In 1866 he was given the name of Jean Claude Leupold (1774-1840). He was the son of Jean Jacques Leupold, Swiss-born painter trained in Vienna, Austria, and arrived in Bordeaux in 1766. He became painter to the city, a member of the Academy, and art teacher at Guyenne college. Jean Claude Leupold, distinguished professor of hydrography, and higher mathematics physics at the Royal College of Bordeaux, was received at the Academy in 1798.
