About this property

Peaceful Mountain Retreat: Private Creek, Fireflies & Family Fun

Wake up to birdsong, sip coffee on the covered porch while listening to the creek, and watch deer wander through the woods. Holler Hall is a peaceful mountain retreat on 10 private wooded acres just minutes from downtown Sparta, North Carolina.

This is the kind of place where kids spend the day exploring, evenings end around the fire pit, and nights are quiet enough to hear the creek from the porch.

If your ideal vacation is slowing down, reconnecting with family, and enjoying nature instead of crowds, you’ll feel right at home here.

Why Guests Love Holler Hall

• 10 private wooded acres to explore
• Private mountain creek with picnic shelter
• Covered porch overlooking the creek
• Fire pit, tree swings, and outdoor seating
• Family-friendly layout with separate upstairs and downstairs living spaces
• Game room with shuffleboard, puzzles, and movies
• Fully equipped kitchen for family meals
• Minutes from downtown Sparta while feeling completely secluded

Guests often tell us they come for the mountains but remember the quiet.

You’ll likely see deer grazing in the yard, hummingbirds around the porch, fireflies lighting up summer evenings, and the occasional great blue heron along the creek.

A Mountain Home, Not a Resort

Holler Hall is an older mountain home surrounded by nature—not a luxury resort.

If you appreciate peaceful surroundings, wildlife, fresh mountain air, and the character of a well-loved family retreat, you’ll likely love your stay.

If you’re looking for a brand-new luxury cabin with hotel-style amenities, another property may be a better fit.

Upstairs – Where Mornings Begin Slowly

The upstairs is the heart of the home.

Enjoy coffee on the covered porch, cook breakfast in the fully stocked kitchen, and gather around the dining table after a day of exploring.

Upstairs includes:

• King bedroom with woodland views
• Queen bedroom
• Full bathroom with walk-in shower
• Fully stocked kitchen
• Dining table for eight
• Comfortable living area
• Covered porch overlooking the creek

Many guests tell us the porch becomes their favorite room in the house.

Whether it’s coffee at sunrise, reading in the afternoon, or listening to the creek after dark, it’s where memories are made.

Downstairs – A Space Just for Fun

The lower level gives everyone room to spread out.

Parents can relax upstairs while kids enjoy their own space—or everyone can gather for movies, games, and puzzles.

Downstairs includes:

• Family room with large sectional and Smart TV
• Shuffleboard court
• Game and puzzle table
• Kids’ bunk room with four twin beds
• Laundry room
• Covered patio leading to the yard

Guests frequently comment that the layout works especially well for families.

Explore Your Own Private Mountain Property

One of Holler Hall’s most unique features is the land itself.

The Creek

A gentle mountain creek flows through the property approximately 150 feet from the house and is visible from the covered porch.

Spend the afternoon skipping rocks, wading, reading beside the water, or simply listening to the sounds of the creek.

Many guests tell us the creek is even closer to the house than they expected from the photos.

Creekside Picnic Shelter

Enjoy breakfast by the water, an afternoon picnic, evening conversation, or simply a quiet place to read while the kids explore.

Tree Swings

Several tree swings provide hours of entertainment for younger guests.

Private Mountain Trail

A private trail climbs the mountain behind the house to a quiet overlook featuring a picnic table, glider bench, and beautiful mountain views.

Perfect for:

• Morning coffee
• Bird watching
• Journaling
• Family adventures
• Evening walks

Wildlife & Nature

Nature is one of Holler Hall’s greatest attractions.

Depending on the season you may see:

• Deer
• Wild turkeys
• Hummingbirds
• Goldfinches
• Great blue herons
• Fireflies
• Beautiful fall foliage

The sounds of birds, the creek, and the breeze through the trees often replace the noise of everyday life.

Explore the Area

Although Holler Hall feels wonderfully secluded, you’re only minutes from:

• Downtown Sparta
• The New River for tubing, kayaking, and fishing
• The Blue Ridge Parkway
• Stone Mountain State Park
• Grayson Highlands State Park (home of the wild ponies)
• Scenic drives, festivals, wineries, and local farms

It’s the perfect basecamp for exploring the High Country.

