high tide. This condition did later reverse and the public beach sand and normal tides returned.
Everyone in our beach communities has a stake in our beautiful public sand beaches and going forward we are all vigorously supporting governmental and private efforts to achieve long-term and lasting solutions.

P.S. We have now converted one of our three tennis courts to four pickleball courts - a smashing success! VERY popular! We even now have an annual pickleball tournament in addition to our tennis, volleyball and golf tournaments!
We were totally impressed with this lovely home in a lovely, quiet neighborhood. The place was spotless, abundantly equipped with every amenity--kitchen, linen, beach gear, etc. The setup of the bedrooms offered even more privacy than we expected. Great for a multi-generation family.
Walking distance to well-maintained tennis courts, and beach volleyball court, ping-pong table in garage and bikes all added to our activity level.
The only drawback was the private beach was not one you could set up chairs and walk into the water. We drove to Carlsbad State Beach for that setup. However, if you simply want to set up a spot and look out on the ocean and listen to the surf, the private beach is fine. And speaking of looking out on water, the backyard with mature trees and expansive green grass going clear to the edge of the lagoon offered many hours of relaxation for the less athletic of us!
we love our stays at this amazing home, and working with the owner is a breeze. We look forward to this trip every year, and the house and its location never disappoint.
Our family of 8 had the nicest stay in St. Malo. This property is fantastic! We especially loved the beautifully landscaped yard backing the lagoon, the private areas for each bedroom, the well appointed kitchen, and the quaint beach cottage feel. The gated community and private beach are enchanting, and everyone was so friendly. We loved riding to the beach and around the village on the bicycles, playing ping pong, and use of the beach items. Everything you could need or want is here.
We were worried about not having air conditioning but the cool ocean breeze was perfect. This is our new favorite ocean vacation destination, second only to Hawaii.
If you have small children who need to be supervised, this may not be the place for you. The separated private quarters for all 4 bedrooms was perfect for older children and teens, but could be an issue for children under 12. It was perfect for our family. You also must be able to climb stairs to enter the main living area, which was also not a problem for us.

Thank you for the stellar review, Joe. Glad you enjoyed it so much. Sorry for the late response - just realizing that I should be taking the time to respond to all reviews one way or the other.
This lovely home in the unique and charming St Malo Beach gated community is very special. It is the owners vacation home of many years and is cozy and well equipped with everything you need. It has 2 bedrooms on the first level and 2 on the second level. Nice deck, patio and yard for the children to play. We watched the sunset every night at the small beach club
nearby. Owner helpful and responsive.
Very unique community and home. Like being back in France or Germany. Very comfortable and well equipped. NOT appropriate for those with difficulty climbing stairs.
This place is an experience! Stocked kitchen for cooking and dining. Comfortable bedrooms, updated bathrooms, and cozy living room. Just loved it!! Hope to go back again.
I don't know how I have I NOT heard of St Malo before our VRBO stay?! Cute old world architecture, the house amenities were great, ample bikes to use and a beautiful private beach area. Kids had a blast with the sand volleyball, the pingpong table, and the backyard lawn. We had 3 generations of our family stay here. Sadly, we discovered the beautiful sunset only on our last night there. Cobe was super responsive to all our questions and needs.
Our family enjoyed our stay and had a wonderful time. The location is amazing and quiet. The home is lovely and cozy. The patio and backyard view of the lagoon is breathtaking and serene.
Such a beautiful area and a nice house to stay in. Quiet and private and so easy to get to the beach. The owner is always responsive and friendly. We keep coming back again and again!

About the host
Hosted by Cobe Haskell
A life-long Southern California resident originally from Pasadena with a beautiful wife, 3 boys - I mean young men! - and a dog named Nikki...
Why they chose this property
Parents bought the property way back in 1957 and built their dream beach "cottage" in 1973. The family rented for a few weeks every summer growing up until we actually had a beach home of our own to share. Certain to provide memories for a lifetime - a location and serene coastal environment you will never forget.
What makes this property unique
Unique gated beach community of French provincial architecture and gardens founded in 1929 - nothing quite like it in on the entire west coast.
