Beautiful skies at night

Exceptional home! It had everything we needed for a comfortable stay… from games to beach chairs. I loved the outdoor shower, the teens love the tree swing, and my husband loved the air conditioned rooms. All in all, we would definitely stay again. Thank you so much!

November Stay in Puako

The location was perfect for our family holiday - close to beaches and outdoor activities and tucked away from hustle and bustle of resort-based communities. The swing in the backyard was a hit with the kids and the view beyond it was amazing. This is a quiet, relaxing and friendly spot steps away from the beach (and turtles), tucked off the road with all the conveniences of being home.

Paradise

We loved our stay at Sandi and Ken’s place in Puako. It was a quiet beautiful neighborhood with the ocean (and sea turtles) just right across the street and Mauna Kea stargazing in the backyard. Easy to get to get to all the best beaches. Stocked with all the kitchen essentials and beach essentials. We loved our stay and can’t wait to come back!

Great house in nice community

Spent a week in this delightful house in a real community on the big island. The owner was very friendly and communicative. The views from the back of the house are amazing, and the water is close by just across the street with turtles and tide pools. The house is well equipped and comfortable. Would definitely stay here again.

Peaceful, Lovely Stay in Puako

Enjoyed our stay in lovely Puako Ohana Hale. Very well-equipped inside and out with new furnishings. Outside shower is a treat. Access to our favorite beaches was so quick and easy: 8 minutes to Waialea, 10 to Hapuna and 15 to Spencer. Very quiet and peaceful near the end of Puako Beach Dr. Views of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa and the dark night sky were tremendous. Walked across the street to the beach for sunset every evening and had our coffee there every morning. Terrific place, very glad we stayed here.

Perfect Location for Enjoying the Beaches

This property is perfect in every way and we would love to live in this neighborhood permanently. The house is very comfortable and quiet. The views of Mauna Kea are spectacular. The turtles and tide pools are very fun. The central location to all of the beaches was a joy. As other reviewers have commented, your first morning on the lanai will make you feel like you are in Africa looking out over the savanna. There us also plenty of fine dining nearby at the local resort restaurants. We need to come back here again someday.

Ohana Hale

We always go to the Big Island and we always stay in Puako. We’ve rented several VRBO’s over the years, including an oceanfront home. Ohana Hale is our favorite of them all. I LOVED the backyard—very private, stunning sunrises, and lots of birds. Our older adult daughter liked the outdoor shower and tree swing. Our younger adult daughter liked access to good turtle watching and tide pooling just across the street. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking and we appreciated the variety of spices and having plenty of storage containers for leftovers. The area is quiet at night, the beds are comfy, and we slept well. The house is extremely clean with no creepy crawlies. I found the owners to be friendly and responsive. Ohana Hale will see us again!

Family vacation

We very much enjoyed our stay at this house. The layout was great for our family. We especially enjoyed the outside lanai with the views of Mauna Kei. And we loved the proximity to truly sterling beaches. We felt that the neigborhood was a hidden jewel. We rented snorkels and picked up groceries from the nearby Mauna Lani shops. We went snorkeling with manta rays by Mauna Kea resort. The quiet location was ideal for us, with wonderful proximity to wonderful snorkeling and beaches. The night sky was also astounding. I saw two shooting stars.

Great views

The listing accurately shows the house and rooms. The setting is really nice with the back yard having an unobstructed view of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. And the beach is just across the street, we saw several turtles near shore. Nice quiet neighborhood. It is a bit of a drive to most destinations, though to be expected given how dispersed the island is. Hapuna Beach which is gorgeous is a short drive though. Hosts were very responsive to help deal with a few minor maintenance issues.

Perfect vacation rental!

This vacation rental is perfect in every way. The house was clean, nicely furnished and the kitchen was well equipped with lots of appliances and everyday essentials. Beach chairs, beach towels, coolers and snorkel equipment were available for our use and we enjoyed walking a few minutes from the house to a very secluded beach area where the snorkeling was exceptional and turtles were abundant. Walking across the street to watch the sunset (and the turtles coming out of the water to sleep) was amazing. The house is towards the end of a no through street so very quiet and a completely different experience to the busy resorts a few miles away- a great way to avoid the crowds. Close to various beaches by car and a good base from which to explore the island. We were sorry to leave and will definitely try to come back!

