Great place to stay. Was in Abita Springs for the Fall Fest and chose to stay here. Did not spend much time at the house due to a busy schedule but would definitely come back and highly recommend for a getaway.

Delightful Get-Away

Our family group of five loved our week at Sunhillow Farm! The log cabin was so cute and comfortable, well equipped, and nestled in a beautiful setting, surrounded by a blueberry orchard and deer farm. Our hosts Bill and Karen were so friendly and helpful and surprised us with a number of nice treats. We had a wonderful time and can highly recommend Sunhillow Farm.

Perfect quiet getaway

This was our third stay at Sunhillow Farm, and it certainly won’t be our last. Bill and Karen’s hospitality is unmatched. It’s the perfect peaceful getaway that’s far from town, yet close enough that if you wanted to make the trip into New Orleans it would only take an hour or so. We loved exploring Abita Springs this trip, which is only about 20 minutes away. If a relaxing, peaceful getaway is what you’re looking for, you can’t go wrong with this beautiful place.

Serene

We stayed here during Mardi Gras and it was a perfect place to get away from the hoopla while close enough to enjoy the festivities. One member of our party ended up not being able to go to New Orleans so this gave her a place to relax and recuperate. The deer literally ate out of my son’s hand. I’d love to come back and stay when the blueberries are ready.

Southern Hospitality at it's Finest

Bill and Karen were the perfect hosts going above and beyond to make us feel welcome and giving us suggestions to enhance our family vacation. The accommodations were as described. We had a nice big kitchen and a comfortable living room. Plenty of room outside to relax and enjoy. Feeding the deer was fun and we took advantage of the kayaks and walking trails. The area was very peaceful and quiet.

Bill and Karen were fantastic hosts displaying the best of Southern hospitality in the LA Bayou. Went to ensure all needs were met. Kitchen was stocked with plenty of dishes, silverware and cooking items. Pantry was full of spices and goods. Bedrooms and bathrooms were comfy with plenty of pillows. Definitely recommend!

Great log cabin on private acreage

This log cabin was great, and we would have given the home a 5 star rating if not for the dangerous spiral staircase to the upstairs 2 bedrooms, including the master bedroom suite. The railing on the spiral stairway is 24" above the steps when going down the steps, we would not have stayed had we seen the pictures now available showing the stairway. The property is beautiful, private and quiet and Bill was great to deal with. It is remote and 15 miles from the nearest grocery store and/or restaurant.

Amazing property

Bill and Karen were great hosts. They have an amazing property that is well appointed for any stay. My children fed the deer and loved the interaction with Karen while she was bottle feeding a fawn. Unfortunately we missed the blueberries, but we were gifted and amazing pineapple- blueberry dessert with wine! It was terrific. We were completely satisfied with our stay and I would highly recommend this property for a low key relaxing stay. However if you choose it is only a short drive to New Orleans or Baton Rouge. My advice though if you come during summer be prepared for the insects as they are there.

This place is a HIDDEN GEM!

This place is amazing! When looking for places to stay in Louisiana, this place caught my eye because of not only the deer farm but also the lake with kayaks and canoes; our children range in age from 3-16, so its important for us to have a way for them to swim while we're on vacation, as they all love it. This definitely fit the bill -- there were two kayaks and two canoes, plenty of space for our family of 7 to be able to enjoy the lake and canal each evening. The house was great -- secluded and quiet, with the deer right outside. This is also one of the best stocked VRBO's I've been in -- not only was the kitchen fully stocked, and towels, etc provided, but there were also some basic condiments (jelly, butter, BBQ sauce, etc), and pantry basics, which was a bonus. Highly recommend this VRBO, and if we are ever in Louisiana again, we'll definitely be staying here again!

Swimming in the lake is our favorite and also feeding the deer. Bill and Karen are exceptional host. Thank yall for sharing such a beautiful place with everyone! We are blessed to have the opportunity to spend time at your beautiful property. My grandchildren have great memories of your place especially going in the deer pen and helping to feed the deer!!!!! Thanks again! Sincerely A.R.

OH DEER!❤️

What a wonderful experience! I wanted to give my grandkids, ages 15 and 12, a little get away before starting school. They had an absolute blast, feeding the deer, playing cornhole, basketball, swimming in the beautiful lake and exploring the area. My husband, who is physically challenged was perfectly comfortable. The lift reclining chair was perfect for him. Owners/Hosts Bill and Karen made us feel like family. It was an experience filled with excitement, love and connection. This place is a hidden gem and we will definitely be back next summer. My granddaughter insists on it!!! Thank you so much Bill and Karen for your hospitality!

Easter getaway from NOLA!

We wanted to get away from the city and into nature and boy did we! Words can’t describe how much fun we had exploring the 200 acres of forest! Lakes, ponds, paths, and sooooo many deer! Our son woke up early every morning to feed the deer - when we left, he knew their names….the owners were beyond accommodating!

The Best Way To Recharge!

If you’re looking for a place where you can stay on property the entire time and not see another person the entire stay, OR a place to fill your stay with all the activities you can fit in, this fits the bill. This cabin is our favorite getaway spot and this was our fifth time here. Bill and Karen are the best hosts, and communication with them is so easy. We always come away from our stay relaxed and recharged, and are already ready to come back!

Quiet

Location was about 30 min from most places BUT it is so amazing! The quiet and distance allowed us to see so much wildlife that would never have been seen otherwise. We had an owl visit almost every evening. The property had plenty of space for kids to run and play. The host were so welcoming and gracious! Karen came and walked us into the deer area and feed them “cookies”. She also answered all of our questions.

About the host

Hosted by Bill or Karen Magee

Host profile image
Karen and Bill have been married for 33 years, raising 4 children who have left the nest and the payroll. Bill has retired and they have moved back to the farm to raise chickens, deer and blueberries. We enjoy the outdoors and meeting new guests.

Why they chose this property

I bought this property when I was in college as an original 22 acre property at the end of the road. I added another 18 acres in 1981 and another 350 acres in 1996. After selling some acreage in 1998 we ended up with 220 acres. We met on the property back in 1987 while water skiing. I built the log cabin in the early 80s and converted it to the VRBO unit in 2019.

What makes this property unique

Secluded with no noise, no neighbors and no traffic. You want to get away from it all and enjoy the solitude of nature, this is the place for you. Our chickens provide fresh eggs for your enjoyment while here. You can help us feed the deer if you are here during feeding time. Pick fresh blueberries for your breakfast during the season. In early spring, enjoy the new green growth on the cypress and oak trees and other plants as you walk along the many trails we have. Also in early Spring, watch as the Swallow Tail Kites return from their stay in South America and make their nests on the property. One of the most graceful birds you will ever see soar over the fields and the ponds/lakes. The hummingbirds also return at around the same time. Late April brings the extraordinary display the fireflies put on during their mating season. Literally hundreds of fireflies are found with their glows in sync on certain evenings after dark. Truly an amazing site to see. In mid May through July, the deer are having their fawns which is another exciting time on the farm. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, enjoy the water sports on the waters around the property. Fall brings with it the colors of the cypress and maple trees changing to burn orange and red. As a special treat for those who book stays of 4 nights or more, enjoy a complimentary Blueberry Crostata, Bill's favorite blueberry dessert, topped with Bluebell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream. It's to die for. Also included is a complimentary bottle of wine of your choice. Let us know if you like white or red.
