Alto Lake and Recreation Area is only about a mile away; when you’re not fishing, you can explore the surrounding trails on foot, mountain bike, or horseback. The Links at Sierra Blanca and several other golf courses are just a bit farther. No more than 20 minutes away are the Hubbard Museum of the American West, Ruidoso Downs horse track, Billy the Kid Casino, the art galleries and artisan shops of Sudderth Drive, and Grindstone Lake and Trail System. And in a half-hour you can drive to Ski Apache, the southernmost continually operating ski resort in the country. (Note that because you’re in ski country, during winter a vehicle with 4-wheel drive is highly recommended.)