Perfect Puako

I’ve stayed in Puako many times and have sampled a variety of accommodations. This 2 bedroom 2 bathroom “Ohana Hale” suited us perfectly! We enjoyed watching the sunrise over Mauna Kea, and the sunset over the ocean. Access to waterfront was easy and our daily routine included a morning shore walk. From the shore, we witnessed many turtles, both swimming and sunning. We also watched a whale spouting close to shore. We used the a/c only once when we first arrived at night to a closed up house. After that, only fans and open windows were needed. The bonus to that approach is you can hear the waves. I highly recommend and hope to visit again in the future! Mahalo!

Well equipped home in quiet location.

We stayed here for a few days while my husband was racing the Half Ironman. It was a great location that allowed us to walk to the Fairmont for the race check ins and start. Great for me as a race spectator. The house was clean and had a lovely backyard, it felt very secluded. The kitchen was perfectly equipped with all the pots/pans/knives etc you need to prep a meal including really nice blenders for smoothies. And we made use of the beach chairs and umbrella. It’s in a quiet residential area that is lovely to stroll through. The little shop/deli on the main road was a great lunch spot. It’s about 30-45 mins from Kona area restaurants and closer to several resorts with restaurants but I’d recommend grabbing some groceries and just enjoying time at the house with a pretty backyard view and quiet relaxing vibes. Would definitely recommend this property!

Wonderful stay in Puako

My husband and I loved this property. It is very quiet, clean and has great views. We spent a lot of time looking at the volcanoes behind the house. It was great there were no other buildings. We hiked a trail behind the house and saw many interesting plants and even scared up a barn owl. One night I woke up and looked at the stars. Amazing! We backpack in Wyoming and the stars were even better here. I loved having a swing in the back yard and used it every day. We also enjoyed watching the family of pheasants run across the back yard or hang out there. The kitchen is very well stocked. Nice pots and pans. The house is comfortable. It was perfect for the two of us. Lastly, the snorkeling nearby is very good. My most favorite activity was watching the sea turtles come up at night into the tide pools to rest. This happened very close by. We will be back!

It couldn't have been more beautiful

The house is perfect: lovingly furnished, with charm and character, and plenty of space for four people. We were four women seeking peace and relaxation, and that's exactly what we found here. A wonderful garden with a view of Mauna Kea and the sunrise, and a one-minute walk to the ocean for our first coffee. And in the evening, we were able to enjoy the sunset. We enjoyed breakfast on the terrace. Everything we needed in terms of furnishings and kitchen equipment was there, and even more. The contact with the landlord was exceptionally friendly, quick, and reliable. The stay truly exceeded our expectations, and we would come back anytime.Mahalo

About the host

Host profile image
We are empty nesters who enjoy splitting our time between our home here in Puako and our home in the Pacific Northwest. We enjoy skiing and snowboarding which leaves our tropical home to those who wish to escape the colder climates during the late Fall to early Spring months. We enjoy being able to share this sweet little spot with others as an affordable option outside of the resorts. When we are on the Big Island we love spending time in the ocean, diving, surfing, paddling and swimming. The hikes along the coast and other local trails like Pu'u Wa'awa'a Forest Reserve (45 min) are our favorite.

Why they chose this property

We were introduced to Puako almost 20 years ago dreamed of perhaps retiring here. Although still not retired we were able to purchase in the neighborhood many years back and have enjoyed being able to share our home while also coming a few times a year to enjoy it ourselves. It's a non gated community with an eclectic mix of small beach cottages and large multistory houses. One road in and out reduces the traffic flow of a through street so it remains private and quiet. The proximity to the ocean and walking trails is a wonderful draw so we don't have to drive to reach the beach or get in a good walk.

What makes this property unique

The proximity to the ocean and some of the best diving and snorkeling on the island is what makes this place extra special. The west facing coast gives us beautiful sunsets while our wide open eastern view of Muana Kea gives us break taking sunrises. Nestled between four of the top resorts on the island validates what a beautiful coastline Kohala coast is. The appearance of whales from ~Novemenber to ~March is a highlight but the nightly turtles that come up to beach themselves is always a welcome sight. Our simple floorplan with two rooms on opposite ends of the house and a common area in the middle allows for privacy within the house. There is plenty of space on the lanai to lounge as well as a round table that seats six near the BBQ for outdoor dining.
