About this property

2 bedroom, 2 bathroom Townhome - Center of Historic Santa Fe, Car Unnecessary

Permit #: 157077

Palace of the Sleeping Dog-Dos is a newly renovated townhome situated in a single building comprising 3 distinct units, each with a separate entrance. Located at the corner of East Palace Avenue and Paseo de Peralta, this lovely townhome is just a 5 minute walk (0.3 miles) to the Plaza in the center of historic Santa Fe. A car is unnecessary.

This historic property, renovated in 2019 to a very high standard ensuring quiet accommodation , has an open spacious feeling with abundant natural light.

The home opens to the light filled open-concept living/dining/kitchen with hardwood floors throughout. The living room is designed for comfortable entertaining or relaxing, and the dining room features a wood burning kiva fireplace. The immaculate kitchen is tastefully appointed with high-end finishes and top-of-the-line appliances. The master suite features a King bed. This bed may also be separated into two twin beds upon special request. The guest bedroom has a Queen bed. The two bathrooms, each with a walk-in shower, exhibit the same level of tasteful finishes found throughout the house.

There is a shared laundry facility (for the 3 townhomes) on premises with with a full size washer and dryer available upon request. The access is generally intended for guests staying one week or more.

Welcome to the Palace of the Sleeping Dog: What’s that name all about? We chose it because:
A. It relates to a Santa Fe legend,
B. We love dogs,
C. No one has a greater talent for relaxing and sleeping than a dog!,
D. Our lovely building is on Palace Avenue and who doesn’t want to highlight an address like that, and
E. If your dog would like to join you on your trip, Welcome!

Now regarding that Santa Fe legend: The famous Santa Fe based novelist Richard Bradford related that when describing to visitors how to get to his house (which, by the way, was very close to where you are now, just up Canyon Road), in the absence of street signs (this was in the 1950’s) he would tell them to “Turn left at the sleeping dog.” There was a large shaggy dog who spent most of every day napping in a shady patch on Camino Del Monte Sol, so reliably that he served as a landmark.

But the point of Bradford’s story goes beyond the literal. In Santa Fe, we understand the value of going slow, of marching to the beat of our own drum, of going along with change but not too fast and not too completely, and yes, of knowing how to enjoy a fine spot of shade on a summer day.

And should you feel so inclined, you might engage in a few other canine meditations, under the gaze of the meditating dog you will find in your apartment. Is there some situation in your current life, for instance, where you might be better advised to let sleeping dogs lie?
Do you sometimes venture into places or situations unwise for anyone but mad dogs and Englishmen?
Do you pursue things doggedly? Are you currently dogged by any worries that you perhaps could let go of?
Rest, relax, take a stroll to the Plaza (5 minutes), sit on the porch with a cup of coffee or drink. Or for more ideas on how to enjoy Santa Fe, see the guest manual.

Tommy Macaione Park is a short block away for enjoying the outdoors or walking your dog (please pick up after though). Tommy is a famous local Santa Fe artist that used to paint wonderful landscapes from the park venue.

Wonderful stay at the Palace of the Sleeping Dog Dos

This an outstanding property - great location near the Santa Fe Plaza, very comfortable, well equipped, and great communication with the owner. We stayed here to attend our nephew's wedding at La Posada across the street and also the cocktail party/reception at The Drury, also across the street. It was all excellent!!

Great digs for the girls weekend

Lovely, well maintained property within easy walkable distance to all downtown Santa Fe restaurants, galleries and shopping. My girlfriends and I had a wonderful weekend in Santa Fe and the Palace of the Sleeping Dog was a great place to retire to after full days of walking, art, and food. Will definitely stay here again.

Christmas Vacation

The property is in a great location for access to the square and Canyon Road. Clean and nice bathrooms and small kitchen. The only downside is the beds and the traffic noise if you are staying in the front bedroom.

Comfortable in a great location

This was a very nicely done rental with a good kitchen set up. Quality above usual rentals. Comfortable beds and linens. Super clean when we arrived. The close in location makes it great for exploring the history and art of downtown. It is on a little bit busier street but knew that having been to Santa Fe before.

Location, location, location!

