Ocean-Front Home

Beautiful home on spectacular pink-sand beach. Over 3000 square feet under roof, including 850 square feet of shaded porches overlooking the ocean. Breathtaking views. Inside, three bedrooms surround open-plan living area. Two queen bedrooms with ocean views on two sides. Third bedroom opens onto sun deck overlooking beautiful garden area. Fantastic great room provides 400 square feet of living space with views to ocean on three sides. Two seating areas, one facing ocean and other oriented toward entertainment center—all under vaulted cypress ceilings and wooden ceiling fans. Plush sofas, rattan occasional chairs, and double chair with ottoman provide comfortable spots for reading, listening to music, watching a movie, or just gazing out at the ocean. Spacious dining room, kitchen completely equipped for family living, and full laundry room.
Two screened porches provide protected outside living. And best of all, a spacious deck sits atop the dune with commanding views of the beach and ocean.

Great Beach and Water: The pink sand beaches and clear waters of Eleuthera are world famous, and the beach at CaresAway is among the best on the island. The broad, gently sloping beach is a great play area for even young children. Nearby reefs provide walk-in snorkeling and diving opportunities. Hard packed sand is perfect for long walks.

If you would like to look at Google Earth to see the environs of the house, these are the coordinates: 25* 15' 34.77N by 76* 17' 59.50W. You will notice that the sandy beach in front of the house goes out quite a distance into the water for wonderful wading and swimming. This lovely beach is almost encircled by coral reefs, some so shallow that even small children can don a mask and see some lovely little fishies.

Governors Harbour: The historic Bahamian settlement of Governor’s Harbour is a short drive from the house. As its name implies, the harbor is the focal point of the town. Freight and passenger docks occupy the end of Cupid’s Key. A 19th century library with internet room sits on the tree-lined street that hugs the harbor wall, and Victorian houses overlook the sea. Small shops and restaurants provide most anything you may need and a chance to enjoy conch salad, fresh grouper, peas-and-rice—or just a hamburger. Night life centers around The Buccaneer, Tippy’s, Potlatch Club, or 1648 seaside bars and restaurants. Consult our Elusive Beaches of Eleuthera book and explore multiple beautiful beaches within minutes of our house. Or make a day trip to Harbour Island or Spanish Wells and rent a golf cart to explore two lovely but very different villages. Or head south to Lighthouse beach, where cruise ships drop off passengers for a few hours at the beach--but you can spend all the time you want!

The Closest You'll Come To Paradise!

My wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at Cares Away and were very pleased with our stay at this beautiful property. We generally try to find vacation destinations with the best views in areas that are not heavily populated....Cares Away was the answer to both. When we weren't out touring the island, we spent our days enjoying gorgeous views of the water and viewing the horizon-to-horizon stars at night. I totally recommend this property for 1) its host (Sallie is great!), 2) beautifully decorated and fully outfitted house, extraordinary coral-abundant, 3) crystal blue water frontage, 4) easy access to Governors Harbor and 5) very private neighborhood.

Perfect Christmas Holiday

What a lovely way to spend the Christmas holiday! Sallie is a wonderful owner who helped us coordinate grocery delivery as we arrived on Christmas day and knew the shops would be closed. Her caretaker was very helpful and responsive. We enjoyed waking up to the sound of the ocean, snorkeling the private beach, relaxing on the porch swing or hammock with a book and soaking up all that this beautiful island has to offer! The house was spacious and well-appointed, and the location can't be beat! Just minutes from GH town or an easy drive north to Gregory town, we would definitely stay here again! While we did lose internet on the third day of our trip, the house has plenty of VCR movies and board games to keep everyone entertained! Thanks for sharing your beautiful home with us!

A bit of bad luck in paradise

Cares Away is a spacious, well-equipped house with a gorgeous view and a lovely little beach. It is centrally located near Governor's Harbour, our favorite town in Eleuthera. Sallie is a super host-- concerned and communicative. Unfortunately, we encountered a number of problems with the septic system, drinking water, Wi-Fi and TV. Sallie and the wonderful caretakers all worked to fix the issues, but island life over a holiday week moves slowly. If not for these problems, we would have given this house 5 stars.

Beautiful location, poor maintenance

There are pros and cons to this property. We left this rental after a few days once we found another place to stay. Pros: A/C worked great. Nice washer/dryer, beautiful beach. Cons: property is just not being maintained. Rips in the screens, so bugs easily enter. Deck at the dune over looking the water is rotted in many places. Sea-grape trees are way overgrown, you have to duck and watch your step to get to the deck. All but 2 of the beach towels were frayed. Sheets very old. Outdoor cushions all old and mildewed. The property was musty and smelled like we were in an antique shop. Old dead bugs left under lamps and in corners. It could be great, but should not be rented until it gets some TLC.