Mountain Home Comfort

Holler Hall is an older mountain home in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Like many homes in the area, it uses a mini-split heating and cooling system rather than central HVAC.

For the best comfort during warmer weather, we recommend keeping exterior doors and windows closed while the system is running. We’ve recently serviced the cooling system and added cellular shades to the sunniest windows to help keep the home comfortable throughout the summer.

During the small number of days each year with unusually extreme mountain weather, indoor temperatures may vary more than they would in a newer home with central HVAC.

Welcome to Holler Hall

More than just a place to stay, Holler Hall is a place to slow down.

If that’s your kind of vacation, we think you’ll love it

My family and I came in all the way from Laramie, Wyoming. We have a lot of family within a couple hours in a variety of directions from this place so it was the perfect center for our itinerary. The spot is beautiful and my one regret is not getting to spend more time sitting out on the porch, watching the fireflies and drinking coffee. Kids had a blast exploring. My wife and I had a chance to relax, take in the country air, and just decompress. Lots around the house for all of us to do, the house is really clean, and the property is just amazing to walk around and explore. There was almost always atleast one deer in the yard and usually a full family. Facilities were great. We slept like babies just all around an incredible trip. Definitely will be returning to Holler Hall!

The house was amazing, as well as the property and creek! We all had a wonderful time looking at the decor and all the extra touches the host provided was wonderful! Kids had a great time downstairs in gameroom. Such a relaxing place by the creek or just sitting on the back porch. We hope to be back soon! Thank you Drew and Lacey! Dana

Beautiful Mountain Home

All the amenities, yet with a country charm. So colorful and comfortable. Sitting on the back porch with the mountain breeze made it hard to leave and explore everything Sparta had to offer. Nice shops, great dining options, and the scenery just riding along the mountain roads. A great time!

The house is clean and spacious. Unfortunately we did not realize they do not have ac before booking and we stayed in July. The owner stated that most rentals in NC do not have ac but we visit a different cabin in NC every year. I’ve stayed in over 30 and never had to be without ac. Our cabin was at 79 degrees our entire visit. There was a window unit in the master that allowed that room to stay cold. However, the kids bunk room downstairs was very hot even at night and the owner did ship us fans to try and help. My mom in her 60s was supposed to come on this trip and we absolutely would of had to get a hotel if she did. It was miserable to be inside the house. When we go to the mountains every summer, we like to stay at the cabin, cook and play in the creek. Our creek was almost completely dried up due to lack of rain. It’s also far from the house so there’s no sending your kids to play while you cook. You can’t see them from the house. The upstairs bathroom doesn’t lock and the upstairs shower head is very low. We had to duck under it. The kitchen also needs a restock. The stove broke the same night we arrived and while that’s ok, it had to happen to someone. But we booked for 8 days and the owner did not have it repaired while we were there. I even told him we bought a ton of groceries day 1 and enjoy cooking. He tried to make up for the stove by sending us cash to get boba and waiving our pet fee but the house being hot all day made for a miserable vacation.

Response from VrboOwner on 25 July 2026
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re truly sorry your stay coincided with both a record-breaking July heat wave and an unexpected stove failure. When the stove stopped working, we immediately began looking for a solution. Unfortunately, because it was Fourth of July weekend in a rural mountain community, we were unable to have it repaired during your stay. To help, we overnighted two hot plates, and the kitchen also included an Instant Pot, toaster oven, and microwave so you could continue preparing meals. Since your visit, the stove has been replaced, and we’ve also upgraded the home’s cooling, so the house is now comfortably air conditioned. For future guests, we’d also like to clarify that the property features a small, natural mountain creek located on the property that is visible from the porch. Like all mountain creeks, its flow varies with seasonal rainfall, and it offers a peaceful place to explore and enjoy nature. We appreciate your feedback and have continued making improvements to the home. Our goal is always to provide a comfortable, memorable mountain getaway, and we wish you all the best.

Rest and relaxation!

We had a great time at Holler Hall and Drew & Lacey were excellent hosts. The kitchen was well stocked with whatever utensils you might need and the lounge area downstairs was excellent for spending quality family time. We traveled to the area to go tubing on the New River and Holler Hall was the perfect place for our family to stay and unwind. We saw deer, a heron, hummingbirds, turkeys, and met the friendly neighborhood dog Sam. We'll definitely check if Holler Hall is available next time we're in the area.

