About this property
Newly renovated kitchen 2024. Dead end Street, Large Yard, not on a hilltop.
Classic Cottage Style, On the Lake, Nestled in a quant country lane surrounded by woods, tall pine trees, and the beautiful 75 foot stretch of lake front makes this timeless cottage an escape for families, friends and couples. A few things that I must mention to differentiate us for some other locations. The 75 feet of lake front is BIG, so it makes you feel away from it all versus some places that stacked tight with one right next to the other with 50 foot. This cottage is not in a channel, but right on the lake. This cottage is not on top of a steep hill with 70 steps, it is 6 steps down to the lake level. So, if you forget your sunscreen you do not have to go back up the 70 steps to retrieve it. If you like water skiing, wake boarding, tubing, boating, jet skiing, pontoon ridding, fishing, canoeing, grilling out, hiking, swimming, playing cards, bond fires, smores, and relaxing, then the Copper Roof Cottage is for you.
NOTE: PEAK SEASON requires a FULL WEEK to be rented, Fri (5pm) -Fri (noon) May 31-Aug 29. Thks.

Families, Church Retreats, and Businesses: The cottage is perfect for gatherings of families, friends, church retreats, and business team building events that, after the day’s activities, would like to retreat back to their very own comforts of a warm and cozy cottage to watch movies, relax, or snuggle by the fireplace. Take time to visit the Buffalo Preserve. You can also visit an award winning winery with excellent red and white wines available for tasting and purchase. If cars are your interest, you may enjoy two local speedways. You could also take a quick 30-minute drive and enjoy the Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg Museum which houses classic vintage automobiles from the early 1900's up to WW II era vehicles. Or visit the NATMUS Museum which houses vehicles from the post war years. Or visit another flavor of museum --- the Hoosier Air Museum (operated by the Hoosier Warbirds) at the DeKalb County Airport which features aircraft from throughout the history of aviation. Autumn offers an exceptional time...
The Days Events: The children will love exploring the surrounding land, the lakes edge, catching frogs and fish, while you relax in a chair watching with a hot cup of coffee. Latter the kids will go swimming, play on the raft, use the paddle boat, canoe, while you play along with them or take a nap. After lunch is a great time to get in your motor boat and water ski, water tube, hang out at the sand bar, or dock up to the 4h fair grounds to hike. That evening while the sun sets the fire pit is the place to be. Roasting smores, telling stories, enjoying each others company, being warmed by the fire as the children start to realize they are tire. Tuck them in and it is your time to catch up with your honey. How do I know this, I have a lovely wife and triplet children age 8. We have enjoyed this cottage for the last 8 years.

The house was beautiful and had a gorgeous view of the lake. There was a problem with the water pressure so when someone was taking a shower or a bath, there was not any water at any of the other sinks. This was quite a challenge as there were nine people staying in the house. We also had a challenge when we arrived at the house and found a couple inches of snow on the sidewalk and 8 -10 inches of snow on the driveway and additional snow at the end of the driveway from the snow plow clearing the road. I contacted the owner and he said the guy who was to clear the driveway had a problem with his equipment and didn’t get it cleared, but the owner left a shovel for me. At 65 years old, I was not happy to have to shovel the driveway. I wanted to have all of the food and supplies unloaded before the other guest arrived, but I didn’t get it done. The younger men arrived and finished shoveling. The owner did give me a 50 refund for the inconvenience.