Wonderful Christmas Stay

Cares away is lovely and beautifully stocked. It was roomy and had a classic indoor/outdoor feel and is perched on top of a bluff with great views. Would consider this for groups of multi generation or two families as well as the bedrooms are nicely spread out. There is room to serve meals both on the porch and indoors which can be hard to find. We really appreciated the host and her team who dealt with my several questions about island life and our travel limitations. We spent a week during a winter storm, so we weren’t able to do any snorkeling or swimming off our beach, but I suspect this was a very rare occurrence. I would say a few things as advice- you need to read about and understand the island, you must rent a car and be prepared to drive maybe 20-40 minutes to explore, call businesses ahead to check if they are open- often are run by one or two people and they need time off and have life events too!- just call ahead. Would bring some bug spray as with all islands and consider booking this property because of the AMPLE screened in space and window screens (made bugs a non issue for us). Then, look at the pics of the stairs, the steps are solid, safe, slightly on the steep side and require about two steps on to uneven rock coming down to the beach. If I had very small children or very elderly guests, I would still bring them but just have someone else with them when taking those last two steps. Certainly I had no concerns about it with our party and the beach is so close to the house -when you come, you’ll just love it. Thank you so much to Sallie and her team for having us. I will 1000% book again and really enjoyed this area of the island, the overall easy going vibes, kind local people and raw nature. Trip of a lifetime even with storm clouds in the sky! Side note- if you get rained out like us, there are enough DVDs and board games to get even our three teens through periods of minimal wifi and cell service and stuck indoors- they all say “movies and games at night” were their favorite part of the visit!

Spacious oceanfront property

Our family stayed here for Spring Break and we really enjoyed this home. The oceanside of the property is spectacular! It’s a private beach, really. The home is well appointed, we had everything we needed. We had a chef come in and prepare a Bahamian meal which was wonderful. The rooms were spacious, it was like being at home. This property was perfect for our family. Highly recommend for your stay in Eleuthera as the location is central on the island and easy to navigate to other areas.

We brought our children for their first visit to the Bahamas. Will stay here again for sure. Everything about the house is amazing. The ride to town is very short. Go eat at Tippy's and Bucaneer's. Very close to all tourist attractions and beaches. Reefs are amazing. The kids loved the paddle board and kayak while my husband and I relaxed on the beach. Sally is amazing. One of the best homes on maybe the best beach we've ever stayed at. This was a family spring break trip, including some friends our kids brought. Everyone was was wowed when they first arrived at the house, and was absolutely stunned at the beautiful scene just out back. The home is spacious and comfortable. The kitchen is well appointed. The grounds are beautiful. And the beach...oh man the beach. Perfect sand and beautiful waters stretching for miles. Good snorkeling straight off shore. And finally the hosts. It is clear that Sallie wants the absolute best stay possible for her guests. All the hosts we've dealt with on VRBO have been good, but she is hands-down the best. Can't say enough good things about how responsive and helpful she is. With Governor's Harbor nearby, you are close enough to everything you need, and far enough to have near total privacy. Seaside Slice of Paradise!

This home is just so lovely. Clearly lived in and created with love and thoughtfulness. The crafty art, decorations and décor make it feel like a home away from home. The beach is great, with so many other options very close by for both Atlantic and Caribbean sides. Secluded paradise

If Eleuthera is your style, this place is perfect. A nice home on a beach with only a handful of houses, with a yard and home that are very private. And the beach is too, since we only saw a couple of people all week on the beach. We stayed a week, and it was incredible. The home is nice, with all the amenities you need, and Sallie's instructions, guidebook, and help were all excellent. It made it so easy to find what we needed on the island (which isn't easy without it). The location of the house itself is central to the island so you can travel north or south, and not too far from Governor's Harbour if you need to resupply. The screened in porches are wonderful when there's a breeze, as is the back porch and yard, depending on the time of day (dusk does generally bring the bugs). The deck is the same, and just serene watching and listening to the ocean. But the real prize here is the actual beach itself. Walk down the stairs to a nice cabana where you can sit and read and listen to and watch the ocean. Or walk right into gorgeous clear water to cool off. And the snorkeling is incredible, so much to see just right behind the house (follow Sallie's instructions for the best spots). We went to several spots on the island, and were so grateful we ended up at CaresAway. It was better than any other spot we visited. And the name is for real, we left all of our cares behind.

