About this property

Welcoming you to the Gila Wilderness!

Sapillo Creek Escape is a one of a kind gem in the Gila Wilderness. Come experience our beautiful home in the Gila National Forest for a relaxing and rejuvenating vacation. Adjacent to Lake Roberts and minutes from the Continental Divide, our custom-built, southwest style home features comfort and luxury with incredible mountain views, 20 acres for hiking and enjoying the outdoors, plus the Gila right outside the door. Proximity to Silver City, NM means the best of both worlds – nature and serenity plus restaurants, galleries, shops and loads of local events.

Our home boasts 4 kiva fireplaces, Santa Fe style design with saltillo tile and custom touches throughout. Strategically placed windows and decks capture the beauty of the surrounding scenery. Sapillo Creek Escape borders the Gila National Forest on several sides, and additionally, the pristine Sapillo Creek runs through the property. If you’re a fisherman, bring your reel and fish right on the property, or take a quick drive to Lake Roberts for fishing, canoeing and kayaking.

Take a hike in the Gila or around Lake Roberts, visit the Gila Cliff Dwellings or Hot Springs, or take a scenic drive into Silver City for dining, shopping, museums, and a multitude of galleries and events. Kick back and relax on one of our many decks and porches, enjoy the view and the peaceful sound of the wind in the pine trees. Take a nighttime walk on our property to view the stars – the Gila National Forest enjoys some of the darkest skies in the continental U.S.

Over 3,000 square feet in the home at your disposal, this place is made for just you or you and your family and friends to enjoy the Gila Wilderness.

This is one of a kind space hosting four full bedrooms with adjoining decks that show off majestic views at 6,000 feet elevation. There are three full bathrooms and 4 kiva fireplaces!

You have access to it all!

The entire house was built by hand and it took nearly 7 years to complete. Everything is custom and I can promise you that you will never stay in a place like this!

A great location to retreat to and escape from the everyday! We want you to share this jewel with your family, friends, biking crew, birding group, hiking tribe, fishing buds, and your hunting pals to enjoy Sapillo Creek Escape!

We will entertain pets so long as they get along with other pets and have their recent vaccinations. If you are bringing a cat/cats or a dog/dogs, we have had issues with pets soiling the carpet and scratching up the doors. Please crate or keep pets in their carriers when you are not in the house or take your pets with you. We avail the use of a dog crate in the common area for dog(s) and for cats, please bring your own cat carrier. Also, please keep them off of the furniture to make it easier to clean and to be mindful of future guests who may be allergic. Finally, please pick up after them and throw the poop bags into a larger trash bag since we have to take the trash out to the dump and keeping track of all the individual poop bags is disgusting and annoying.

Finally, you’re on 20 acres of our land, so camping is also welcome!

We are available via cell, text and email.

Only cell service out here is T-Mobile.

We will have internet access but there are no TVs in the home. We want you to disconnect while you are here and enjoy the environment around you!

Beautiful Setting
This get-away place in the Gila mountains is truly beautiful. The surrounding hills and mountains are partially tree covered and grand. The setting is perfect for the house. We had our dog with us, and the walled and fenced in yard was perfect. The house is a wonder and unique beyond anywhere else we have stayed. It is well represented by the pictures and description given by the owners. Two things to note: 1) There are three other houses/cottages on the property, though we still found plenty of privacy during our stay. 2) If you have a larger group staying at the house, it is worth noting that there is no indoor gathering room large enough to gather. The living room is small and in an L shape. This was not a problem for us. For us, over-all, this is a 5 star place to rent and stay at with reasonable rates.

Amazing Views
We loved the place. The bedrooms were set up with separate balconies and the views were fantastic. We really enjoyed the stay and the house was beautiful and set up with everything you may think you need.

Beautiful private home
We read with amusement that some reviewer wrote this property was "obviously staged." Well, yes, IF two dozen Navajo-style weavings along with 80+ Native American decorative pots all tastefully placed on the floors, walls, shelves and tables throughout the first floor alone - if THAT is staging - AND IF numerous cowboy and Indian artifacts and large green plants, as well as antiquish bureaus, mirrors, Southwest style chairs and tables if ALL THAT is also staging....then we hope to find EVERY Vrbo place we visit similarly "staged." But we found the home - the hacienda really - thoroughly welcoming, fully and thoughtfully furnished, well-supplied to meet all needs....completely un-staged by our judgment. The setting IS very private and far away from reliable cell service and food, gas stores - but if it's privacy and beauty and warmth that you cherish - and NO TV - then this might be your perfect place. It's gorgeous, and can easily accommodate a reunion of several couples, or a bunch of adults seeking reconnection (kids would need to be very outdoor-oriented, though there are lots of games inside). We loved our wood-burning fireplace, loved local hikes (like #74 south), loved the cliff dwellings, loved the hacienda atmosphere.

This home is a real find
This is an absolutely lovely home in an absolutely beautiful location. We feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to stay in this home. The family who built it clearly did so with a lot of love. We’ve given 5 star ratings before and feel that this home really deserves to be on a different scale altogether. It is stunning.

The perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of life
We just spent six days at this beautiful, unique home that sits inside the Gila National Forest. The home is spacious, well appointed and is located on a fairly secluded piece of land. Because the nearest gas/groceries/restaurants are nearly an hour away, we cooked most of our meals and the kitchen had everything we needed to do so. The beds were comfortable and we loved that there were so many seating areas and balconies throughout the house to enjoy our morning coffee and afternoon wine. There's no light noise so one of our favorite activities at night was sitting on the balconies, watching the stars. (We were fortunate to be at the house during a meteor shower - WOW!) We came to hike and explore and there are several nice trails close by - we did Purgatory Chasm and the Lake Roberts North Trail - as well as a hike through the chasm next to the house. We also visited the Gila Cliff Dwellings (very cool) and Esperanza Winery - highly recommend. One thing to note: this house is fairly remote; it takes a long time to get around in the Gila forest because of the switchbacks. A trail or sight that's 30 miles away might take an hour or more to reach. We loved that it was remote but we also didn't get to do everything we wanted to do because we didn't realize how long it would take to reach some of the trails, like the catwalk. Still, we look forward to going back.

We are Tommy and Jen and we love the outdoors and sharing wonderfully unique locations for guests to share. We have an extremely large Brady Bunch type family and we are often traveling and making the most of the environment around us.

Why they chose this property

Sapillo Creek Escape is a unique, custom-built property by craftsman, John Claussen. He was the former builder, owner of Bear Creek Cabins in Pinos Altos, NM. He put his heart and soul into this home and you can tell. We were blessed to take over ownership of this unique property, situated in the heart of the Gila National Forest and the Mogollon Mountains after he passed away.