Yes, we had a a 2 inch snow, however, the plow doing the street left the pile across the start of driveway if 8”. We have all experienced that in our own subdivision . I am sorry the line of snow was there. The shovel is left there in case of a light snow and somebody wants to shovel. Or in a situation like this. I was able to see the young men doing the shoveling. I did not mean for her to do it. When booking , I had given there group a full day 12 noon early check in as opposed to the 5 PM check in to help her get settled in. I understand Traveling is hard and getting an early star does not pan out sometimes, she showed up after dark. I am truly sorry that she was not able to get set up and snow was on the drive for her family and guests. However, I do think the low score of a two ( never had before) is low when compared to all our other past scores. I wish her the best with future endeavors. Thanks, Steve
We had a wonderful time. We had a family of ni ne swans spending time onthe lake every morning. The beds were really nice as well as the furniture. We will definitely keep it in mind for future visits.
We rented this property for my parents and it couldn’t have been better! The home was very clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. It has a big yard that was great for relaxing and taking in the beautiful lake views. The whole setting felt peaceful and private. Communication with the owner was excellent from start to finish — they were quick to respond and made sure everything went smoothly. We’d definitely stay here again or recommend it to others looking for a quiet lakeside escape.
We spent the weekend at this cottage and were able to host a graduation celebration for approximately 25. There was good space for accommodating a BBQ. Steve was very responsive and the kitchen and bathroom were stocked with needed items. Beautiful view of the lake!
We are so happy the family had a good time! That is what a vacation is all about. We have taken past guest recommendations and have been implementing them. Like… we now do all the sheets and bedding, so Mom can relax. We renovated the kitchen and got a new flat top grill for Dad! Have FUN where ever you go! Steve
Lake home was perfect for us, located conveniently, quiet neighborhood. Perfect for a weekend getaway. Enjoyed our stay!! And thanks for the restaurant recommendations Saturday!!

When I stopped by with a new vacuum and salt bags , Jen’s family and children looked to be having a wonderful time swimming and playing along the lake. I love seeing that. Good times with family and friends is what it is all about. Jen let me know the grill burners were not functioning, so i brought out the spare and bought a new one for the next guests. Our guests feed back is how we know what to fix or improve on. So happy Jen’s family had a good time. Thanks, Steve

Nice place to stay
We rented for the first time this summer and really enjoyed our stay. The cottage was easy to find and in the "calm" 3rd basin of Crooked Lake. It has a lovely backyard, and we enjoyed our time using the back patio. The cottage was clean with plenty of room for our family. We would stay again!
Thanks for the nice complement. Yes eight years in a row of renting both of our lake cottages. This is a wonderful family, who has been coming up to our cottages and building great memories. We are so happy for them. Thank you Steve
It was the perfect place to get away for a weekend and rent a pontoon. Having a new baby in the family makes it very hard to travel anywhere safely. This gave us the opportunity to remember what is important in our lives. FAMILY. It was quiet and the recommendation to rent a boat was so easy. THANK YOU. It is just what we all needed.

Lee, So nice to hear you had a good time.
I would like to say we appreciate the feedback good or bad from our guests. Our customers are our eyes and ears, which makes them the experts we want to hear from. Please keep the reviews coming.
I wanted to respond to your issues after I had a chance to get them corrected. After our conversation, I decided to stay at the cottage to get a better feel for the customer’s experiences. I also reached out to past renters and our repeat renters for their feedback. Here are the improvements to address the feedback items: A major complaint has been “Doing The Laundry”. I agree, laundry after a vacation is no fun! So… We have upgraded to “No Need To Do The Laundry”, as we now have a service that handles it. Also, “No Need To Clean “. What? Yes… you heard it… “No Laundry and No Cleaning”. We still ask you and your family to leave the cottage as you found it, -picked up and everything in its place, dishes completed, trash out, and refrigerator emptied. We will manage the rest. Also, if we allowed you to have a pet, we still require you to clean up after your dog and please remember pets are not allowed upstairs.
We now made the check in and out process effortless and hands off. We added new keyless entry doorknob, back up keys new lock box, and outside lighting for late arrivals to see the pad keys in the dark.
Wait… We have done more from the feedback… We bought 2 new recliners, 1 new sofa love seat, and 1 new large “L” sofa for the large family room so more family members have a place to sit together for Movie Night. We increased the size of the main TV; in family room to go along with the increased seating in the main family room for Movie night… We removed the TV and stand that blocked the picture window view of the lake, so now you can see all the lake activities from the 2 new reclining chairs.
Here are additional improvements that were not in the complaints. We Renovated the kid’s bedroom #3 for more space and their own private hang out. This completes the renovations of all three Bedrooms. We installed 5 new ceiling light fixtures and installed 2 new ceiling fan light fixtures.
On the exterior patio we installed mood decorative lighting, which really adds a quaintness to the night while hanging out. The fire pit has increased in size.
We believe our improvements will make everyone’s stay more relaxing and comfortable. Please feel free to text or call me with any other suggestions too.
Thanks, Steve

Great boating. Nice house.
Crooked lake is a dream for boating and watersports! This house is in third basin where the water calms quickly for skiing or barefooting and there is a slalom course too. First basin has a sandbar which is fun to party on. The beach by the house is nice for about six feet into the water, then is a little mucky and has seaweed, but it was plenty nice for the kids to play in the sand and water. The house is a little older but nice, lots of white noise with the air conditioners running and seemingly well insulated as the kids could sleep upstairs and didn't hear a thing from the adults downstairs. We had a great time and had no complaints!