If you want to spend your time roaming the streets of downtown, the Railyard Arts District and Canton Road then this place is definitely for you! Park your car and never move it. This property is just a couple of blocks from the Governor’s Palace, Georgia O’Keeffe Art Gallery and so much more. Very nice, clean, comfortable property and exactly as described. Will definitely stay here in our next trip!

Lovely

We had a lovely stay at Palace of the Sleeping Dog and would definitely stay there again for proximity and simplicity. Safe neighborhood within walking distance to the plaza. We also brought our Aussie doodle and the pet fee was only $100, which is less than most. There was a small park very close by to take him to easily. Highly recommend.

saggy mattresses

overall the property was clean, spacious and close to downtown Santa Fe. However, both bedrooms had sagging mattresses toward the middle which attributed to restless sleep for both couples. We left maps behind for the next guests as there were none when we arrived.

Great location and clean home

Pros: Cute! Super walkable to everywhere on the Plaza. Great to have our own parking spot!! Very clean home; we were comfy and happy. Drawbacks: It is LOUD. Lots of roadnoise, even in the back bedroom. I suggest a sound machine (provided by the house would be ideal), which would likely alleviate this problem in the bedrooms. Also, maybe just our experience, but we had the middle of the 3 units so we were ‘sandwiched in’. I imagine this is good and bad as we had less noise. But, it was HOT for us. It was 77 when we arrived inside even though the air was set to 67. We left windows/doors open to cool it while we were home, but without screens, we didn’t feel comfortable leaving them open otherwise. It’s like the thick Adobe walls held the heat 🤷🏼‍♀️ Also, pay attention to Richard’s initial email when booking. We booked far in advance so I disregarded it. Well, this is where your info is to enter the home. My error, but I couldn’t reach Richard during check in and it delayed us an hour in getting in (never did I imagine the door code would be in an email from a month ago: I was waiting for it to update on vrbo) Overall, we would stay here again. We would just bring a sound machine. And, we hope to stay and book the surround 2 units for our fam to have the whole ‘compound’ to ourselves!

Easy place to stay

It’s close to everything, has parking and is well stocked. Once you’re inside there is very little street noise. Just FYI If you have a dog or toddler, the door handles are lever so it can be easily opened so you might want to put a chair in front of it. It has a washer and dryer but I didn’t use.

This is a FANTASTIC place to stay in Santa Fe!

The location cannot be beat, with a private and safe parking place and one block off the plaza. This property was clean, had some neat elements like a kiva fireplace and beams, and had comfortable beds. It was just a wonderful place for our family to stay. The host was responsive and kind and we would absolutely stay here again!

Perfect location!

We stayed for 3 nights for a mother/daughter trip, and we were thrilled by the close location and spaciousness of the triplex. My mom has some mobility issues due to a recent fall, so it was nice for her to have a room that had an en-suite, and wide-flat walkways. A huge bonus is that the location was quite literally a 4 minute walk down just one road to get into the center of town! So convenient and it felt very safe. I agree with some other reviewers that the front room gets some street noise, and the wall unit heater is a tad loud, but earplugs did the trick. The beds were very comfortable and the unit was spotless! I love that they provided a yoga mat and a few free weights too. Such a great surprise. The only recommendation for the owner would be to add an inexpensive non-slip rug mat under the 2 bedroom rugs. They were very slick and we had a few close calls. Other than that minor minor thing, our stay was so wonderful and the host couldn’t have been more accommodating. VERY responsive and very helpful which makes such a difference when traveling. 10/10 recommend!

Santa Fe Expedition

Very successful stay. Pros: - Superb location two blocks from the Plaza and from the start of Canyon Road - Very clean and well provided with a good coffee maker, great tv with multiple channels; all sorts of kitchen supplies, etc. - Very responsive manager to deal with a lamp not working Cons - - It is steps from a road intersection with a traffic light. “Normal” traffic noise not a problem. However, sometimes loud diesel pickups or local “hot rods” with glass pack mufflers go by and are intrusive. - Bedroom ac are a bit loud.

Family Getaway

The entire family was extremely happy with our stay. The location could not have been better. It was a short walk to the plaza and restaurants. We loved that we had a designated parking space as parking downtown can be difficult. I was extremely impressed with how clean the suite was. Overall it was a wonderful stay.
