About this property

Mush Room at SunRay Shire

Welcome to the SunRay Shire home of SunRay Kelley and Bonnie Howard. We are natural builders and our homes have appeared on MTV Cribs, Home and Garden Channel, in New York Times and Lloyd Kahn’s books Builders of the Pacific Cost and Tiny Homes.
We have hosted many travelers from all over the world in the unique structures on the land. The country quiet is only 10 minutes to the quaint town of Sedro Woolley and 15 minutes to city of Mount Vernon, home to the Lincoln Theatre and many excellent restaurants.
This rugged 9 acre property has walking trails, mountain views, gardens, apple orchard and many examples of handcrafted, sculptural homes and structures.
The Stump House ID#1541586 and Mush Room ID#1541712 are adorable little cold water cabins set in a stand of giant fir and cedar trees. Each cabin overlooks a different trout pond. Each cabin has electricity, cold water sink, tea station and wood fired heat in addition to electric heater November through April. The cabins each have a comfortable double bed. The Stump additional has an easy chair that fold out into a small single bed to accomodate a child or third guest. Bring your rain boots fall through spring as the trails get wet and muddy.
Guests are welcome to use and socialize in the beautiful outdoor kitchen located in the apple orchard. The cabins share an outdoor, composting toilet and outdoor shower house. The rustic nature of our property is not for everyone but those who are looking to unplug, reconnect with nature and enjoy whimsical creations will not be disappointed. If you have mobility issues our property is not a good choice for you as the parking area is at least a 100 yards away from the cabins and requires a walk down an earthen trail.
We are blessed to live in the forest on Cultus Mountain in North Western Washington. The trees, mountains, clean water, earth and air nourish us body and soul. Come breathe, relax and walk in the beauty of nature. Blessings to all from SunRay and Bonnie!

FYI: November to April wood fire is required in addition to the electric heat to keep the cabins warm and cozy. Wood fire heat takes time to start and to heat the cabin. To make your winter stay warm and comfortable good communication with us about your arrival time is essential!
Let us know your ETA, at least by the morning of your arrival, so we can schedule a fire starter for your cabin. Please update us if your plans change and confirm your arrival time when your GPS says you are 60 minutes away to have your fire lit and cabin cozy warm for your arrival.
Because guests are so frequently late we do not start your fire until you have messaged confirming your gps time of arrival when you are an hour away.

Magical Getaway

We loved staying here! We rented both the mushroom cabin & the stump house. We brought our 1 year old little guy & he had so much fun wandering around under the apple trees & spending time in the woods. We made dinner in the outdoor kitchen, walked around the property & enjoyed the amazing nature. The kitchen is stocked with pretty much everything you need to cook! Bonnie is an amazing host & we even got to meet her son - he was so sweet, too!!

We will definitely be coming back!!

The Mush Room was everything we hoped it would be and then some! Bonnie was super nice and helpful, and the property is absolutely magical! We enjoyed the sauna, woke up to tea and coffee by the trout pond, and explored along the paths to see all the unique buildings that dot the landscape. Can’t wait for our next trip out here!

delightful getaway

We had a wonderful time at Sunray Shire! The Mushroom cabin was a cozy retreat, with a big wood stove and a comfy bed. We loved waking up under the glass dome and seeing the light come through the forest, and falling asleep to the sound of the waterfall. Lots of hiking/biking nearby, and it's fun to wander the property (so many whimsical creations). The outdoor kitchen had everything we needed to make delicious meals and we enjoyed crossing paths with the other guests while cooking. Bonnie (the host) is lovely and made sure we had everything we needed!

Magical

This place is absolutely magical and Bonnie is just wonderful! The story and architecture is beautiful. We had so much fun exploring the property and enjoying the fish ponds and all the nature that surrounds. We made friends with the kitties that roam the property, and sat with the bees for a time. After leaving my husband keeps asking me how he can beat this, how can he "repay" me for finding such an amazingly magical place to stay. I find some gems, but this place takes the cake! 10 out of 10 will stay again and again!