I am happy our guests had a great time. We will be renovating the exterior and portions of interior this winter. We will be adding sand to the swim area to increase the sandy bottom area. We take renters suggestions and make improvements every year. From a suggestion, this spring we extended the dock with platform on the end.
Thanks, Steve

Unsafe and worn out
I waited to get my deposit back to write this review. I walked into a cabin that had the gas stove running full blast and a coffee pot on next to it.. should have called the police but tried to reach the owner who was out fishing. Delayed having my daughter in law and son and one year old from arriving until I felt it was aired out. the home had not been cleaned .. washed the floor and counters before they arrived.. missed one day of rental. The rug is torn and dirty..these are old pix on their website and they had so many overloaded circuits with cheater etc that I unplugged all the old tvs etc that they had plugged in. There are digger wasps all around the home.. called about it because I am epipen allegic.. the response was a wasp spray left at the door.. Most of the lights had burned out and toilet seat was broken. Called the maintenance guy. pleasant but does not do stairs or bend so my husband replaced the seat and all lights. I never felt safe here.. duct taped the stove handles.. no safety so no little hands could turn and was stuck with a microwave for all our cooking. The owner never made an appearance to amend or apologize.. The outside is covered with spiders and webs and just a quick power wash could have ammended that.. this home is unloved and unsafe. The lake is nice in this area but a promised beach for toddlers had totally washed away.. raked some sand that way to make it safer but not as in the picture. Please note all photos are from much earlier as are the reviews. Also beware of the contract. I tried to cancel this reservation more than 90 days prior after I visited the site... the contract does not allow refund of your sizeable deposit at any time. I felt stuck with the place and tried to make do because I could not afford to lose so much money. I am a fool for not just walking out but had family members counting on this holiday. The neighbors thought that the previous renter was terribly upset and left on Thursday.. probably leaving the gas on.. the owner said they left an hour before I arrived but I am not convinced with the amount of gas in the home. Just Beware and try to visit before you commit.

Hi, I am Steve the owner of the Lake Cottage.
After careful consideration, I decided to respond to this review. I was very disheartened to get a review like this. My father and I try really hard to make everyone’s stay as safe, comfortable, and enjoyable as possible. We take the corrective comments very seriously and address what we can that day with our repairman, cleaning service, and other local services. My father and I improve items from feed back from our guests and our repeat guests.
We tried many times to satisfy this renter. I dispatched the cleaning service (only 1/8” mile away) 4 times to the cottage to address the needs of this renter. We purchased and delivered kitchen items for this renter. We replaced a few burned out light bulbs, replaced a toilet seat, child proofed the back screen door, and listened to concerns. We also had an exterminator review and later dust treated the bees in the yard, there were no bees in or on the cottage. The photos on the web site are accurate.
After many efforts were made, I feel this review is unfair and unreasonable. We have rented our lake cottage for the past 8 years and have not had an unfavorable review. We also have many repeat guests, so we must be doing something right.
I feel bad our lake cottage did not meet this particular lady’s high expectations. I assure you, we will continue to always value guests feed back, so we can continually make needed improvements. We have many repeat guests, so we must be doing something right.
Thank You, Steve & Don Just
The cottage was a terrific place for our family’s visit to Angola. We had a great time inside and outside of the house. The cottage is cozy, welcoming, clean, family friendly and dog friendly. It has great WiFi access, which was very helpful since I barely had signal. The outdoor area is a very good size for kids to play and a dog to run around, a dock to fish from, a little firepit, and a bonus was finding big outdoor toys for kids. The cottage also has a cozy fireplace, a nice game seating area and my favorite - a great big window seating area to read and stare out at the lake in a cozy environment on cooler/cold days. The only issues we found were substandard cookware (but I find this at most seasonal rentals due to wear & tear), non-working appliances (2x blenders did not work), and metallic/rusty tap water. The owner has a water cooler so drinking water is available. These were not deal breakers for us, especially since drinking water was provided. Based on previous reviews, you can tell the owner has really taken the feedback and applied it, showing that they care about their guests’ experiences. It was not peak season, so it was quiet and calm during our visit. We really loved it and are definitely planning to try to book it in future visits.

