About this property

Vintage island cottage on 2.5 acres and 376 feet of lake frontage!

Family cottage for the last 50+ years. Large deck and large open concept kitchen. Rare large deck at the water’s edge with lots of seating. Great location in protected cove with deep 40 foot dock. It is a 10 min boat ride to Wolfeboro. See the lights from Wolfeboro at night. Great walking path in the center of the island approx 1.5 miles long. House sits on 2.5 acres with a total of 376 feet of lake frontage between two lots, very private. Three season porch has two pullout couches a favorite sleeping spot with knotty pine walls. Close to loon sanctuary. Since it is an island home - you must have your own boat or rent to get to and from the island. There are no motorized vehicles on the island (about 60 houses) - very tranquil and quiet. Prefer to rent > 1 week at a time but feel free to send me a message we can work something out depending on the dates. High speed internet, Direct TV, with a desk space as well you can work from home here. This is a cottage my family uses as well so you will find everything well stocked - not the typically barren vacation rental with cheap furniture and minimal silverware.

Perfect Location!

If you love lake life and are excited by the opportunity for living on a lush wooded island, this the rental for you! PERFECLY located straight across the from quaint Wolfeboror made fun trips into town very easy. The property is tucked nicely into a very calm cove that made it great for afternoon lounging and swimming. The house was exactly as advertised with close-up views of the lake. Our favorite part was the lakeside deck!!! The lake is beautiful with breath taking views and amazingly homes around every corner and on every island no matter how tiny. Important heads-up and tip: The lake does have MANY unexpected rock shoals that are not as well maked as many people may be accustomed. I strongly recomend using a navigation app at all times. I found Navionix to be very accurate. I ran with it on the dash at all times. There are many local hikes available. We did the waterfall hike at Castle in the Clouds which I highly recommend. Our host Mike couldn't have been more accommodating and helpful! We would definitely stay again!

Vintage vacation home

Loved the long deck along the water and the great view of the lake from most rooms. Vintage home which added to the charm of it. The canoe allowed us to see some pretty cool small islands nearby that would be too shallow to visit by boat. Large property gave us plenty of privacy. Would go again!

Great week

this property is ideally located, with evening views of the lights of wolfborough but some protected areas for watersports. It is a camp house, with dated appliances that actually are a part of the charm. Everything worked well, the dock is long enough for a larger boat. Michael is the ideal host. Thank you!

We loved it! Location, Location, Location!!!

We had such a wonderful stay at Michael's cottage. We brought our 21 ft. boat up from Rhode Island and it was easy to launch at the Wolfboro public boat ramp. Public trailer parking was just across the street. The ride over to the Cottage was a short 6 minute trip. Docking at the cottage was easy and we never worried about the boat on the dock. Michael's Cottage is very peaceful and comfortable. It has a rustic charm that takes you back to another time- no cars on the Island. Gorgeous views and a great spot for swimming. The large deck over the water is where we spent most of our time. It is perfect for relaxing. Swim, Eat, Sleep, repeat. The kitchen has everything you need for family meals and there is a convenient grocery store in Wolfboro, walking distance from the boat ramp (Also, we recommend a Hot Dog from the guy at the stand and checking out the Meat Market for the best meatballs!). The Wolfboro lights are magical at night and can be seen from the large picturesque window in the living room. Lots of rooms to spread out for large families. This Barndoor Island cottage is a treat and we can't wait to book our next stay.

About the host

Hosted by Michael Smith

Host profile image
My great aunt- and uncle built on the property when Barndoor Island was first developed by Robert Ronci in the late 1960s. At that time the only structures were a cow barn and a caretaker's cottage. They both grew up during the Great Depression and you will see photos of them hanging in the house as the cottage was their dream. I lived there myself for 13 summers with my great-aunt after my great-uncle passed away. I had a vegetable garden behind the house - the only one on the island.

Why they chose this property

You will be hard pressed to find a place with this much privacy on the big lake - in addition to the protected cove. You will be able to find newer houses, more updated houses, bigger houses, but you won't get the same privacy and space for the price. I have several families that come back year after year and limited VRBO openings.

What makes this property unique

2.5 acres, 330 feet of lake frontage.
