Hale Kai means 'Home by the Sea' and sits only 20' from the ocean. Step outside this home onto your own private white sand under the shade of your palm tree garden. Hale Kai sits 32' above the water on a pali and within a few minutes of the house, one can snorkel, swim, scuba dive, hike, surf and kayak and enjoy the pristine beauty of a quiet, serene and romantic ocean side setting. You will love lounging on the shaded and tiled lanai overlooking the Pacific Ocean entertained by the locals... Spinner Dolphins, Green Sea Turtles and Humpback Whales.
You will really enjoy our new Sunset Pool in the downstairs lanai. The pool will help you cool off on those warmer days and provide a wonderful place to watch the sun slide into the ocean while sipping on a Mai-Tai. The all tiled new pool is definitely a game changer!
The Plantation style home has 3000 square feet of breathtaking views from any part of the house and is surrounded by water in three directions and some of the most pristine coral reefs in all the islands. Located conveniently halfway between Kona and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hale Kai makes a great base from which to explore the Hilo and Kona side of the island.
Lulled to sleep by moonlight on the water, Hale Kai will flow into you as you enjoy the moonlight and stars on the water.
Beaches near the Home: 3 beaches lie close to the house. Sea Cave Beach is a 20 minute hike South & hosts a cool sea cave where one can swim. Beyond the sea cave, the beach is about two hundred yards wide & deep. It is a sand & pebble beach & provides great swimming, sunbathing & snorkeling unless there is a large winter swell.
The second beach is at Milolii Beach Park where sand pockets are surrounded by lava & coral to form a very quiet wading area for kids with great swimming, snorkeling & scuba further out. Great place for kids to play in the tidepools. Milolii Beach Park is about a 5 minute drive from the house.
The third & by far the most spectacular beach is located at Honamolino Bay, a 5 minute drive & then a 20 minute walk from the historic yellow church. It has been touted as one of the most beautiful beaches in all the islands. A true tropical paradise, the water is almost always very calm with many coconuts palms along a crescent of black sand.
Location, Location Location: Located conveniently between Kona and Volcano's National Park, this home is a great base from which to explore the island. The lushness of Hilo Town (The City of Orchids) is a beautiful drive through the rain forests of Hawaii Volcano's National Park. The nightlife and restaurants of Kona are less than an hour's drive from the house.
The area is quiet and serene with stunning sunsets and lots of room to explore. The Kings Trail runs through here and can be walked for many miles. The kayaks that come with the house can also be used to explore miles and miles of coastline. Secret beaches, sea caves and lots of marine life can be discovered with a trip either up or down the coast. You will see parts of Hawaii that very few visitors ever see. If you are lucky, the local Spinner Dolphins, Green Sea Turtles and Humpback Whales may choose to swim with you. A once in a lifetime experience!
National Parks Near Hale Kai: Haunaunau National Historical Monument is North of the house about half an hour and features a comprehensive look back into the ancient Hawaiian culture with a reconstruction of the 'City of Refuge'. Watch an outrigger canoe be carved from a single log as well as sea turtles haul out of the bay. Lots of great info in a beautiful setting. A short walk North at a site called 'Two Step' also hosts some of the islands best snorkeling and diving and a chance to swim with dolphins.
Hawaii Volcano National Park is located about an hour's drive East and features one of the only places in the world where one can hike and watch fresh red hot lava waterfall into the sea. Petroglyphs, rainforests, lava caves, a world class visitor center, Hawaii Volcano National Park should not be missed. Guests should easily plan on spending at least a full day here exploring the park and another full day in Hilo hunting out waterfalls and enjoying the Tsunami Museum among other attractions. We want you to have a great time at Hale Kai just like we have over the years and are here to help in the planning process.

The view from this property was amazing! We slept with the windows open and listened to the ocean all night. The kitchen was well stocked with what we needed as well as coolers and beach chairs to use during our day excursions.

This was our second time staying here and the beauty was as we remembered. The location so close to the water is special even though there were huge waves and strong winds while we were there.
Our stay at Hale Kai was absolutely incredible. The view of the water is breathtaking, and falling asleep each night to the sound of waves crashing against the shore was like a natural lullaby. The sunsets were truly spectacular—something we looked forward to every evening. One of our favorite parts of the home was the lanai (Hawaiian-style porch). We spent most of our time there when we weren’t out exploring the island. It was covered, which kept us cool and protected from the sun, and the constant ocean breeze made it the perfect place to relax. We even saw dolphins and whales passing by while sitting out there—such an unforgettable experience! The home itself was perfect for our group of six. The rooms were comfortable and well laid out, and the kitchen had everything we needed. We didn’t use the pool much (just dipped our legs in), but it would be a great option on a hotter day.We also enjoyed exploring the coastline right outside the property, and even had the unique experience of getting fresh-caught fish from a nearby neighbor. The house had great extras like beach chairs, which we used for a day trip and kayaks that we didn't get the chance to use.Mike was fantastic—great communication and he gave us excellent tips on what to see and exactly how to get there, which made our trip even better. If we could have stayed longer, we absolutely would have. We will definitely be back if this place is available again!

