About this property

Riverview Cottage on the New River

Come and have a relaxing getaway at our cottage located on the historic New River with picturesque Grayson County VA as your backdrop. Whether you are looking for a romantic get away, family vacation, relaxation away from the hustle and bustle, or an outdoor adventure, our house on the New River is the place for you! Be sure to bring your fishing gear and take advantage of some great small mouth bass or try your luck at a musky! Located on a working cattle farm that has been in our family for generations, your closest neighbors may be a few cows grazing in the pasture or a couple laying chickens running around. The wrap around front porch is a great place to take in the beautiful views of the New River or just sip coffee as you watch the sun come up (or set for you late sleepers).

The cottage is fully furnished with linens and towels provided. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you would need to cook in or you can take advanatage of some of the great restaurants in the area. A gas grill is provided to help you enjoy those great summer evenings as you get dinner ready.

Access to a large private river lot comes with the cottage and is within a short walk or can be driven to (weather permitting).

Check in is at 4:00 pm and check out is at 10:00 am.

Pets are welcome as long as they are under control and are good with other animals. A $40 pet fee will be charged per visit for up to two pets. An additional fee of $25 per pet after that will be charged. As mentioned above, the cottage is located on a working cattle farm and the adjoining pastures may have cattle in them when you visit.

Inflatable tubes (4) are provided with the house for some lazy day floating on the New River along with Corn Hole Boards for the competitive folks. We also have an outdoor fire pit to help you enjoy those late evenings soaking up the peace and quiet with a few marshmallows. Additionally, 2 bikes are provided if you prefer to take a scenic ride along the river.

Other Area Attractions:
Our cottage is located within a short drive of many of the areas natural attractions including, Grayson Highlands State Park, Mt. Rogers (Highest peak in VA), The Virginia Creeper Trail, The New River Trail and Matthews State Park. All of these areas are great for hiking, mountain biking, or horseback riding for you outdoor adventure enthusiasts. You can also check out the areas rich musical heritage via The Crooked Road Music Trail, The Blue Ridge Music Center, and the Galax Fiddlers Convention.

We loved our weekend away at the cottage! My partner and I loved spending time in the rocking chairs, watching the water beetles on the river, and stargazing by the fire pit. We stopped next door at the Shoal Creek Horse Adventures and had a wonderful time with the horses. We are definitely considering returning for a future visit.

New River Farm House

2nd time staying. Another wonderful couple of days. Exceptionally quiet and as close to off grid as my wife likes. Enjoyed the farm so much. Took binoculars and watched the wild life come out every evening. I caught 1 fish this time, but that was enough.

Wonderful place to stay!

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at the cottage; it was exactly as described and wished we had been able to stay longer. Sitting on the porch with a view of the river, watching eagles and other birds after a long day of travel and hiking was the perfect ending of each day. We enjoyed meeting and chatting with the owner. The location is not far from Stone Mountain or Grayson Highlands. Would highly recommend staying here if you want a peaceful, relaxing stay!

Great Christmas gathering cottage

Perfect house on the New river! We loved the location and the house was large enough to accommodate our Christmas family gathering. The deer, geese and chickens next door were great. The host was awesome and the the bread and jam were a nice touch. We would highly recommend this property and plan to return.

Lovely weekend

We sat on the porch and took in the gorgeous view of the New River. The owners were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the homemade bread and jam they made for us. We had lots of room to visit with family and friends. Our pup had a great time exploring the property. All around wonderful weekend - will definitely come back 😊

Great get away

I planned a get away with my wife and our kids on four legs. What a quiet and relaxing time. Everyone was so inviting and friendly to the property. Peaceful respite

The charming authenticity of the cottage is something we don’t see every day. It felt like stepping back to a simpler time, but with all the modern day conveniences we have come to need. We loved sitting on the porch looking over the hay field and river, waking up to birds chirping, and seeing cows in distant pastures. The owners couldn’t have been more hospitable and we can’t wait to our next visit!

Wonderful Fall Getaway

My husband, daughter and I stayed at the cottage with our Lab. The property and scenery is beautiful, especially with the Fall color. Access to the river is just a short walk up the road. The cottage is charming, had everything we needed during our stay and was warm and cozy on the chilly windy days. The location isn't far from outdoor activities and several small towns. It was great to meet Mary and learn a little history of the property. She and her family were so friendly and helpful - even giving us an assist when we had car trouble. We look forward to staying there again.

Mountain Get a way

Second time staying at this house. It is in an amazing location for fishing and just enjoying the New River. The fact there is a river launch point about 1.5 miles upstream makes it perfect to launch float and or fish back down to the house. In 3 days I caught over 60 smallmouth bass doing just that and lost a huge Musky. My family including my daughter and her friends all in their 20's love just hanging by the river or floating it on the inner tubes the hosts provide. The hosts are very nice people and provide homemade bread and Jam to all occupants. Need I say more Cant wait too return!

Clean, well- maintained, spacious and comfy. Me, my wife and little yorkie felt right at home. Felt good farm vibes and I enjoyed just watching the river go by and remembering canoeing down that river more years ago than I have toes and fingers. The kind of hosts you hope for and are grateful for. Would definitely come back as lots of Mother Nature blessings are within easy reach along with a friendly real coffee shop in town. Three very satisfied visitors.

Owner & family are super nice! Our stay was fine but we won’t stay again. :( It’d be helpful for families to understand the layout of the home before deciding to stay. In order to access the 1 bathroom, you have to walk through either of the 2 bedrooms. There is no central air which is fine, except one of the listed sleeping spaces has no window fan or ceiling fan so it was extremely hot. The provided fan (after asking) was tiny & didn’t fit the outlets. The ac unit in the 2nd bedroom crackles & disrupts sleep. The kitchen was missing some key items for simple cooking. And it’s good for families to understand that access to the river is not directly across from the house. It’s down the road. The trundle bed in the living room is super squeaky. Finally, I don’t think the house was cleaned by a professional. The owner is super nice so I’m sure the family does the cleaning but given the cost, it’s disappointing to find left over hairs, etc. So it wasn’t terrible but if we had known some things we wouldn’t have stayed there.

Perfect getaway

Myself, my son, and our two year old Dalmatian lab stayed a long weekend and we had the most fabulous timeThe views were spectacular. Little slice of paradise

Our visit to Independence was the third to SW Va. over the last three years, the others being Hillsville and Dugspur.This property checks all of the boxes if you are seeking a getaway from the big city. We enjoyed the silence, with nothing other than birds and the distant sounds of the New River to listen to.The town of Independence has a couple of restaurants, including Ciro’s Pizza, where we had excellent pizza and a calzone. Top notch !The communications with the property owners was excellent(thanks Lyndsie),and we had the pleasure of meeting her husband Darren who was super nice and personable.We will be back, as we barely touched the surface of all there is to do and see in this beautiful part of Virginia.
