About this property

10 Star River Front Retreat - Water Sports, Hiking, Campfires by the River

Riverfront Home 2 Bed/2 Baths, River sports, 4 acres, PETS Ok
This house sits directly on the New River and has 4 acres on the N.C. and Virginia state lines. The New River is at it’s widest part here at over 300 ft. and is quite different from the nearby Little River, which indeed is little. In the summer it is 10-15 degrees cooler than the rest of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, ie Asheville, N.C. since it gets it’s weather pattern from Canada rather than the South. Stroll the grassy river walk alongside the New River. Enjoy the COOL weather. Close to Sparta, NC and Independence, VA and the Blue Ridge Parkway with the historic New River in the front yard. You can kick back on the porch, listen to the tinkling brook that runs directly beneath the open-air deck with it’s soaring cathedral ceiling, and watch the sun go down over the river. In the Fall enjoy a roaring fire and very comfortable furniture in jewel of a cabin. This two-story, post-and-beam house sits on 4 pristine acres of woods, directly overlooking the New River. Though relatively compact at 1,600 square feet, the house has four distinct sleeping areas, including two generous bedrooms, each with a queen-sized bed; the main bedroom also has a pullout chair that makes into a twin sized bed. There is a charming children's alcove with a small pull out love seat in the second bedroom. In the living room (with stacked-stone fireplace) overlooking the river, there is a large convertible sofa. You can also relax and nap on the two adjoining side and front porch and deck.

The modern kitchen with built-in island has windows overlooking the woods and ferns in back of the house; a separate dining room overlooks the river. Both the house and it’s kitchen are fully furnished and linens are provided.

Outside, the immediate surrounds are lushly landscaped with willows, raspberry bushes, silky dogwoods, and roses. Behind the house is a meadow and wooded hillside home to abundant wildlife including geese, hawks, deer, wild turkey, fox, and beavers.

Perfect for families, individuals, or small groups wanting to get away from it all.

Ten miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway, the property is close to the VA state line, about 30 miles north of I-77 on U.S. Hwy. 21. Neighboring settlements within driving distance include Sparta, NC (good groceries, fun shops downtown, and a handful of restaurants), and Independence, VA (quaint courthouse, great grocery store, compact downtown good for an afternoon stroll).

Come for a quiet peaceful retreat or if you prefer, get active and hike, fish, canoe or kayak the river; in warm weather, you'll want to go tubing and swimming in the clear cold water. Blue-grass festivals and local artists abound; junk stores and antiquing are there for those so inclined; and some very fine potters have set up shop in bohemian-style settlements nestled in the rolling farmland outside Sparta.

Great Getaway!

The property was listed as described. We felt right at home. The house was very clean. The river access is perfect. The porch with the creek running under is so relaxing. The gate on the porch is also a nice touch for pets. Host left details about getting to the property and check-in and out was a breeze.

Peaceful paradise

Enjoyed special days with significant other and close friend at this beautiful mountain home. The house was exactly as described - we enjoyed time in the river including some kayaking and fishing. Our dogs were in heaven as well and we all loved the views from the porch and the sounds from the babbling brook. Extremely well-kept and comfortable. Hosts were exceptional communicators and made the stay especially welcoming.

Peaceful cabin

Me and 2 of my kids have rented this property in the past, new owners have made some improvements which I enjoyed. The price is more than comparable properties but I rented here because I was familiar. Clean and comfortable.

Clean, cozy cabin

Our family enjoyed five nights at the cabin over the July 4 week. My husband grew up in the town just to the north, and we visit every summer and have stayed all over the area. This cabin is surprisingly spacious for a small square footage, and we spent tons of time on the deck. The driveway to the riverfront is very steep but well maintained. Our stay was quiet, relaxing, and low maintenance. We definitely took advantage of all sleep spots. For this area, it's super close to a big, recently re-done grocery store and lots of little shops (ice cream, pizza, etc.) as well as hiking and river adventures. Highly recommend.

Great Get-Away

The cabin is absolutely stunning with a wonderful little brook running right underneath. Great place for hanging out (reading, watching the river, etc) and 30 minutes away from state park hiking and other activities. For kayaking on the river, the nearest public take out point is pretty far downstream so plan carefully. Just two downsides, the shower handle upstairs broke while we were there, and there was very little water pressure during showers or washing dishes. All in all, a wonderful place for a very reasonable price.

Wonderful Cabin on New River

Wonderful cabin overlooking the New River. Very well maintained and so comfortable! Beautiful stacked stone wood fireplace. Kitchen well stocked with good pans and utensils. Looking forward to visiting in warmer weather to enjoy large porch and deck above river with creek running underneath! The stars in the night sky were magnificent! We are so happy to have found this gem of a property. Buck , the owner was most helpful and we so appreciated all of the info that was provided. Thanks so much for sharing your cabin!

Perfect place for our family!