Sitting on the moon at the edge of the ocean. Breathtaking is putting it mildly. Spectacular 100%. Enchanting to say the least. There really aren’t enough wonderful things to say about Hale Kai. The location, the stunning views, the only sounds you hear are the waves crashing on the shore, it’s absolutely awe-inspiring. The house is fantastic, open, and airy, yet cozy and inviting. The owner has a wealth of knowledge about the area and some hidden gems to go check out if you’re interested. You won’t be disappointed. Everything was above and beyond our expectations. We hope to come back again and again. Having to leave was the hardest part of our trip. A truly amazing experience. Thank you for sharing Hale Kai with us.

We had such a great time. when some of us wanted to go to the beach and some wanted to stay at the house it went safe and they were content. The house was beautiful and comfortable. We cooked together and there was plenty of room for everyone of the 6 of us.

We are so happy your felt the spirit of "Aloha" we try to imbue Hale Kai with. Mahalo for staying hope to see you back someday!

What a beautiful home overlooking the ocean. You see local fishermen late at night and early morning fishing off the cliffs surrounding the house. Lots of beautiful decorative touches in the house and lots of ocean exposure. Much has been done to maintain the house against the salt corrosion. Peaceful place far from town to relax

Several upkeep items- garbage cans full, microwave did not work, fresh water not refilled, some extremely dirty cooking pans, ran out of paper towels, no extra rolls. House was clean, beds were comfy great location on the water.

We rented this home as a landing spot for our daily excursions. The house is right on the water, so sunsets and dolphin watching was spectacular. We wished there was easier access to the water for swimming and snorkeling, but we were able to get in the water via other beaches.
Left after 3days could not get in touch with manager house was dirty. Manager came to clean after we left.No air conditioning when there was no breeze the heat was too much could not sleep. The barbeque had no propane. The host asked if we came back he would fill the propane tank. Not a good experience.Lost 4 days paid for at a high rate.

I am sorry to say that occasionally we get guests who are simply hard to please. As opposed to what this guest had to say we came in after their complaints and recleaned the house spic and span, made sure there were trash bags and that all the fans were working which they were. We then offered to have them come back but were told they were not interested in returning. They were correct that the propane was out but that was easily remedied. Of course we are sorry they did not enjoy Hale Kai but they did not give us a chance to remedy any aspect of their complaints. As for the AC we don't advertise we have it and never have. The overhead bedroom fans and open windows to the sea do the trick just fine!
Magical and spiritual is the best way to describe the home and surroundings. We had everything we needed and more. Privacy, peaceful, connection and slowing down. Words can’t explain the wonderful experience. Absolutely perfect way to embrace the Aloha spirit! Thank you Mike for helping us slow down to enjoy the beautiful planet we live on.

The Setting makes the property!
The location was tremendous, we loved being on the lava rock/ocean. The upkeep of the home itself was less than desirable. I cannot believe you would rent a VRBO with bathroom water damage in that condition! Alot of holes in screens, could not leave those doors open because of large bugs.

About the host
Hosted by Mike or Jamie Selby
We simply love Hawaii and being on, under and on top of the blue Pacific Ocean. As naturalists we love the water sports and wildlife we encounter on our wild stretch of coast line. We normally live at 7600 feet in the Sierra's and love to ski. Hale Kai provides a nice balance for us from our snow haven where we can play in the water snorkeling, swimming, cliff jumping, surfing, boogie boarding, scuba diving and exploring one of the most beautiful islands in the Pacific.
Why they chose this property
We fell in love with this property and built a home on Makahiki Point because as young newlyweds we swam with Spinner Dolphins near here. They played with us for about 6 hours and when we decided to have kids, we wanted them to share that kind of experience. Well, not only have they shared it but have swam with dolphins and whales many times since then. As art lovers, we wanted a house that was pure artistry and bought local art to fill the walls with color where we could enjoy the property inside and out. Raw, natural and away from all the traffic and sirens of Kona, we just love coming back to Hale Kai after a day exploring either above or below the waterline!
What makes this property unique
You simply can't get closer to the Pacific and keep your feet dry. We proposed and received a special twenty foot, instead of forty foot set back for the house so we can watch fish right off the lanai as well as hear whales breach and let the waves lap us to sleep. As the last house in the subdivision we feel blessed to enjoy unobstructed views of the ocean as far West, North and South as far as the eye can see!