The property is in a very private location near sparta. It was a nice stay. Our only constructive feedback is the AC system did not cool the house. After talking with the owner it cooled a bit but still needs review. As a note we stayed during summer months. Thanks!

About the host

Hosted by drew grim

Host profile image
Hi, we’re Drew and Lacey — a farm-based family in North Carolina who loves good food, quiet mornings, and welcoming people to the mountains. We run a small family farm and a historic schoolhouse property in the Piedmont, and Holler Hall is our peaceful getaway spot that we feel grateful to share with others.

We love hosting because we know how special it is to step away from the noise of everyday life and settle into a place where the creek is the loudest thing you hear. When we’re not hosting, you’ll usually find us caring for our animals, hiking with our kids, teaching homesteading and pasture workshops, or cooking big meals with local ingredients.

Our hope is that your time at Holler Hall gives you the same sense of rest, fresh air, and togetherness that it gives our family. We’re nearby if you need anything, always happy to help, and we love seeing guests return year after year.

We’re honored to host you and hope you enjoy the mountains as much as we do.

Why they chose this property

We chose this spot because it feels like its own little world — peaceful, private, and tucked along a beautiful creek — yet close enough to Sparta that you can enjoy the restaurants, shops, and local charm whenever you want. It’s the best of both worlds: a quiet mountain retreat that doesn’t leave you feeling isolated.

This hollow has a special kind of calm to it. The sound of the creek carries through the trees, deer wander the edges of the yard, and the stars are bright at night. Mornings here feel slow and gentle. Evenings feel like they’re made for porch sitting, listening to the water, and watching the sky turn pink over the ridge.

We love that this neighborhood gives families and couples a chance to truly unwind without giving up convenience. You’re minutes from downtown Sparta, the New River, hiking trails, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and beautiful scenic drives. There’s so much to explore — from lavender farms and fiddlers conventions to local coffee shops, great dining, and mountain festivals — but you always get to come home to peace, privacy, and the steady sound of the creek.

What we enjoy most is the simplicity of this place. Kids can play in the yard and explore the nature trail while adults relax on the porch or sit by the water. Neighbors are friendly but respectful of privacy. And every season brings something new — fireflies in summer, changing leaves in fall, quiet snowy mornings, and crisp mountain air year-round.

We chose this neighborhood because it feels like the kind of place where people can breathe, reconnect, and slow down. And we’ve loved being able to share that feeling with the guests who come to stay at Holler Hall.

What makes this property unique

Holler Hall stands out because it offers an experience that’s hard to find in the North Carolina mountains: a peaceful cabin with true privacy, direct creek access, kid-friendly features, and your own private nature trail, all on the same property.

Most cabins are tucked close to neighbors, perched above steep drops, or require a long, winding drive. Holler Hall is different. The home sits gently beside a wide, open yard where kids can safely run and play, just steps from the creek. You can sit on the porch and still hear the water flowing — not far off in the distance, but right there on your property. It’s close enough for children to explore while adults relax nearby, something guests consistently tell us they love.

Another feature you won’t find at most rentals is the mountain-top trail that belongs entirely to the property. It winds from the yard up through the woods to a quiet ridge with long-range views, a picnic table, and a glider. Guests tell us this becomes a favorite ritual — coffee up top, a sunset walk, or a quiet moment to unwind away from everything.

Inside, the cabin offers a layout that works beautifully for both families and couples. The upstairs living area is bright and open, while the downstairs lounge gives kids and adults separate spaces when they want them. The painted shuffleboard court on the lower level is a rare and memorable touch — simple, fun, and part of the charm that makes the house feel lived-in and welcoming.

What truly makes Holler Hall unique, though, is the atmosphere. The combination of the creek, the privacy, the wildlife, the thoughtful touches, and the overall sense of calm creates a stay that feels deeper than “just a place to sleep.” Many guests describe it as restful, grounding, or even healing.

This isn’t a themed rental or a generic mountain cabin. It’s a place with personality and heart — a property that invites you to slow down, explore, breathe, and make memories you’ll carry with you long after you leave.