Amazing Home on Beautiful Island

This is an amazing home and location on a beautiful island! Great hilltop patio and upper deck looking due east for spectacular sunrises. Secluded, sandy, private beach with plenty of toys for the water. Bedrooms are very comfortable and spacious with views of the water. This was our first trip to Eleuthera and won't be our last. Thank you Sallie & Mike for sharing your lovely home. It was perfect for our group of 5. The location is great and the beach is perfection. This was my 6th visit to Eleuthera and as always, I hated to leave! Cares Away's caretaker IJ is such a kind man. We rented a car from IJ and had a dinner prepared by his wife Rosemary. If you want a delicious authentic Bahamian meal, Rosemary's food will not disappoint! She also baked a beautiful and delicious birthday cake for my daughter. The name says it all...our cares literally melted away from the moment we walked in the door. Can't say enough about this gorgeous spot. We are so happy to have stayed here, and instantly fell in love with both the house and Eleuthera itself. The house is roomy, spacious, and gracious, with the all privacy and amenities you would expect at your fingertips. We found ourselves able to relax on a vacation for the first time in a long time. The beach is beautiful, and practically deserted. The surf provides a constant white-noise backdrop that lulls you into tranquility, and you can hear and feel the breeze while sleeping with the windows open. Outdoor showers to rinse off after a splash in the ocean. Ocean kayaks and snorkel gear provide the mixings for exploring the reefs right offshore. A little piece of paradise

What an amazing property! We are already plotting our return. The 3 bedroom house was perfect for our 2 families as all 4 kids had their own bed in the bunk room. The deck overlooking the beach was great for beach gazing during the day and star gazing at night. The kids were mesmerized by the snorkeling right on our beach and we came home with several conch shells that they discovered in the water. Governor's Harbor was a nice central location to serve as a home base as we explored both ends of the island. 1 hour to the ferry to Spanish Wells. 1.5 hours to Lighthouse beach which is a must see if you travel to Eleuthera. It deserves mention that there is a fun little beach bar that is a short walk across the rocks on the beach, but it's hours are at the whim of the owner. We hope to make it back while this beautiful island remains unspoiled by tourism.

Just go there.

Stop your search and just book it. We've been there twice with our small children. Bring your family... Your kids will eat their vegetables. Your baby will sleep through the night. You and your husband will achieve zen enlightenment through sand and shell meditations. Well, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit but it will be wonderful. The beach is perfect. The house is perfect. The owners are great.

Amazing!!

About the Owners and our Builders
We are Mike and Sallie. We decided we wanted to have a place in Eleuthera about seven years ago. We were determined to find a house where someone had already worked out the kinks and we could just move in and enjoy the beauty of Eleuthera. However, after about a year of looking, we gave up that quest and began to consider buying property and building—at least Mike did (Sallie was a harder sell!). We are retired business people more at home with a briefcase in Manhattan than with a hammer in Eleuthera, a rather different island. Then while we were living in Oxford, England, our Eleuthera realtor called and said he had a beautiful property on a to-die-for beach. Mike flew back and checked things out in a grand total of five hours before being forced to get back on a plane to Miami to avoid a big hurricane that had rather suddenly changed course and was heading straight for Eleuthera. So much for due diligence.

We proceeded to get a local architect, John McCarty, to design a house based on Mike’s preliminary drawings of what we thought we wanted. John not only contributed to the final design but also gave us our first lesson in Bahamas-time. That Manhattan connection made us slow learners, but many months later we had plans that we could use to interview builders and an only slightly better notion of the island time thing.

Several builders talked with us about building the house. It was fun getting to meet them, and we learned a bit about building on the Bahamian “out islands.” Jason Thompson, Teddy Petty, and Mark Kemp all gave us time and ideas, and we really liked them all. However, in the end we chose Whels Construction. Whels is the brainchild of Wallace Sineus and his brothers Elain and Leslie. They are all really fine craftsmen—and great company.

Why they chose this property

'Why this property?' The almost deserted beach, the crystal clear water, the colorful and abundant corals and tropical fish, the lush vegetation. Close enough but not too close to Governor's Harbour. Close enough but not too close to the U.S. and good flights. Enough services (groceries, restaurants, etc.) but no too much bustle. Friendly locals and expats, but not too many. In other words, location location location. AND a great house!

What makes this property unique

Beach time is family time for us. We built and furnished the house so that we have everything our family needs for a relaxed, comfortable, and fun get-away. With the perfect beach and water right at our back door, there is no place we'd rather be. We very much hope that our guests feel the same way!