Elizabeth, thank you for such a constructive / good feed back review. I really appreciate it. I’ve since removed the two broken blenders and will replace them with new. Yes, the lake cottage has well water which has a lot of iron in it. We installed a water softner, which has improved it but it is still well water. Thanks for understanding and appreciating the 5 gallon drinking water dispenser. So so happy the kids found the toys in outside toy box and were able to play with them. That makes me smile. Please come and stay with us again! Thanks Steve
What a beautiful location and property! We had a nice two day stay at the lake cottage with our dog Joe. Didn't get on the lake with the canoes that were available but nice that they are available. A few updates would be nice to improve a future stay in the cottage. Bath towels and face cloths were more like rags than something you'd use at home. The two recliners in the front room need to be replaced because they are broken. We also wondered why there was a big screen tv in the room overlooking the lake? It totally ruins the view. The cleaning expected before leaving in the morning is unreasonable. I realize they are trying to keep the cost down but when you're getting up early to leave you don't want to have to worry about vacuuming and doing the laundry. The washing machine took so long that we never had a chance to finish the load. The bed was comfortable and all in all our stay was wonderful and I'd stay again!

Pretty Setting right on the Lake.
I have always had fantastic experiences with VRBO. Sorry this one had multiple issues, from check in, the key in the lockbox did not work so we were trying to reach the owner but almost no cell service, so this took a while, we contacted the next door neighbor for help , the water pressure being a big problem, especially on checkout day. The cleaning is very extensive, woke up early to Wash all the sheets! Yes we were asked to launder the sheets, but the water pressure was so slow it took 2 hours for one load, and even had to remove them from the dryer before they were dry to leave by our 11:00 check out. In the meantime we couldn’t shower, wash the dishes or flush toilets. This was a bad ending,
Everyone was frustrated .
The bathroom door upstairs did not shut tight so we braced a chair in front of the bathroom door which didn’t really work out,
The slats at the top of the stairs are at least a foot apart, any child could fall straight down the stairs. I would not stay at this property again.
Way too much cleaning, even had to vacuum and clean toilets, showers and sinks. Sorry, charge more for a cleaning fee, Way too much to do when you are trying to pack and leave. Lastly, only one couch in the Adult Living Room, Not enough seating !! I hate being negative but if I had known any of these issues I would have rented somewhere else.

We enjoyed family time and the quiet and beautiful lake location. House provided accommodations for all.

It is nice to hear you had a good time.

About the host
Hosted by Steve or Amy Just
Hi, I am Steve Just, Mechanical Engineer from Purdue University. I was born, raised, and my family lives in Fort Wayne, Indiana. My wife, Amy, and I have 3 children (triplets) age 25 now. We have been married for 30 years and dated in high school and through college. We have a miniature schnauzer named Lucy Lick’ems. Our children love to play at the lake cottage and have for years ever since they were 1 years of age. I pride myself on communicating and answering yours and your family’s questions as soon as possible. We are the owners, so you are not working though a 3rd party. Please feel free to call me anytime. There are so many properties I am sure you have looked at on line, so let me help you where I can. I am sure your family will appreciate you taking the time to pull this together, it is not easy. Let me help you by making this process as easy as possible. Thanks, Steve Just.
Why they chose this property
We choose this property, because the land is spacious with most lake fronts having 75 feet frontage, so you have more privacy then cottages that are spaced closer to one another. We love the town of Angola. Not on top of a hill with 70 steps to the lake. Not in a channel. Plenty of parking space. The neighbors are nice, the street is quite, the dead end street is safe for little ones and pets, and the cottage is large enough for a good sized family and friends. Comes with free use of row boat, paddle boat, and canoe to share with cottage next door.
What makes this property unique
I have a person I work directly with to rent pontoon boats. I love it when persons call me as I think it is important to answer all of your questions on this property , the lake and the surrounding area. Also, If you live near Angola, I encourage you to drive to our lake cottage and the surrounding areas to shop for the cottage that best fits your families wants to your budget. I usually can arrange to let you in. I encourage you to go and compare , because 4 out of 5 families that visit our cottages in the area end up renting our cottages; as they see it as a good fit and value. Thanks, Steve
