About this property

CEDAR LANE - Private Cottage, Sophisticated Country Charm

Located just one mile from Middleburg, you’ll find this stunning two-bedroom, one-level house with an open floor plan perfect whether you’re in town for a wedding, a honeymoon, a weekend getaway, or just private accommodations in the country.

Middleburg is in Orange County Hunt Territory and is a horse lover’s paradise, with foxhunting, polo, driving, showing, racing, and eventing all here. Ask about horse stalls and turn out if interested. Our road is popular for walking dogs, afternoon runs and an occasional horse in harness pulling a cart or trail riders.

The area is also of interest to wine connoisseurs, with a number of vineyards nearby that are open for tastings and tours.

Or, you can explore the village of Middleburg, just a 5 minute drive or 15 minute walk away. We are also close to Upperville, Marshall, and The Plains, which have their own unique shops and restaurants.

Whatever you choose to do, you’ll return to your private oasis after a busy day. Gather on the front flagstone porch in the cool of the pine and cedar trees, or watch the sun set as you grill on the new back deck with a view of the stable and surrounding pastures. Slowly unwind as you take in the feeling of a Virginia afternoon fading into evening.

When you enter the house, you’ll be greeted by the open, light-filled living room and dining area.

To the left of the living and dining areas, you’ll find an up to date, fully equipped kitchen with lots of counter space, where you can prep special cuts from one of several local butchers or concoct something delicious with local produce found at the nearby farmers markets.

There are two bedrooms. One King size bed can be broken apart into two XL twin beds if needed.. The second bedroom is set up with a pair of antique cannonball twin beds made up with cozy toile bedding.

There is a very large closet in the master bedroom that that has a window and can be set up with a crib, if desired.

A large and well-appointed full bathroom with large vanity and storage and walk in shower is off the master bedroom. There is another half bath down the hall.

We hope you’ll join us in Middleburg for some of your favorite country pursuits!

Added Amenity:
There is a completely separate lower level apartment. Access is separate and car parking is separate and not visible from upstairs. It was once occupied by a senior writer for the Chronicle of the Horse.

This apartment has been remodeled and is available as an add on for this property or as a separate unit. It is has its own living space with small kitchen, large and newly remodeled bathroom with walk in glass shower, and vanity with lots of counter space. The bedroom has a queen bed, walk in closet, washer and dryer and a large desk for a work space.

The parking is tucked away behind a great deal of landscaping and separate also from the upper level. The HVAC units are separate and there is heavy duty insulation between the floors.

If you have questions about this, be sure to ask.

The reviews will let you know that every guest feels completely secluded and private and in love with their own little oasis.

We keep a mowed path around the 3 acre property that makes for a nice little walk with a cup of coffee or glass of wine. Parsons Road is another wonderful shaded walk, jog or bike ride.

Perfect peaceful getaway

We were very happy with our stay. We were very happy with how clean the property was and how easy it was to find. It's very close to the restaurant and shopping. We will use this property again and again or a weekend away from the city. Thank you for a great stay.

Great updated property and Great host

Everything was as described. This is a newly remodeled cottage with modern amenities. The host and caretaker were across the street and a call away. My wife and 4 year old really enjoyed it.

Perfection

We had the loveliest weekend at Cedar Lane Cottage. The property is magical, the house was comfortable, clean, updated and very pretty to boot, and it was conveniently located. An easy drive or long walk to town, while still maintaining the feel of a true countryside escape - stars and fireflies at night, birds chirping and deer grazing in the morning. We hope to return soon!

Nice Stay

The cottage was exactly as pictured and immaculate. Everything we needed was there and the check-in/check-out process was seamless. Very much appreciated the "newness" and cleanliness of the home. We walked into town and it took about 35 minutes. Would not recommend doing so in the dark as the walk is on dirt/country roads. Would recommend this charming cottage to friends for sure.

A perfect getaway.

We visited from St Louis for Thanksgiving weekend. The cottage is exactly as described, clean, comfortable beds and furniture. The house is secluded on a dirt road yet very close to Middleburg and surrounding small towns. We visited the Sporting Museum and Library, Mt Defiance Cidery, hiked at Sky Meadow Park, toured Morven Park in Leesburg, visited antique stores and went to a Fox Hunt on Thanksgiving Day. DC is a little over an hour away. Be sure and visit The Whole Ox store in Marshall for really great beef, cheese, bread, dairy products and other specialty items. Looking forward to a return visit.