Absolutely love this place. CLEAN, private, right on the New River and the owners, Charlie and Jill were wonderful to deal with. Answered any questions we had as quick as possible. Very accommodating. We took our kayaks with us and spent our days playing and fishing in the river. The covered porch was great to relax on and the sounds of the water running underneath was an added plus. We definitely plan to return in the future. Thank you for providing a wonderful place for others to enjoy!! Also, the 11am checkout is very appreciated. Others have a 10am checkout…that extra hour does matter. THANKS again!!

Gorgeous property, relaxing stay

I have been looking for a long time for just the right spot on the New River, which is one of my favorite places on earth, and I think we have found it. The property is at the end of a road and extremely private, and the river is just gorgeous here. There are acres of land to hike through and a hilltop view that is incredible. Buck and Alice are the best of hosts and very responsive. The house itself is quite pleasant - not luxurious but suited our needs. The kitchen is well equipped and the internet worked well when we followed the instructions. We really enjoyed the sound of the little waterfall while laying in the hammock on the covered porch in the rain. And our dog enjoyed the trip so much that when we got home and she realized where we were, she got back in the car and didn't want to come out.

Charming River Cabin

We had a great Thanksgiving with our family at the River Cabin near Sparta/Independence. The cabin was warm and cozy and the setting was really pleasant near the river. It was pretty cold, so we did not use the outdoor porch or firepit, but those features would be really nice in warmer weather. The kitchen was well appointed and we did cook while there. Adding to prior reviews, some observations that may help future renters... we did not use the little room off of the second bedroom. It was cold in there and the fouton was too hard as a bed. Better to leave it a couch. Of note, they did have a blow-up mattress for that area that we did not use. In the Master, they had a pull out loveseat that worked well for our third child. Serta, and super comfy. Noted the brand as I might get one! Loved that. There are two showers, no tubs. ( Important to note for parents with little kids, or bath people.) Water pressure was good and lots of warm water. The biggest issue for us were the lack of blinds or curtains in the bedrooms and bathroom. With no foliage on the trees, we could see three houses from our windows which made us uncomfortable. Parking was a little dicey as the road is gravel and steep. We followed the owner's instructions to get up the hill in our mini van and it worked fine. After unloading, we parked the van down below and walked up for the remainder of the trip. The Cabin is charming, nicely built and appointed. I recommend it for a peaceful getaway.

Be prepared for the perfect location

In November 2020, we realized we hadn’t been on vacation since 2016 because we hated leaving our dog. Thus the search for a pup friendly house right on New River began. We found Charlie and Jill’s house and booked a week in June and another week later in the summer. We figured if the house and river frontage didn’t live up to the descriptions, we could cancel the August week. Within 15 minutes of getting there, we knew August would definitely happen! We live in the country so we are used to privacy, but this retreat, takes it up a notch. Imagine yourself sitting on the side of the wraparound porch, first thing in the morning, coffee in hand, a cozy throw on your legs. There is a constant breeze stirring the leaves and blowing your hair. The river flowing, the babbling brook and birdsong are the only “noises”. It will feel like your bones are melting from relaxation. Throughout the day, we returned to this shady oasis. I was struck by the fact that the soaring porch rafters had ZERO cobwebs. I could relax without the worry of a spider dropping down. Our dog LOVED sitting on her cushion while looking at the river. We loved that there is a gate at the steps so we didn’t have to worry about her leaving the porch without us. We ate breakfast in the sunshine on the back part of the porch everyday. Our son came up for two days and was so impressed with everything. He kept thanking us for inviting him! We fished every morning and they fished at night with a fire in the fire pit. We also used the fire pit for an old fashioned hotdog roast and made s’mores. We used the provided charcoal grill to cook steaks, chicken and a pork tenderloin but the hotdog roast was my favorite! You won’t believe how well the owners stock the kitchen and bathrooms! When we go back we can take a lot less stuff! The house was very clean and both beds were really comfortable. The water was so good! Just a nice clean taste with no odor! They left a binder on the table with lots of good information about the area and menus. They really do think of everything to make your stay a relaxing one. Not once did we think, “I wish they had…”. It was absolutely perfect. PERFECT! You will pass other houses to get to this one but this house has a huge amount of river frontage with flat grassy areas to set up your stuff. Both Charlie and Jill are so responsive and friendly. You will not regret your decision to stay here.

" New " Favorite!!

Our family decided to go on a New River adventure this summer in place of a beach trip. We all agree that was a hood decision and especially after staying at the most accommodating location. With great host's helping us along the way!! The house provided a great location next to the river , with an amazing view, and the most peaceful porch! With ages 9 to 70 everyone had their on favorite part of this trip! So much to do and explore. The tubing and playing in the river was great too! Thanks for a great family memory!! This cabin is a perfect place for a quiet getaway. Right on the river and very private. True to the listing, this property has everything needed whether there for a week or just a long weekend. Very clean and comfortable. Beautiful views of the river from the covered porch! Charlie and Jill are so nice and always there to help should anything come up.