Amazing rustic experience

This was the cutest little cabin. Definitely just for 2. I didn't read the description well and packed way more then i needed. The room doesn't have any kitchen, every thing is inbthebshared kitchen up the hill so keep this in mind while packing. It was beautiful and serene. Id Definitely stay here again.

You wont find anything like it

This this for the adventurers. The ones who create. The ones who build. The ones who imagine. The ones who seek. This isnt for those who throw their money at a getaway or a cruise. This is for the people who can appreciate serendipity. The ones who find their soulmate because of mutual passion and special interests. This is a one of a kind, cant be replaced, cant be duplicated, shared from the soul, place.... im honored to have been a part of that.

A hidden treasure that quiets and inspires the mind

We are so blessed to have gotten to experience this little slice of heaven on earth. We stayed for two nights and left with a lot peace, joy, and memories. There is so much love, creativity, beauty, and spirit here. Thank you to the hosts for the care and hard work it takes to keep everything so magical. We appreciated the fresh flowers, complementary coffee/tea, fun artistic details, and being provided with requested comforts (e.g. fan). Having kitty Madrona hang with us was the cherry on top too. We will be back! Some suggestions: Use real mattresses (the bed was a cushion and extremely uncomfortable). Add additional privacy (e.g. real curtains in cabin for daytime modesty, higher walls/doors for compost restrooms). Create a property map to let guests know where trails lead and other areas open to exploration. Make safety improvements (e.g. More light on the trails, repair rotting wood steps, bridges, and hand rails). Create a website that features the history and artistic process of all the buildings.

Skinny dipping host and loitering neighbors

My spouse and I came here inApril and had no issues. In fact we thought it was such a unique place that we were excited to bring our kids back so they could run around and explore the grounds and treehouse. Atahings were odd almost from the get-go. The 70 something year old male host decided to skinny dip in the pond right in front of my kids! He then did the same thing the following day! It was super uncomfortable and inappropriate, my kids didn’t need to see his old man dangler. Also, random neighbors from the area kept wandering through the property and hanging around our private cabins for no apparent reason. One guy brought his dog to play fetch. The bathroom is also outdoors, which would be fine if not for all the random people milling about. We did not feel safe letting our kids run around as we’d intended. We will not be back, which is a shame.

The property was absolutely magical! Was much better to witness in person… pictures definitely don’t do justice. Was greeted upon arrival by Bonnie & a resident kitty & shown to our cabin. Was just the peaceful experience we needed. We also enjoyed the companionship of the resident kitties. Had a great time utilizing the outdoor kitchen. Everything was situated & decorated with perfect detail. We will most definitely return for another getaway!

Dream come true

Fairy tale structures with a connection to nature. The Mushroom was cozy and the bed very comfortable. The smell of cedar so lovely! We had everything we needed with the community kitchen and games. We played cards and corn hole. They even had hula hoops. There was a two seater composting toilet near our place and three flushing toilets up by the community kitchen and apple orchard. We even saw three deer having a nice apple meal! Great visit!

Growing Up In The Cascade Mountains Of Western Washington SunRay Developed A Profound Love Of The Trees.
Over The Last Forty Five Years He Has Developed An Organic Style Of Round Pole Timber Framing That Celebrates The Beauty Of The Natural Forms Around Him. SunRay Uses His Architecture To Reconnect People With Nature And Their Own Playful Imaginations So They May Expand What They See As Possible.

Why they chose this property

My property is part of my Grandfather Janicki's original homestead. Grandma and Grandpa were Polish immigrants. My Mother moved with Grandpa and Grandma to Western Washington from Chicago in 1920. She was the oldest of 10 children and was the first one in her family to speak English. The old growth cedar trees had been logged from the property when my Grandfather bought the land. I grew up on Cultus Mountain playing on those big old growth stumps, climbing trees and building forts in the woods. I never lost my love of doing those things.

What makes this property unique

Quiet, beautiful, and whimsical!