A very welcoming home away from home

The cottage was spotlessly clean and welcoming with peaceful views. The kitchen inventory of appliances, tools, and basic pantry items was fully stocked and we're pretty fussy about those things. The caretaker lives nearby but we only needed him to start up the gas fireplace ..... it was pretty rainy and cold during our 2-day stay and the fire along with a most comfortable sofa was a joy. We took advantage of the in-depth list of "things to do/ places to go" booklet that resides on the dinner table. And now we know what a "cidery" is. And Missy, our host, was completely flexible about a booking error that we had made. We will definitely do a mini-vacation there again.

Pure Tranquility

This property is amazing! Missy is incredibly responsive and helpful. She gave wonderful recommendations on local favorites and insider tips. The cottage is perfectly represented in the photos. It is very clean and well appointed. If you are looking for a quiet get-a-way in a bucolic region, this place is perfect! The grounds are like your own private oasis with a beautiful cedar lined driveway, large backyard/pasture to walk in, and my favorite spot - the porch swing, which is surrounded by tall shade trees and hydrangea bushes. We had daily visitors in the yard, ranging from a family of deer (Bambi included), cardinals, chipmunks, hummingbirds, bunnies and the neighborhood cat. The town of Middleburg is incredibly charming and has a wide variety of restaurants and shops, all less than 2 miles away. We are already looking forward to staying here again!

Beautiful getaway spot, could use a few updates

The cottage was very charming from the outside and check-in was easy. The beds were comfortable. Those looking for a bit of country might like the experience. There were several things that could be addressed to make the cottage even better and match the price for the stay: - As others have stated, there are no window treatments in the rooms except the bedrooms/bathrooms which leaves people who are guests feeling very exposed. There should at least be shades on all the windows to pull down at night. - The outside furniture on both the porch and back deck could use an update. The pots and pans could use replacement. - There is a renter downstairs which we knew about but there wasn't a lock or chain of any type on our side. Perhaps put a chain lock on the VBRO side for safety and assurance. - There was such a strong perfume/cleaning product smell in the property that we could smell it before we even opened the doors. It is way too strong of a fragrance in the cottage. It was like sleeping in someone else's perfume bottle.

Serene + Centrally Located

Such a serene cottage nestled in the countryside, but close to quaint Middleburg. Was in town for an event, so didn’t spend too much time on the property. But it was a very comfortable stay when we were at the cottage. The house is beautiful and comfortable with a ton of privacy. I think 2- 4 is the ideal number of people for this property, since there is only one shower and it’s located in the master bedroom. The cottage is located down a sedluded gravel road - which for the city girl added to the adventure (especially when coming home at night). But after a few nights I got used to it.

Lovely Cottage in Beautiful and Serene Setting

This home is simply lovely and very quiet and serene. The layout is fantastic for 4 people and there was plenty of room to spread out. The kitchen was well stocked and the deck was a nice spot to enjoy meals. The house is a little expensive for only sleeping 4 people, but the decor is lovely and the owner clearly cares about decorating her home with high quality items. We felt the splurge was worth it for the peaceful environment.

Weekend getaway with family

I spent the weekend here with my husband and 2 kids. The property is lovely. Peaceful and quiet. The home has been updated nicely and the grounds are very beautiful. The owner was very responsive and helpful. Please be sure to read the entire property description. I either did not or forgot but there is a tenant using ground level/basement of home. Wasn't an issue at all but with 2 kids, I had to remind them where they could explore and where they could not.

Beautiful home. We attended an event at a nearby resort that kept us pretty busy so we didn't get a chance to enjoy the property as much as we had liked. However, the property was as described. We didn't hear anything and slept like babies. Thanks for a great experience.

About the host

Hosted by Missy Janes

Host profile image
A native of the area, I grew up on ponies, fox hunting, and competition, and then raised a family and repeated the joys of country life with my children.

I am passionate about good stewardship of the land and conservation, and wrote a handbook called "Life in the Country," available locally. I belong to the garden club which is a member of the Garden Club of America and the Garden Club of Virginia. As an avid gardener, I have created naturalized gardens around a stream and two ponds.

When not in the garden, I work as a professional photographer doing portraits, weddings, gardens and landscapes, and travel photography.

Why they chose this property

I purchased this property many years ago to protect the land. Over the past year, I gutted it entirely for my mother who has since decided she is not yet ready to downsize. I remodeled it to be something I would love, myself, and have had such fun fixing it up and starting some gardens. The house is conveniently located on the east side of town, which is easy for access to DC and Dulles airport, but we are still a true country house.

What makes this property unique

Being so close to town yet next to open conservation land and on a country road is amazing. My children's grandmother lives over the river and through the woods, literally. If you love birds, the night sky, or small town charm you will love Middleburg.
